Last year was a good one at work as we got a new type of flying into our repertoire!

We got hired by the Aviationphotocrew to fly photoship for their Air2Air photography projects. Great fun and great challenge making a very nice break from doing the same stuff year in year out (not that that is boring )

Anyway there is a very nice photoreport her:

And some video here
Beautiful (2 min 51 sec)

Well Iím not only older but also got back Into actually building RC planes. There was a long time where I flew a lot of helicopter 3D but didnít build any planes or even boats (which I also did for a while) but I was always missing it without having the drive to actually do anything about it.

Fast forward to last fall and I finally managed to complete a build that I started 10(!) years earlier and Iím hooked again.

So if your coming into this blog for some reason then thatís how it is right now and Iíve probably several build logs in progress and itís best to search for them to get to see some more interesting stuff

one of my recently repaired T-REXes bought the dust yet again this evening.

I was having a ball, but the tracking was a bit off causing some vibrations i dismissed for later....

well untill the RX Crystal fell out !!

nosed in from about 50ft up in idle up. The impact was pretty hard but the damage was in fact pretty moderate compared to the last one

The moral of the story... if somethings wrong FIX it !

Safety your crystals

Today did my first indoor Flips with the PZ
Went well albeit there seems to be a problem with too much pitch i loose cyclic travel (hence the abortet forward flips).

All in all great fun, need to ballance a bit better therfore the tail wagging.

See Video here

t-REX CARNAGE !!! took only 3 minutes of flying to produce... will take a couple of hours and a couple of $ to fix....

Well after a great weekend flying and not breaking anything i went thru an extensive maintenance Session:

Raptor 30:
Dropped Engine, to remove up-down play in startshaft / startshaft coupler
Added shim above main gear to remove up down play in main gear. Checked all linkages and screws, did a complete re-servoing to HS-635s

T-Rex 1:
Did a complete checkup of all the head parts and found a LOT of loose stuff... went liberaly over the whole stuff with locktite.. Completely redid pitch setup, now pos and neg pitch symetric ! Swapped Canopy from T-Rex 2 on because the old one from T-Rex 1 was pretty dinged up...

T-Rex 2:
adjusted swash travel to prevent binding at max deflection, adjusted tail travel so i get max travel now, built new Canopy

MM Cessna 180:
complete re-shrinking of all covered surfaces. Got the twist out of elevator, vertical stab, washout corrected on both wingtips. After a flight the motor died and i had to make surgery to install a new motor, re-covered that area too.

MS-Composit CH46:
Took the Fuse off, removed PG-03 on Nick and installed MS-44 Heading Hold gyro. That took a bit of fiddeling to get adjusted right,y but response is great then did a complete reballance of front and aft rotors found 2 blade holder screws bent in aft rotor head causing massive vibes.

Pico Zoom:
Put new double bearing tail pitch slider on

It`s been the first really nice day in months AND i even had the day off
Maidened my Number 2 T-Rex yesterday. The Heli is a stock CDE, with 430LF and Align 35A ESC. Flies VERY VERY nice, completely neutral trims super fun to fly
Today put 4 packs thru it with my novice stickbanging 3D flying style down at the end of the runway with our local slowflyer community. To bleed off the adrenaline i took the Depron Ulitmate for a spin, and in the evening i fired up the Rappy 30.
I had almost forgotten how nice the Rappy flies now with all metall head, BBT Carbons, green Paddles and a perfect running OS37 i`m tossing it around just like the Rex !

It's awesome! normal cruising around doing patterns with fullstop and taxiying back to takeoff i was flying for 22mins and put 430mAh back into my 2 cell 800mAh pack !

i might try it with my old 350mAh 3 cell packs.. gotta be just right for the floats

btw. the flying was done in freezing fog, i stopped ater 12mins to warm up my hands and discovered the leading edges of the wing and elevator had accumulated ice

Now finally she has a name!

OE-DKC, well the real one was a Cessna 185 and the Kit is a 180... but what the heck

This plane is rapidly getting my favorit dawn plane, or perfect for the walk across teh airfield to the restaurant to do a couple of touch and goes on the apron while on lunch break !

i really need to complete the skis now

I put some more colour on the Cessna... still needs the Registration and more detailing done.

Today was the day... hardly any wind... well so i thought about 5-8kts first flight was infront of our hangar. The Plane is pretty hard to taxi around... kind of like the real one with my free castoring tail wheel. i'm sure with no wind it's no problem thou

So acceleration with the big 3 blade prop is very nice and climb power pretty good even on the 2cell 800mAh pack. Me thinks power will be alright even for ROW with the floats.

1st Flight
Took off and started a stall mush pilot induced oscillation and had a bit of a hard landing only after 60ft DUH fly faster

2nd Flight
Flatter climb out, the a/c flies straight like an arrow control authority is good. Coming back over for a relatively slow pass with the wind it started to mush again and dissapeared behind our Skyvan parked on the end of the hangar apron... DUH, went in from about 15ft up and surprise hardly any damage tuff little critter !

3d Flight
Went out to the field so i didn't have to worry about hitting parked airplanes.. Did 2 patterns and then stopped sue to too much wind really.

Need to increase wing washout, else perfect great looking little bird, looking forward to flying it in no wind!

Skies next

FInally got my act together and covered the fuse and wing. My first covering job now finished i'm pretty happy with the results... i mean they are far from perfect and i learned a great deal on how to make it better if i ever build one again (not the MM Models.. they are geat, i'm talking about covered A/C per se... i like depron )

So far after about a week of slow night time building my C180 is fully built and ready for installation of the specials, like light kit and stuff.. covering next !

talking about how i didn' crash my T-REX was bad... of course i crashed it next flight!

But it was a dumb thumbs thing coming out of fast backwards flight to enter a a big funnel i lost it and WHACK !!!

Dunno if i'm going to rebuild this one or go for a new kit. I have pretty much everything i guess to get it back to fly, but it started to develop quite a bit of slop in the head and i think it might be time to retire this one for parts.
we'll see... DEFINITELY i want a Rex airborn as soon as practicable

Dang... something electrical again.

After a rebuild and setups session i thought i take it out for a real testflight with some acro. Headspeed in Gov mode was kind of lowish as to compared to last flight so i upped the throttle a bit. Was flying ok, tail holding well also in punch outs. Very floaty.

Started away in Fastforward flight and all of a sudden engine cuts... auto or lets say trying to auto. At the bottom engine comes alive again and causes lots of torque and a massive piro just prior touchdown ... snap goes the boom. dang.
I hope this thing isn't going Hornet 2 on me...

So far my Rex has 2 hours with 24 flights of 3D training on it since last crash... man am i happy with this thing !

Wellllllll... after a month of not flying any of my helis due to being on the road i've today completed maintenance on my Rappy. Put in a new Main Gear, put the OS37 back in with the tuned pipe after replacing the broken piston ring. AND i got a brand new Futaba GY401.

All setup for testing tomorrow. The Gyro is very promising as the Servo instantly stopped the constant yittering it made with the MS44.

Well we'll see how she behaves tomorrow
