The wing struts fell off my one UMX P3 while flying. Luckily, the wings stayed on. HH sent me a whole wing kit to replace them and while they were in the mail a friend convinced me to get my 3D printer working again with PETG. PETG is awesome. So I took a wing strut, a "Cow Lipper" (caliper) as my son like to call it, and got to work in Sketchup. I quickly had the exact shape of a strut. Then I decided to modify it. I like the result. I even like the white. I have a few more colors coming soon, so I am holding off on gluing them in. They fit so well that the top wing is barely holding them in place in the pics and the surfaces are all level. What does everyone else think?

I had the Timber out Saturday. I brought out the Apprentice 15e too to test the fog. Sure enough I kept losing the Apprentice in the fog, but since I had it on intermediate mode I just kept turning left until it came back into view. Finally it cleared up enough for me to take some video. I love a good 3D plane, but the Timber was relaxing to fly. Still working on the flap settings. Even slow she wanted to balloon.

The year started out with one good flight and one bad flight. I was due for a crash anyhow. Plus this is post #1000! It only took 4 years and 5 months!

I missed NEAT this year, but some of the guys from the club made it there and to the HK auction. Steve brought back this B-17.

I had a chance to see Joe Malinchak's relly tiny micro RC collection and one of the Corsair's in action over the weekend. It was probably one of the hardest planes to record. Surprisingly fast. Plus, I recorded some really funny warbird formation practice. It was a great weekend, just very sad that my LHS is gone.

This has been a long and great flying season, but every week the sun goes down a little faster. I love having dedicated flying time on Wednesdays.

My Yak 3X never made it into the air. During the ground test the motor pulled out of the fuse. That nose over last week must have been a lot harder than I though. But Bob brought up his new HK Reverb and I recorded some video of it in action.

After years of flying at parks and one free field that has been sold and is no longer available, I decided to join the LAMs and submitted my paperwork and dues last night. Right after doing that I started the flying. The NVA was flying amazing last night. I had the Rare Bear battery too far back and ended up pretty high. The guys behind me were yelling that I must have great eye sight . I was high enough to glide it down gently for a long time. I like to fly my racing planes like they are gliders and my gliders like racing planes. Go figure.

To really wow everyone (when the wind almost stopped dead), I pulled out the UMX PT-17 and started walking towards the flight line. Everyone chuckled and said the little UMX planes can be flown over the side field by the parking lot, which I promptly did.

I was the last flight of the night (NVA flying against a wall of dark clouds with massive heat lightning was cool) and the last one out of the parking lot. The guys are very friendly and I think that the cost of joining was totally worth it. It is nice to know that I have a quiet and beautiful field to go to whenever I feel like flying.

I let a friend fly it and I was able to take some better video of it. Definitely not for 3D.

I miss the old van. It had so much room. Now when we go camping we have to take two cars. Luckily, all the camping gear fits in one.

Local fireworks display from over the weekend. I used audio from another source that was recording the same thing at the festival, so you can hear the fireworks. I tried using audio software to remove the voices a little but then the fireworks...no longer sounded like fireworks.

So I am flying my profile foamy during my son's baseball game yesterday. Don't worry, I was not flying over the game. I like flying across the parking lot at the football field because all the little brothers and sisters come running over and get 15 to 20 minutes of watching planes fly. That also comes with the inevitable "Can I fly it?" which I used to find distracting. Yesterday was different. The kid had to be something like 4, I just took off, and conversation went something like this:

Kid: Can I fly your plane.
Me: No.
Kid: Why?
Me: Because this plane is not a beginner plane.
Kid: But I know how to fly?
Me: What do you fly?
Kid: I have a drone.
Me: Drones are easy to fly. This is different.
Kid: I can fly it.
Me: No, you can't.
Kid: Yes, I can.
....this went of for 2 minutes....
Me: No, you can't
Kid: Yes, I...
Kid's older sister: Enough!
Kid: Can I touch it?
Me: No.
Kid: Why not?
Me: Some parts might be too hot to touch after flying.
Kid: I'm going to touch it.
Me: I'll call the police.
Kid: I'll call the police!
Me: Cool, maybe two different cops will show up and we can have them fight. If yours wins, you can touch it.
DX9: 30 seconds remaining.
Kid: What was that?
Me: I have to land now.

And that was pretty much it. The kids stayed behind the flight line like I asked them to, I landed, and then went back to watch some of the game. I think I was entertained with the conversation as much as the flight, but I was doing all kinds of stunts during the conversation. I wasn't even really thinking about it. That only took 4 years.

Over 6 months since I posted to my blog? I have been flying the whole time. It's been a mild winter so I was out in the cold. I waited for months to fly my Icon A5s (big and small) and the Island Beaver in the snow. When it did snow, it was melted by the time I got out of work. I was able to get almost all my other planes out this winter, so it was fun. I have noticed that my flying has greatly improved recently. Flying inverted patterns and other stunt maneuvers are feeling pretty natural to me. My 3D is improving too. I think it is going to be a fun summer.

Now that is is spring, I went to a fun fly at the LHS. They have a great field there. That is where I took the pic. One thing that changed is I no longer have my van. I have a RAV 4 now, so I have to be picky about what I bring, but I thought those 3 (and a profile foamy I forgot I brought) fit really nice in it.

Sadly, the LHS owner has the store open by appointment only now and has the field and his house up for sale. I hear that he is looking to move south permanently. He was nice enough to let me do his website, marketing, and social media for him. I did it all for store credit. Without his support I would not have the RC collection I do today. He has a few events planned for the spring and early summer, so hopefully I will be able to get up there a few more times. I am really going to miss that field and store, but I did make a lot of new friends hanging out there and we still get together. We'll just keep flying on.

I did a lot of flying over the weekend and at the end I grabbed these two shots because it was just amazing.

So, some of you know me. Major RC addict and married to a wonderful woman who went from hating the hobby to politely asking fro the first floor of our house back every once in a while when we have guests. Well early this week she texted me asked if I could take Friday off to use my Yuneec Q500 to capture an event where she works. Jokingly I told her to take it and do it herself. That lead to a conversation followed by a trip to the local park. I did a set up and break down to show her what to do. Then she did a set up and did her first flight followed by a full break down and set up and flight. Friday she successfully flew two batteries and captures some great footage of the event safely. She even had a few people act as flight line security because I told her people will come too close not thinking about the danger. Sure enough they tried and her assistants kept them back. So my wife can fly a Q500 unassisted. I never thought I'd see the day.

Also last week, a guy at work who listens a group of us us talk about flying decided to try it without asking anyone's opinion on how to start. Sure enough, we heard it ended up in a tree. So I approached him and asked him the make and model. He had no clue. After trying to get more info from him for the better part of a day, he finnally gave up that he got it from Best Buy online and it cost $2800. Yep, be bought a DJI Inspire for his first drone and admitted to not reading the manual at all. I flew one once and know that you really need to read the manual and learn what the switched do. I am surprised he even armed it. I guess what my friend Jay says about he Inspire is true. Carl would of been better off giving Jay $2000 and letting him kick Carl in the shin. I always thought he was joking.

My LHS has only been around 5 years. I've probably been going there 3 and a half. I didn't know they were there until my son won a gift certificate from them. It was only for $25. The manager at the time was nice and gave my son a $50 Syma heli. I appreciated that and ended up buying a used mCX2 that I can get new today for the same price. But that is where it started.

I hated their web site back then. I begged them to let me do it. One day they agreed, but I would have to get paid in store credit. So I completely revamped their site. And then I started doing their fliers. Then I took over the social media, producing video reviews, and whatever else they asked. They treated me well, so I put a lot of time and effort into everything. Because of that I've been able to own a large number of planes, helis, boats, cars and trucks.

I am upset that they are closing, but not mad. I know when they moved to a much larger location that the rent went way up. My friend Bob S. predicted they would close then. He has seen a few LHSs open, try and go big, and then close. The rent was only part of the issue. A series of events happened that are really no ones fault, but the decision to close was sudden.

I will miss the LHS because I made a lot of friends there and we would hang out there for hours and just learn from each other. I enjoyed helping new hobbyists out. My biggest pet peeve was people who would come in, walk around and while leaving very loudly proclaim that the prices...Continue Reading

I was at a Fun Fly over the weekend and the vendor there had a few Radian Pros for sale. I was kind of surprised when one of the other guys behind the flight line asked about it and other pilots immediately started saying how they all killed theirs and did not recommend it. I have about 10 flights on mine and it climbs fast and glides beautifully. After a few hours it started become clear how they killed their RPs as I watched them crash one plane after another. One smashed the nose off a CZ cub on take off. Another went home with only one out of 5 planes still flying and talking about how he has nothing to fly a 2200 3S batt in at the end of the day. I know some of these guys have been flying longer than I have, but I think they just fly things until they die. I brought a lot to fly over the 2 days at the Fun Fly and did not crash anything...even the Rare Bear.

Part of bringing so much to the Fun Fly was for maintenance checks. It is about that time of year where everything gets tested. I do it in the Spring and the Fall. The servos on the UMX planes got a cleaning and little FaderLube and the other electronics and surfaces checked. The bigger planes got a full test of the servos and electronics with a little glue, tape, or oil where needed. I didn't get to everything, but I got a lot done. The only issue I found was the day after the Fun Fly on an Inverza. The tail wheel was missing and I added a little tape to the rudder because it looks like I landed without it and...Continue Reading
