Hi there people

so.. I'm pretty sure that if you are into quads, you noticed that Diatone released a Boatload of quads this year.. I think to manny actually, but I'm sure they thought things through

nar·cis·sism - extreme selfishness, with a grandiose view of one's own talents and a craving for admiration, as characterizing a personality type.

I do not frequent this forum as much as I did in years past. Wait, let me rephrase that. I do not POST in this forum as often as I did in years past. Why is that? Mainly because there are way TOO many self appointed, narcissistic genius' that know everything there is to know present here. Since I am not as self absorbed and insecure, I do not feel the need to contribute to threads as often as I used to.

Being a glow engine person about the only forums I look at are the Engine, Fuel Plane Talk, and Aircraft - Fuel - Engines and Accessories in the Classified section. I might look at Trader Talk for some comic relief now and then too.

But man, there are a few daily posters that just cannot help themselves when it comes to 'one-upmanship' and feeling that incessant need to post in EVERY thread possible whether what they are posting is relevant to the subject of the thread or not. These people often derail the original thread topic to their own agenda whenever possible. I can only wonder if they were not held or hugged enough as a child. What horrors have they experienced to need such constant attention and the feeling to be superior?

At first it was somewhat comical, but of late it is a real put off to even reading the posts in this forum. I suppose this forum is not special. These individuals most likely exist on other forums too. At least in the past, before the advent of the internet our/my contact with such people was minimal or extremely limited. Of course that was also back in the day when such people were dealt with in ways that, in today's mamby pamby society, would get you sent to jail. In the military these 'correctional' deeds were referred to as 'blanket parties'. It was amazing how behavior was modified and 'adjusted' quite readily then. Ah, the good ole days....

Alas, today the world is filled with keyboard confidence and big talk.

Still windy ( Gale force ) = Oh dear !

The blue bomb ( hand throw plane ) = Bent bird .

So been trying to find the CG ...

To this effect I used a fair amount of Hot glue and the plane still flew like a spear !
Though ! .. The more weight added to the back , the further it went .

So I gave up on the hot glue and moved to LEAD .. ( Lead shot to be precise - No4 shot ? I don't know )
If you look at the pictures , I made two holes as far back as possible and then pushed lead shot into the holes ..
First two then four , and each time the plane glided better ...
Bottom line , it took 14 pieces of shot + a bit of foam safe cyno .. ( Glue the shot )
So in one of the pictures you will see the mould line where my CG currently sits just a little behind ..
I would suggest @ the mould line or just ahead if you plan to RC ( As a starting point )

Thats it for this one , I might Chuck it some , but I will not RC it , just too many funky bends ...

I did mention in the previous thread that I fixed the elevators with some laminating film ..
Me thinks olds likes the laminating film ...

I didn't mention the model in the photo on my last blog because I hadn't yet flown it.

This, I must say, was among the most pleasant surprises I had in a long time.

This was one of four models given to me by a friend who had a kit manufacturing company at one time. The proliferation of ARF and RTF models, while expanding the hobby as a whole, hurt his business.

Anyway, two models were complete and this was one of the two complete models. The other was a three-channel airplane of his own design called "The Sparrow." I'd seen this model fly and I now own it. Unfortunately, the servo arm for the rudder broke in flight. I'd never seen one fail! Damage is done, but fixable since it crashed in thick grass. We're getting together soon to assess and repair the damage. It's just too cool not to. It strongly resembles a Fokker Eindecker with a toy bust of Anakin Skywalker in his podracer goggles at the controls.

As for this powered glider with a brushed Jeti ESC and motor, an ancient ArtTech 1300mAh 3S li-po and an even more ancient Hitec 72MHz AM receiver, I dragged it into the house to investigate the possibility of a brushless upgrade.

Cleanup began right away and while I knew the glider was in good shape, I didn't know just how good. Revealed beneath the dust was a nearly new, magnificently constructed model lacking only a canopy. No scratches on the wing and almost none underneath the fuselage beyond what one would expect after only a few...Continue Reading

Review & build log of 180$ HOBBYMATE Comet VX220 Stretch X 5" FPV quad DIY, PNP, BNF - 1800KV (6S) or 2500KV (4S)

I recently tested 145mm DIY KIT from HOBBYMATE and it was fun to build and fun to fly because it flew great and I had zero issues with it so far.

Now I will build and test HOBBYMATE Comet VX220 Stretch X 5" fpv racing drone. Its a high-performance racing drone as manufacturer says.
And from my unboxing experience (pics are in gallery) all parts in the box look high quality. Hobbymate didn't save any money on selection of part for this quad.
And, most of all, all that at most welcomed price of 180$ for DIY KIT.
Comet VX220 comes with airbot F4 V6 flight controller and typhoon 35A (Max 45A), simple connection between the fc and esc is done with a 8pin cable, which saves your time in building and maintenance.
If you don't have time or experience for self building it, you can select prebuilt version in PNP or BNF format.

Description:
Comet VX220 fpv drone is a combination of high performance, stability and durability.
Low-deck design means centralized mass and excellent handling.
Stretched-X motor layout is the choice of top racers because the rear props are further from the "dirty air" coming from the front props.
The result is smoother cornering and higher top speed.

Features:
  • 5mm full 3k carbon fiber twill
  • High quality 12.9 class Steel counter-sunk screws on the drone
  • Airbot F4 V6 flight controller, tested

Review - Hobby King Micro SBEC (Switching) Voltage Regulator 5V/3A (4 min 21 sec)

I'm always looking for good switching voltage regulators to use for my Micro Aircraft builds where I want to use low voltage components and use 2S Power or convert an OPTO ESC into a Non-OPTO ESC.

Here are the Specs:

Type: Switch mode BEC
Input: 6V~26V (2~6S LiPoly)
Output: 5V/3A Constant
Dimension: 16.5 x 16.5 x 8mm

Here is a link to this Micro SBEC:

The remaining Modes are Thermal and Land. The Cirrus’s trailing edge camber can be set to about 3-5 degrees down to increase the camber and lower the thermal speed. Since the speed will be lower I would set 100 percent on the D/R menu. The elevator setting could be set on the TX and it will be remembered. I am usually in a turn when in a thermal so I put in a little more up elevator trim. When I roll out and go straight I may see pre stall porpoising so I take the trim out. Of course you can cheat and put SAFE Self Level ON when thermaling (or searching for a thermal). Purists will get upset but Cirrus is your model. When both ailerons and flaps are cambered down you are at greater risk for stall because there is no washout on the wing (like you will get in Landing Mode). So stalls can be dangerous unless you have about 100 feet or 10 seconds to recover. Here is my stall recovery procedure:

Go full power as this will put you into the Launch mode. Flaps and ailerons will retract intoa minimum wing drag configuration. The prop blast over the elevator will allow more pitch control. If Self Level is On the nose may be down and so up elevator will be applied automatically. If the stall has not been broken then apply down elevator and opposite rudder (if a spin or spiral is seen). Down elevator with prop thrust over the elevator will cause a dive and increase in airspeed where recovery is possible. Now this is theory and will be flight tested...Continue Reading

Other reasons for Flight Modes is to deploy flaps or spoilerons or flaperons. For example in the Speed FM you could reflex both ailerons and flaps to streamline the airfoil to go faster with power off glide. Of course you would most likely put in down elevator trim to achieve a 10 degree nose down attitude. This would be with SAFE On or Off. In SAFE ON the flight control movements are much less than when Self Level is On. This is OK and is to be expected. In the D/R & Expo menu you could scroll the Switch position and select Flight Mode. Then you would most likely set a rate and expo value at high speed that would not be too much but comfortable and not pitch sensitive. There will be more on this when I go into flight testing and adjustment. More on the FM Table:

Spee is the FM for power off and best dive speed. If you like to dive at a vertical 90 degree descent or a 10 degree glide angle this is your Speed Mode. You will go faster if your prop is feathered and not turning (or windmilling). That’s why I will be using the 60 amp ESC with a programable prop brake. Later I may try a folding prop. Lets say your full throttle dive speed is measured (or estimated) at 60 mph. If your brake is strong enough and you can stop the prop your power off dive speed will be greater. How much? I had a motor glider that doubled the speed. Full throttle gave me 60 mph and power off folded prop gave me 120 mph. Of course the Cirrus is a different...Continue Reading

These settings are for my DX9 TX with the stock SR22 AR636A receiver:
1. Throttle
2. Right Aileron
3. Elevator
4. Rudder
5. 2 Flaps on a Y cable
6. Left Aileron
7.
8. SAFE Self Level On/Off on switch B (You can use channel 7 if you have a 7 or 8 channel TX.
9.

If you have not used Flight Modes you are in for a treat. Ever go full power and the model pitches up and over (like the original Radian). Just when you get both hands on the TX it’s too late. In Flight Modes you use the Throttle stick for 3 different Elevator trim settings. So for high throttle you would use down trim.
