Wings Flight Simulator Overview and Setup Tips (36 min 10 sec)

This was the culmination of years of work built by FPV pilots from the community looking to fill a void in the wing simulator space. This was a labor of love for the duo, and having been part of the testing process, I'm proud of the work they were able to accomplish.

Hope you enjoy the simulator!

More info coming soon...Going to be updating this thread with additional photos and commentary...This video should tide you over in the meantime.

Mini Drak Build Log (1 hr 24 min 16 sec)

AKK Tech reached out to me to review some of their FPV products so I browsed their inventory and ordered some of the basics...This video covers a little more than the regular unboxing, but long story short - the power outputs met and exceeded the stated rates, but the nicer benefit which I'm still waiting to test is that the transmitter and camera had much lower radiated UHF noise than most similar products. That's not really a concern if you're running the standard 5.8/2.4 setup but if you're running a weird mid range combo like 433mhz for control and 5.8ghz for video with long range antennas - it matters a lot. Usually about 10 inches of separation is enough for even the worst offenders, but if we're talking about say a quad - separation isn't an option, so it matters what the emissions charts look like around the control ranges.

Anyway - here's the video
Unboxing AKK Tech CA20 600TVL FPV Camera and Switchable 5.8 ghz VTX (20 min 32 sec)

For the CA20 camera - pros/cons:
+ price - you'll be saving about $10 from its identical twin, the HS1177
+ 600tvl camera (same board as the HS1177)
+ picture quality was what you would expect
+ plastic case made the whole unit a little lighter
+ wide input voltage 5v-20v input makes it good for ultralight setups
- plastic case might be a plus or a minus depending on your application
- 2.8 lens included - little too narrow for quad or racing work...sweet spot is in the 2.1 to 2.8 range

For the X1P 25mw/200mw/600mw switchable vtx
+ very small form factor
+ option for pigtail or hardmount SMA
+ one button operation - again a space saving feature and very intuitive to use
+ 3 power levels for a very competitive price
+ measured power levels exceeded stated ratings
- no built in voltage regulator to feed out 5v...you'll need to power your camera separately
- spurious emissions in the UHF band measured at max power (to be fair, I haven't found many 5.8ghz transmitters that are innocent of this either, just some are less egregious than others).

This is a work in progress. I will update this first post with the corrected sequence as soon as go through the process successfully.

*** Note to other builders - please share your logs here so other folks have one place to research for ideas.

This was a sample quad kit obtained for the purposes of review from Armattan Quads.

Video List:
Unboxing

Stats:
PZ0420 + Runcam - AUW Dry - 788g

I'll be posting my build notes and observations as I go through the process.

Here's the initial component list I plan on running for this rig:

Ready to Fly Quads/Airbot Mini Titan 2208/2300kv motors
RCTimer 20A BLHeli Opto ESCs
Naze32 Acro (for Maiden, then move to a BrainFPV Flight Controller)

At this point the plan will be to test various 6" and 7" HQ props on 3s and 4s until I find the flight characteristics I'm looking for. AUW weight with electronics and a GoPro is somewhere in the 750-800g range so depending on your battery you could be north of a kilogram by the time all is said and done. As a general rule you want to keep the rigs as light as possible to take advantage of the power to weight ratios for your chosen motor....Continue Reading

Hey gang. This was a video request from some of the new pilots in our group. Thought I'd document a barebones configuration setup and use this as a jumping off point to other more in depth videos (like kvosd).

Let me know if you have any questions.

Should be obvious copper tape and some cat shielding does wonders quieting otherwise noisy systems, but for those of you without RF Explorers, it's impossible to quantify just how much...until now that is

First a few things. I have on my bench

1) RCTimer MinimOSD v1.0
2) 3DR MinimOSD v1.1
3) ebay MinimOSD v0.1

I scanned all three and they all walk over the UHF control band. This in itself is fascinating because I was under the impression that recent versions of the MinimOSD board switched from Linear to Switching regulators. The Switching regulator options have options of switching at 550mhz, or 1200mhz, whereas the linear ones are just that. I have to check the schematics, but I didn't see any spikes in those ranges yet there is a significant rise in the noise floor up to 12" away from the unit.

Anecdotally, I've read across different posts that cpu processor clock cycles happen to coincide with the control band - only about -100db but still, it's noticeable. MinimOSD on the other hand raised the noise floor substantially within the typical distances of components on multirotors.

Anyway - I stitched together some scans...should be obvious which ones are which...Confirms obvious things we already know - like put your parts away from each as much as possible, but what's even more exciting is, how much copper foil tape dampens the effect

Fastest build to date, and I have to say - I'm love love loving this frame. The clean/dirty plate concept was enough to isolate vibrations from a chipped prop and out of track prop. Money well spent!

It appears uaviation.net is no longer selling the kits...You can still download the files and get the boards fabbed yourself for like $15 at oshpark.com

I'm an APM guy, but I'd heard about the CC3D, and just like any other fabulous piece of technology - it's unavailability makes it just that much more desirable. So I was out on ebay just checking to see what the latest gougers were charging when I came across a rather peculiar listing - a Maker's kit for a CC3D.

It was just a PCB board with 2 pigtails. In the listing was a link to a bootloader and a bill of materials. You take the BOM and create an order with Digikey - and as everyone knows - 2 days later you get a present in the mail I'd seen the curious inventor's instructional videos on how to solder SMD parts but it's just like anything else - they made it look so deceptively easy. The good news is, it actually is as easy as they make it out to be but there are special tools and techniques that are necessary to do this right.

Mistakes will be made and you will need the right tools to back out of those issues (i.e. solder braid and flux to wick away solder bridges), but the trick to getting through is proper planning, the right tools and lots of patience. For anyone wondering - unless you have the equipment, this isn't even close to being cost effective - but that's not why I took the challenge. I wanted a neat project that would test my skills - and boy were they tested!

Anyway - enough...Continue Reading

This is a pretty straight forward process, but the bits you need to remember are the following:

* every board comes preconfigured with its own baud rate and that will be either 9600 or 115200
* S0 is the parameter in APM_Config.h that sets the baud rate for the FTDI port - set this to whatever your bluetooth module is
* When in Mission Planner - select the com port of the bluetooth module and the correct baud rate.

The part I can't explain is that despite the fact that the above 3 settings were set to 115,200, the com port itself in device manager was set to 9600...yet mysteriously it all worked.

You'll see what I'm talking about in the video...

Enjoy

This is a video tutorial for loading the MegapirateNG (MPNG) port of Ardupilot Mega onto a Crius All in One Pro v1.1 flight controller board.

The v2.0 board setup is not that much different and if you take the time to read the new parameters in APM_Config.h - you can pretty much figure out which parameters need to be activated.

Here are the links you'll need..

This covers all the tools (PC) you'll need to grab the latest code and flash your flight controller with the firmware.
