My Visuo XS809S just arrived. First impressions are quite good. It is well packaged, and the overall quality of the quadcopter, and transmitter seem above average for quads in this price range. I really like that there is a micro SD card slot on the quad for capturing pictures, and video from the on board camera.

After getting in a couple flights, I can say that the altitude hold on this actually works quite well. The quad remains very stable, and holds its position, even in a slight breeze. The included battery gave me nearly 10 minutes of flight time on its first charge. The LED lights are visible even during daylight hours, so I expect them to work perfectly for helping to maintain orientation when flying at night.

The 3 different rate modes make this an excellent choice for beginners. In low rates it is easy to control, and yaw is slow enough to not change directions so quickly that it takes you by surprise. The second rate increases pitch, and speeds up yaw just a bit, and the third rate gives the quad much more aggressive pitch angles, and allows the drone to easily cut through wind, and gusty conditions.

I just got the APP installed on my phone, and am anxious to get in some more flight time. I will get some pictures, video from the on board camera, and see how well the WiFi FPV actually works. The APP is called XSW UFO, and can be found in the Google Play Store for Android users, and in the APP Store for Apple users.

First quick test flight, trying the different...Continue Reading

As a long time fan of all things Micro RC I figured it was time to give one of these little WLtoys A242 1/24 scale RTR 4wd micro Rally Cars a go, and see just what they're all about. I have an RCP track in my hobby room, that I love to run my Kyosho Mini-Z's and Mini-Z Buggy on. I also tried the Redcat Sumo trucks, the Losi 1/24 brushed Rally, and SCT, and the Subotech trucks. None of them came even close to being as fun, or handling as well as my Kyosho Z rigs so they generally collected dust.

I'd watched a lot of videos of these 1/24 offerings from WLtoys, and I knew they were great little vehicles for the price. The problem was that they looked a bit too fast for my RCP track, and it turns out, they are. These little things scream, especially considering they're running brushed motors. They also handle quite well, and absolutely blow away any of the Losi, Redcat, Subotech etc. cars, and trucks that I have tried.

For those not familiar with this WLtoys lineup of A series cars and trucks, here is a quick run down of the basic features. You get a 2.4ghz radio system with 2 in 1 RX/ESC, a 3 wire micro steering servo, an aluminum alloy lower chassis, and aluminum alloy top plate. The cars are equipped with shaft driven 4wd with slipper clutch, four wheel independent suspension, and a full set of ball bearings. They also include a 500mah 20C 2s 7.4v LiPo battery and a basic charger. All spare parts are available at numerous online shops, and there is a growing list of hop up...Continue Reading

I fly alone 90% of the time, and at least half of that flying is done in my backyard, over, and around a lake. Flying near the water makes me very nervous when wearing goggles, so I decided I needed another option that would give me the benefits of both LOS, and FPV flight. So began my research for putting together an FPV ground station that would be relatively inexpensive, and quick, and easy to set up.

After some web browsing, and a few Google searches, I managed put this little GS together for $40 using items from Amazon, and eBay. So far it has worked flawlessly for me. I'll be taking it to the park with me in the next day or so to see what kind of range I can get out of it. For my yard, and the ball fields across the street it's been great.

Amazon $14 Monitor

Amazon $12 Tripod

$10 eBay 5.8ghz RX

$6 Amazon LCD Voltmeter

I power the unit with an Infinity 1300mah 11.1v LiPo battery that I already had, but any cheap 3s LiPo will do the trick.

The only soldering necessary for this build was to make a pig tail with an XT60 for the battery, and a couple JST connectors for the monitor, voltmeter, and receiver. Everything else is plug and play. In fact, for those that aren't comfortable soldering, you could use wire nuts, or crimp connectors and not have to solder anything.

I plan on upgrading the antenna with an Aomway clover leaf in the near future, but as of right now I'm pretty pleased with the way this thing performs for what I have invested.

I will post a few more pics of how I have it all hooked together ASAP. For now here is a pic of the completed build. Feel free to ask any questions you might have if you're looking to build something similar.

Happy Flying!!

Usmile HSK5 220mm budget FPV Racing Drone Build. All parts available on Amazon.

With warm weather moving in, those of us that live where it snows half the year, will finally be able to get outside and do some flying without freezing our butts off

I've decided to put together a budget 5 inch quad to do some park flying with this spring. I've put together a list of most of the parts I've used for my build. I had some Holybro 2205 2550kv motors, and 30A ESC's in my boxes waiting to be used on something, so below are the parts I'll be using with those. I know not everyone has motors, and ESC's lying around, so I've also added some budget options for those as well, in case anyone wants to do a similar build.

For anyone that has looked at this frame on Amazon, and wondered about it, I am very happy to say that it is an extremely nice frame. The assembly instructions are easy to follow. The frame kit includes all necessary hardware, as well as a carbon protective plate for the battery, a foam pad for the battery plate, and a nice battery strap. It is also solid as a rock once it is assembled. I have to say that I am really impressed with it.

Flight Controller

Everything listed above is Prime eligible, so Prime members can put together this great performing 5 inch quad for under $145 with free 2 day shipping. Obviously you will still need to add a receiver to match your radio, but I'm not...Continue Reading

There's a new 3D printer on the block!

NOTICE-The product description on the GB site says that this printer has a heated bed. That description is incorrect. The board has connections for a heated build plate, however a heated plate is NOT included in the kit.

EDIT-My printer arrived with a bad X Axis stepper motor. For anyone else that may have experienced the same thing the replacement motor can be found here.

The Hoony H8 has a 210x210x240mm print area, and is designed to be an easy to assemble kit, that offers high precision printing, and faster than standard print speeds.

So, how does this printer actually perform compared to the competition? Let's find out.

For starters, you get a kit that has some assembly already done for you from the factory. There is basically a structure to assemble, and some cables to plug into their designated connectors on the control board. There is an assembly video, a manual, and some sample print files all on the included micro SD card, so the process is pretty straight forward, even for beginners.

So far I am pretty impressed with the quality, and design. Now lets see if it's capable of producing the kind of print quality we've come to expect from printers in this price range.

Check out the pictures of the general assembly process. I will update this post with more pics, and info as soon as I get the printer tuned and running.

Please don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have. I am happy to help when I can.

Stay tuned for...Continue Reading

Edit-6/8/2018 Right now this little racer is on sale for only $69.99 Click me to purchase.

Wow! Things sure have changed in the past year or so. Not too long ago, many of us were spending $70-$80 on small brushed FPV racing drones. Today, you can get brushless racers, with much better electronics packages for around the same price.

The new Zing 110 is a perfect example of one of these inexpensive, yet nicely equipped brushless micro quads. This little racer is an excellent model for pilots that have been flying brushed quads, and are ready for an increase in power, and speed, or for pilots that want something small enough to fly around the backyard, or small park without spending too much.

For $85 you're getting a pretty nice package. At the heart of the quad is the popular Flycolor Raptor S-Tower F3 FC with OSD and 12A 4 in 1 BLHeli-S 2-3s Dshot ESC, paired to some 1104 4300kv motors. For FPV duty you get what looks to me like the KingKong/LDARC Q25 25mw mini 5.8ghz VTX hooked to an 800TVL 1.6mm CMOS camera. The package also includes two full sets of KingKong 2345 props.

The quad arrives with Betaflight 3.1.5 firmware which works perfectly fine, but for those that want the newest firmware the Flycolor FC has a boot button, making flashing new firmware quick, and easy. They even give you a set of prop guards for those that prefer to fly with them.

All in all I am pretty impressed with this little quad. It amazes me how far this sector of the RC hobby has come...Continue Reading

EDIT-5/28/2018 Now on sale for only $125.99 Click me to order.

FuriBee has been a bit hit or miss lately. They've had some excellent models, and they've had a few models with some pretty serious issues. It looks like they are redeeming themselves with this new Geniuser 160 though, as this drone is great, and has a lot going for it.

For starters they've equipped this quad with the excellent Omnibus F4 flight controller with OSD. They've given it a 4 in 1 BLHeli-S 28A ESC running DShot, as well as a 2.1mm 800TVL CCD camera, and a VTX with 0mw / 25mw / 100mw / 200mw output settings. You even get a buzzer, and a programmable LED light bar. The real star of this show though is the huge 1506 3400kv motors, swinging Gemfan 3052 props.

Available as an Frsky BNF, or as a PNP model. This quad has loads of thrust on 4s, but also flies very well on 3s. Flight video on both voltages coming in just a few. For now, check out the pics, and be sure to ask any questions you might have.

Happy Flying!!

A new toy just showed up on my front porch The Hubsan H122D X4 Storm is a new brushed micro FPV quad that is available as a complete RTF package with FPV monitor, and goggles for only $129 or as a standard RTF package with just the quad and transmitter for $79

This little drone has a 130mm wheelbase, and is powered by some pretty peppy 10mm brushed motors, and a 7.6v 710mah 30c LIHV battery.

I expect that this will be an excellent package for new pilots ready to experience FPV flight, or a great next step for those that have been playing around with flying LOS quads, and want an affordable way to try out first person view drones.

First LOS test flight. DVR footage, and video from the quads micro SD card slot coming soon.

The new HobbyMate Elite 6A/80W Multi Chemistry AC/DC Balance Charger is now available, and is an excellent, full featured, computerized charger, that won't break the bank.

This little unit has a nice bright blue backlit screen making it easy to move through the menu. It will charge and discharge 1-6s Lilon/LiPo/LiFe/LiHV,1-15cell Nicd/NiMh, as well as 2-20V PB battery, Smart Battery Phantom I,II,III. You also get all the functions sometimes only offered on more expensive, high end chargers. You get Charge, Balance, Discharge,Terminal Voltage Control,Lithium Battery capacity & voltage checking,Battery Internal Resistance checking,Lipo Storage mode, Data storage and loading, and Lipo Meter.

I have been putting this little charger through its paces for about a month now. I have used it to charge every battery type, and capacity in my collection. I've used it to charge 5000mah car/truck packs, as well as 300mah micro drone packs, and everything in between.

This charger has performed flawlessly, and accurately. When used to balance charge, or storage charge/discharge my quad batteries, individual cell voltages are always within .01v of each other. That's great for a charger costing only $39

Anyone looking to upgrade from a RTR/RTF included charger, or looking to put another charger on the bench to decrease downtime, this HobbyMate Elite is well worth the price, and is an excellent option for anyone on a budget. I like it so much that it has become my desktop charger, and my older Hitec charger has been moved to my bench.

Check out the pics, and feel free to ask any questions you might have.

Edit-11/6/2018 Now on sale here for only $50.99 during the 11/11 sales event.

The new MJX Technic Bugs 3 175mm Mini RTF brushless quad is now in stock and ready for shipping!

Ok, my initial thoughts upon opening the box were, wow! It's smaller than I was expecting. It is actually pretty close to 175mm diagonally, motor to motor, but for some reason it just looks smaller. It feels very well built, which I expected. I have always liked the original Bugs 3, so I expected good things out of this new mini version, and that same sense of quality, and durability is present with this smaller version.

The radio feels good in my hands, and all of the buttons are easy enough to get to, without feeling cramped, or like you have to stretch fingers to reach them. Binding was a cinch, and took all of about 2 seconds. Hold the arm button down on the radio when powering it on, and it beeps twice, plug the battery into the quad, and bam, your in action.

Much like the original Bugs 3 the lights are nice and bright, and that's something I love about these MJX quads. They make for great night flyers. The proprietary battery is sure to bother some folks, and rightfully so, but I think once spare batteries are available, it won't be too big a deal, as long as they are reasonably priced. I am charging the battery now, and have a timer running so I can see just how long it takes with the supplied USB charger.

On the first flight the battery lasted longer than I thought it would, considering...Continue Reading

The HappyModel Mantis 85 has been getting quite a bit of attention lately as a great brushless micro for indoor, and outdoor use. As you'd expect from its name, the Mantis 85 is 85mm diagonally from motor to motor. The little quad comes well protected, in a nicely decorated box, with a foam insert that securely holds the Mantis, the included 400mah 2s battery, a manual, and a spare set of 1935 props.

The quad itself features a 2mm carbon fiber frame, with a reinforcing aluminum brace. You get an Omnibus F4 flight controller with built in OSD, SE1102 9000kv motors, and a 6A 4 in 1 BLheli-S DShot 600 ESC. FPV duties are handled by a 600TVL AIO camera with 25mw VTX. The F4 flight controller is pre-loaded with Betaflight 3.2

Available as an Flysky AFHDS-2A, Frsky D8, or DSMX/DSM2 BNF. It is also available as a Flysky AFHDS-2A RTF with Flysky FS-i6 radio system. The ready to fly version is truly an amazing value, costing only $132.99 The best part is, it comes bound to the included radio, with fail safe, and flight modes pre-programmed, so there is no need to do any setting up in Betaflight before flying. You can simply charge the battery and take to the air. This makes it a very good ready to fly package for beginners looking at getting their first brushless micro, or anyone that just wants a ready to fly model, without having to deal with the hassle of programming in Betaflight.

My first impressions of this little racer are good. It is very well built, and has a nice open...Continue Reading

EDIT-7/16/2018 This printer is now on sale for $149 Click me to order.

A 3D printer in every average household is closer to becoming reality every day! The Aladdinbox SkyCube is truly a beginner friendly 3D printer that requires no special skills, or assembly to use. Best part is, it is also extremely affordable!

If you've been thinking about getting a 3D printer for you, and your family to have some fun with, then this completely assembled, basically ready to print right out of the box printer might be just what you're looking for!

This little printer is about as easy as it gets to set up, and start using. I literally pulled it out of the box, removed the safety clips from inside the print area, loaded the filament, selected an object from the included SD card and started printing. If you can operate a computer, or smartphone, then you can start 3D printing with this excellent little machine.

In the box you get the printer, a magnetic print bed, which makes removing your printed objects very easy. a 1GB micro SD card pre loaded with some fun things to print, a card reader, a USB cable for connecting to your computer, should you choose to print that way. I personally do all of my printing offline using SD cards. You get a spool of PLA filament to get you started, a glue stick for aiding in bed adhesion for your prints, and a quick start user guide which explains basically everything you need to know to start printing.

The printer itself is compatible with Cura,...Continue Reading

The new Emax Babyhawk R Racing edition micro FPV drone has been making quite a stir in the drone community since being released. As soon as I heard that this new micro from Emax was capable of handling 4s power, I couldn't wait to get my hands on one. Well, my wait is over!

This great looking little racer is very well equipped, and comes in at a very nice price point for what you are getting.

The quad is built on a carbon fiber frame, with replaceable 3mm arms. You get the option of running 2 inch, or 2.5 inch, or 3 inch props with optional arms sold separately, which makes this perhaps the most versatile micro platform currently available.

This little racer comes with the Emax Magnum tower system with F3 FC + 4-in-1 12A BLHeli-S ESC capable of running 2-4S batteries. It is preloaded with Betaflight 3.2.2 and power comes from the very zippy Emax RS1106 6000kv motors. For FPV we're given the Foxeer Arrow Micro CCD camera, and a 25/200mw 40 channel 5.8ghz VTX. Also included are 2 full sets of Avan 2 inch 4 blade propellers.

This set up on 4s should have insane amounts of power, and punch outs should be absolutely awesome! Check out the pics, and stay tuned for flight video coming shortly.

GoFly RC is relatively new at making FPV Racing Drones, but they are already changing the micro BNF game. The new Falcon CP90-Pro is an awesome little racer that is packed with features, and performs incredibly well.

This little quadcopter comes pre loaded with Betaflight on its Omnibus F3 AIO flight controller with OSD. It has a 20A 4 in 1 BLHeli-S ESC running DShot 600 and powering 1104 7500kv motors. EDIT-8/31/2018 This buggy is now only $129 during the latest sales event. Click me to order.

It looks like Gearbest is expanding their product line, and is now going to be selling LRP products The LRP S10 BX BL Blast 2 RTR 4WD buggy is now available on their site. There have been a lot of questions surrounding this buggy, and I am hoping that this thread, and info will answer the majority of those questions.

First off, it does appear that the buggy is indeed a genuine LRP product. It is however being sold by Gearbest with a ZD Racing electronics package. This explains how they are selling it for so much less than the buggy can be purchased for elsewhere. As you will see in the pics below, the buggy itself is packaged in an actual LRP box, which even shows the LRP electronics on it. It also includes a full LRP assembly manual. Apparently Gearbest has made a deal with the factory to have their own, less expensive version. I don't see this being much of an issue, as I have some past experience with the ZD Racing electronics package, and it has never given me any issues. The ESC is a 45A splashproof model, and the motor is 3650 3300kv. The included servo is just your standard 3 wire job. It gets the job done, but can always be upgraded for very little money later on.

The included radio system is the same radio that ZD Racing are now including in many of their newer packages. Again this is just a basic 2.4ghz AFHDS radio, but it works just fine, and has a Flysky look...Continue Reading

Brushless RTR RC trucks are nothing new. There is no shortage of options in this ever growing category of RC vehicles. A brushless ready to run with shaft driven 4WD, that includes a 2400mah 2s LiPo and a balance charger for only $135 though? Now that's something you don't see every day.

The ZD Racing ZTX-10 is exactly that. A complete ready to run package that gives you everything you need to start running your new brushless 4WD truck except four AA batteries for the remote.

This little truck looks fantastic! You get a 2.4GHZ radio system, with the receiver enclosed in a sealed radio box. You get a 45A splash proof brushless ESC paired with a T3650 3300kv water proof motor. The truck is equipped with an aluminum alloy center shaft, steel front CVD shafts, steel rear dog bones, oil filled shocks with aluminum caps, all metal gears with sealed differentials, an adjustable slipper clutch, front and rear sway bars, and a 2s LiPo battery, and balance charger. All that for under $150 to your door. A few years ago I would have said that this isn't even possible. Today, it is reality. Hobby grade RC models are finally becoming affordable for everyone.

Let's take a close look at this incredibly affordable package, and then take it out for a run in the snow. (Video coming shortly)

EDIT- 2/27/2018 This quad is now also available as a PNP, or BNF model for those that aren't into building it themselves. It can be purchased here for $133.90 Click me.

Parts are starting to roll in. Got the frame for my next build. The HobbyMate Sparrow 145 145mm frame. The 20A BLHeli-S 4 in 1 ESC and F3 AIO Flight Controller with OSD should be here Tuesday. This carbon fiber frame should be very tough. The top and bottom plates are both 1.5mm thick, and the arms are a very stiff 4mm thick, and 8mm wide. I expect that this should be able to take a very good beating, and should you break an arm the entire frame kit is affordable, and readily available, so spare parts won't be an issue. This frame is designed for 130X-140X motors. I had some SZ Speed 1306 3300kv motors here that I decided to use for this build. I plan to fly this on 4s, but it should perform pretty well on 3s batteries as well.

EDIT 1/3/2018

Everything has arrived now except for the FPV camera, and the receiver, so the build continues. I have taken detailed pics of every step along the way, so that anyone wanting to do this build, even those without prior build experience, should be able to complete it relatively easily, with plenty of visual references.

The first thing to do is get the base, and arms of the frame assembled. I then mounted my motors to the arms. I also took this opportunity to add some 3D printed wire protectors, but these are obviously not a must have.

Next up is to mount the 4 in 1...Continue Reading

The TransTec TurBowing Kobe 140 is a very cool new 140mm FPV racer. This quadcopter has something we don't usually see on quads in this size class. It has prop guards that completely surround the props, much like the guards found on Tiny Whoops.

ATTENTION! The product description on the Gearbest page is outdated. This quad is equipped an F3 FC with built in OSD, 15A 2-4s DShot 4 in 1 ESC, 1306 3300kv motors, and a 700TVL CCD 1080p HD FPV camera with switchable 25/100/200mw power output on the VTX. In the product description it shows individual ESC's mounted on the arms, and also states that a CMOS FPV cameras is standard equipment. This is no longer accurate and I have notified GB that they need to update the description on their page.

The quad comes with Betaflight installed, and flies very well in completely stock form. This racer is currently in stock and on sale for $132

FuriBee has been hitting it out of the park lately with some awesome performing FPV racers. Their new X140 Racer is no exception, and looks like it might be another grand slam!

This great looking 140mm stretched X quadcopter is loaded with great features. Available as a PNP model ready for your choice of receiver, or as a Flysky, Frsky, or Futaba BNF they have covered the bases for users of all of todays popular radios.
