After the successful Phoenix CH-53 Stallion models, Rick was looking for the next copter to make and so I suggested the Sikorsky S-97 Raider. While Rick developed the model in Blender, I was working on the flight capabilities in Builder so a great collaboration. It has been a pleasure, thanks for the honour of working with you Rick and of posting the finished models.

Phoenix Models

Three versions are available for download here:

1) Sikorsky Raider Prototype P1 with side mounted gun pod and rockets.

2) Canadian Search and Rescue (SAR) with drop tanks.

3) Indian Air Force Sarang Demonstration Team.

The Sikorsky S-97 Raider is a high-speed scout and attack compound helicopter (main rotors and pusher prop) with a coaxial rotor system under development by Sikorsky Aircraft. Sikorsky planned to offer it for the United States Army's Armed Aerial Scout program, along with other possible uses including civilian applications such as Search and Rescue.

The S-97 made its maiden flight on 22 May 2015 and is a continuation of the experimental coaxial S-69 from the 1970s and the more recent X2 technology demonstrator of 2010. Construction of two prototypes began in October 2012, the first prototype (P1) was revealed in 2014 and has been used for flight testing while the second (P2) is for use as a demonstrator. The S-97 Raider is wholly funded by private investment with Sikorsky providing 75 percent of the costs and 53 principal suppliers providing the rest.

Swallow 800 (7 min 37 sec)

Rolled out of bed about 5.45am and walked out the door about 6.05am ( Sunday Morning )

So much wind this year .. Sunday morning is the only low wind time in about a week .

Swallow 800 > Mistakes !

I used 4.3g servos , dont bother ! Just use 9g servos .. When you glue the wing ( foam bits ) it is already very close to achieving CG . So when you pile in your hardware , your shifting that CG forward ..
I used some screws on the wing tips to get CG ,

I mentioned in a earlier post that the foam is soft , and the wing is easy to warp .

Flying the Swallow 800 ( NX3 gyro is off )

Needed a lot of trim to counter warping ( mild warp ) , but still !
My CG is as close as I can get to recommended , where the motor mounts to the model .
Ailerons are soft , really soft . You want decent length servo arms ( like with a 9g servo ) for more throw .
Elevator is ok , but that soft wing needs Aileron authority . Especially at the low speeds I was flying at .
I really need more aileron , and maybe I have to pull out those small servos and do a 9g transplant .

This thing is draggy ! The 1306 was @ about 1/3 throttle most of the time and it flew slow .
I think properly set up , this wing would be seriously NOOB friendly .
Being so soft how ever , you probably dont want to crash it . But , it's also relatively cheap . Selling under $20 USD for the kit at the moment .
https://www.banggood.com/custlink/DDvG6eoW6q

If I built another ?

Definitely use some 9g servos .
Maybe a larger motor like a 1806 ( Maybe ) and a 5x5x3 prop ( Maybe )

Yep Les Amis,

I'm gonna write this here for two reasons; one is that I feel it is safe for me to write this here on a RCG blog since I don't expect too many people (if any) to see this and two, that means I won't get people fussing at me for having an opinion. But it makes me feel better to get things like this out of my system and if I send this to people I know or put it in our club"s newsletter, I might hurts someones feelings or make someone angry. This way I am pretty much anonymous.

I am not a big fan of SAFE. I keep seeing bad things happen to airplanes when the pilot can't exercise enough control to correct a problem. Yes, I know that one can flip a switch and change the setting, but pretty much new pilots in a panic mode don't think of that - let alone remember where the right switch is. Guys at my club have flown into trees and behind the pits when they can't make a sharp enough turn. The other thing is that when a person "masters" his $300 trainer and advances to a more challenging model that isn't equipped with gyros guess what happens. It just makes you sick to see nice World War II ARFs snap on takeoff.

On a positive note; I love my little UMX ARFs. I think it is a mark of our technological progress that someone figured out how to get gyros in those tiny receiver/servo bricks. And I'm betting that they wouldn't sell near as many without gyros. Heavy sigh.

Finally, has anyone beside me found it hard to find the old "bricks" for little scratch indoor projects?

P.S. I have been an active flyer and AMA member since the mid 70s and the good ole days were great, but today's models and systems are better - although I do miss having a winter building project(s).

Making some progress !
FPV camera has been located , gyro is double sided taped in place .
Servos are in ( but not glued ) ,

Whats needed is the ESC and Rx to be soldered .. Then I can start fine tuning , some gluing and test glides .
Also need a patch lead for the FPV ( power )

Looks like this is going to happen !

As pictured - Weight is 101 grams ...

Removed some old monokote covering from this plan and recovering with Oratex I picked up from Balsa USA. The reasons for removing the old covering, I had some minor wing damage from handling the plane and picking up the wings, and the covering would tighten up any more like it use to. So I decided to just recover the whole plane. I am going back with the same color scheme as was on it going to add some other graphics. I have been researching the internet and looking at RC Decals for ideas. The whole plane is white including the top of the wings the bottom of the wings are yellow on the left and orange on the right wing. The elevator and rudder are going to covered in a yellow and black checkered pattern like the old P-47 that use to be sold by Top Flight .

The body of the plan is 48 inches and the wings are 64 inches and it is a profile plane, I am not sure of the manufacture I did purchase this plane from a gentleman on this site 10 years ago. So when I made the decision to redo the covering it was a tuff one for multiple reasons. 1 I have never recovered a whole plane before, 2 If I [email protected]#$ it up I might lose a plane I really enjoy flying. If anyone reads this and thinks they can ID the plane that would be helpful.

This is my second build with Monokote. My P-51B uses 2 rolls of Olive Drab, 1 roll Gray, and some White. I thought about painting white, but was satisfied with white.

Update: The day after posting this blog, I learned that Monokote makes a FLAT olive drab! Now, I bought not one, but two rolls from my LHS and he mentioned nothing about a flat finish version. And at least online it looks to be a lighter color that what I’m stuck with. Beware your LHS I guess is today’s lesson!

I saw someone recently ask the question, what parts are needed to convert an SCT410.3 into a MT410 and for how much?

Having an SCT410.1 myself, I have been tinkering with the idea of doing the conversion as well, so let's take a look and see what it will take. Note that I have not made the conversion myself, this is just a guess of what I think will be required based on cross referencing parts off the product pages:

$15 - TKR5424 – Turnbuckle (steering links, 2pcs, MT410)
$15 - TKR5194 – Spindle Carriers (trailing, 15 degree, L/R, EB/NB/ET/NT)
$14 - TKR5193 – Spindles (trailing, L/R, requires TKR5194, EB/NB/ET/NT48, EB/NB.3)
$12 - TKR5199 – Rear Hubs (L/R, CV or uni, EB/NB/ET/NT48, EB/NB.3)
$5 - TKR6145 – Shock Boots (for 137mm shocks, 2pcs)
$60 - 2 x TKR5472 – Driveshafts (front/rear, hardened steel, 2pcs, ET48, NT48)
$12 - TKR6061 – Shock Shafts (for 137mm shocks, steel, 2pcs)
$30 - 2 x TKR5451 – Turnbuckle (camber link, front, 2pcs, ET48, NT48)
$30 - TKR6060 – Shock Body (for 137mm shocks, aluminum, hard anodized, 2pcs)
$12 - TKR6081 – Shock Spring Set (rear, 1.6×10.0T, 90mm, green, 4.20 lb/in)
$18 - TKR5436 – Suspension Arms (front, 2pcs, ET48, NT48)
$18 - TKR5430 – Suspension Arms (rear, 2pcs, ET48, NT48)
$30 - TKR5071C – Wheel Hubs (17mm, lightened, aluminum, gun metal ano, 2mm offset, w/pins, 2pcs)
$15 - TKR5116 – Wheel Nuts (17mm, serrated, gun metal anodized, M12x1.0, 4pcs)
$40 - 2 x TKR5070 – Stub Axles (hardened steel, 2pcs)
$12 - TKR5055A – Arm Bushing (aluminum, hard anodized, 4pcs)
$12 - TKR5054A – Spindle Bushings (aluminum, hard anodized, 4pcs)
$35 - TKR5029 – Shock Tower (rear, 7075 CNC, gun metal anodized)
$35 - TKR5028 – Shock Tower (front, 7075 CNC, gun metal anodized)
$14 - TKR40007K – Battery Straps (black, 4-6 cell)

Total = $436

New MT410 Kit = $450

"Dreaming of an Infinite Decaying Reality" - Sam Kolder Transitions Inspired....but on a budget 😊 (3 min 0 sec)

The "Impossible Bando" - Dreamy transitions
Making the most of my 3 inch drone tiny hd camera! Inspired by Sam Kolder's latest drone video (thank you). First time creating Adobe masks with not a lot of flight footage due to the bad weather; 8 lipos/1 location/ 1 long phone call from my mum 😊 Had lots of fun making this and went for a fpv freestyle drone video cinematic feel at 24FPS. Hope to make another video if we get another dry day in the UK this year!

If you think of a better name for this video let me know and I may use it 🙂

Bush league to assemble , glue !
Foam is soft and can warp when gluing in the spars , put it down on a flat surface .

As pictured = Foam bits glued together / no hardware !

Weight is right on the nose of 60 grams .

So the plan still remains to make this FPV ..

Motor will be the 1306 ( This one )

240 + grams of thrust on a 5x3 is plenty overkill . ( 2s )

CG is slightly rearward as is at the moment .. I will wait for the glue to dry and then try locating the CG with some weights before I start bolting on hardware .
