A follow up from this previous blog entry, I've started building the platform which will be my test bed for Inav. A Super Alula made of balsa.

Many years ago I found this blog online and decided that it was one of the most beautiful airplanes ever made imo. https://hbfpnl.wordpress.com/planes/super-alula-fpv/

So I decided to build my own. I found a plan that looks a bit like one here: https://aerofred.com/details.php?image_id=102674 (I'll attach the plan to this post). Enlarged it with the print-to-tile function of Adobe and ended up with 16 A3 sheets taped together.

I've started with strengthening the fuselage and cutting the ribs. How everything will balance out on the CG with all FPV-gear loaded is a complete mystery for now. Its a DLG converted to electric & FPV, so additional strengthening will be needed without adding too much weight.

Motor: 1150KV with a 9x5 prop
ESC: Afro 20A
Battery: to be tested. Somewhere between 4S/1500 3S/2200 or 3S/1300.
Main spar is a 8mm carbon tube 114.5cm / 45 inches long.

*This is a test unit sent by Banggood.

It's a RC 1/12 replica of the real and very cool Ripsaw made in the US which was a family project.

Out of the box, it's a really heavy tank though. Quality of the plastic is great, and there are many details on the body as mentiond in the video below.

Specification,
Scale - 1/12
Control - Proportional 2 channel. FW, BW, Left & Right
Battery - 2S 7.4V 18650 1200mAh
Length - 345mm
Width - 175mm
Height - 142mm
Engine - Unsure. see picture below
*Requires - 3 AA batteries

The first impression driving it was "Man this is so cool so powerful!" Whenever you punch it, it just lift off the front. Speed is fast compare to other RC tank and of course it's not as fast as other RC cars, which it doesn't need to be. This is about conquering all terrain with its higher track surface with the ground.

It's 3.8m full house . I may make considerable changes and make it RES which is what I prefer to fly these days . Here are some pics of the completed prototype . I'll definitely increase the tip dihedral angle , I have a second laser cut short kit but have way too many other planes to complete before I can get back to this bird .

So, I have given the Milan a couple of flights. I have not flown somethiing that big before, and am impressed at how easy it is. The first was in a moderately strong wind, 15 - 20 knots, chosen so that there would be plenty of lift at the slope. The last thing I wanted was to throw it off and have it sink to the bottom (and then land on the rocks). Of course, it was great, climbed away from the launch and handled the wind with ease. The flaps and crow function all work as intended and I was able to fly backward in the strong wind. Some of the trim started to peel off the wing at the edges, so a bit of extra adhesion was added...

The second outing was in a rather lighter wind, again very successful, though I did find the tip stall that others have referred to, with a spin that almost ended on the ground, saved at the last minute more by luck than skill. Now, all I need is someone to shoot a bit of video so I can show you all.

EDF Wing ( No power ) (0 min 44 sec)

This started a long time ago .. 30mm EDF Wing ..
The first 30mm EDF was impressive , enough so to start this project .
Unfortunately the day before the maiden , the motor died .

I could not find a motor for it so replaced the entire unit .. 2nd one was not as powerful as the first .
+ At the time I went DLG , so the project came to a halt ..
Until this morning .
A week or so ago I spotted the wing and remembered , oh yeah - I never played with that !
So now I know , that 30mm just dont cut it .

Oh dear ! Another project to work on . I think I have a smooth running 50mm EDF doing nothing .. So might shoe horn it in there .
Or maybe a 40mm ?
Hmmmmm .................... ( ? )

Update :
50mm is a 55mm EDF , runs smooth .. ( It's a nice EDF ) but way large for this wing !
BG has a alloy EDF ( 40mm ) , so ordered that ! How long to get it ? Way things are , maybe early 2021 ?

Nearly 5 years ago I mounted a CC3D flight controller in a Delta Ray using 2 Pro 180 Extreme motors with brushed ESCs. It was a cheap project that was fun to build and fun to fly. Maybe some day the CC3D will make it back into a DR again using brushless ESC and motors instead.

Flight controllers have progressed a lot over these few years. I've long wanted to use a newer firmware to try building up a DR with some new features going beyond the simple stabilization I tried with the CC3D - and I guess the time to start has finally come.

A post by 747TestPilot kicked off a renewed interest, so I'm hoping we can learn from, and encourage, each other in starting some fun builds. Having never used ArduPlane (or any other version of ArduPilot), I will need to select and order a FC and learn a bit about a new board and the firmware before deciding on all of the other equipment I will use on this build.

I've also long wanted to get a Nano Goblin for a very efficient and light FPV plane, so recycling and using parts mostly from available spares for the DR could be a great way to get some experience with an updated, current flight controller using a new to me firmware. I've also not done a FPV build, so not sure if I will do that later, or add that to the build from the start.

My goal with this blog is simply to document our experience, and hopefully provide examples someone else may find useful with their own build. Participation by others with similar interest are very welcome to ask questions, offer suggestions, and even participate with their own FC builds.

Halloa people

so I've been using the Tango 2 radio for a couple of months by now.. I had intended to do a shorter-term review of it.. But by now I have do sooo manny flights with it.. It has turned out to be a LONG term review

I bought mine here: TBS Tango 2 Pro at Droneshop.nl

I am actually in the process of making several video's about the radio And Crossfire..
But let's first have a quick look at my initial flight impressions

Another well intentioned modeling job ended in a hot glue fiasco. Didn't want to order another battery eliminator & wait 6 weeks for China post, but didn't have any gold contacts either. The way to do it is to solder the contacts on a PC board & model around the PC board rather than try to model the complete wire routing in plastic or just rework an existing battery, as lions did for the 5D.

At least it worked & now every time the camera starts on the battery eliminator, it requires clicking through several screens of menus. At least this battery format was easier to replicate than the laptop battery connector in the T4I.

originally came with a scorpion 221-10, overall it s rather gutless frankly and swapped out for an ALZRC 450 2225 - 3800 kv motor. lots more power but head speed is on the high side on 4S - 3200 + range which the TT tail is not happy with it seems

Lookin at the turnigy SK3 - 2700kv motor and the three blade rotor head, I just really like the way 3 blade birds fly. and also back the head speed down into the 2800 rpm range where everything seems allot happier, and then try the 5 blade head with the semi scale copterX main blades - just to see what its like !

Itís been eons since I have sloped. Actually over two years! This weekend, the wind gods sent us a decent southerlywind, perfect for our local slope. So with no valid excuses I met up with Poh Khaw and Chris Woodward at the dam on Sunday.

It was an excellent early fall day with a decent wind of about 10mph (as predicted). Trees were just starting to show some color. Lots of boaters were out, behind the dam, enjoying probably one of the last warm days on the water.

We went out about 1/3 of the way out on the dam and setup ďcampĒ.
Chris brought his one flyable plane, a Multiplex Easy Glider Pro. Poh brought his Radian and HK Ridge Runner. I brought my FVK Gillette, HL Jerry, Zulu and AH Falco.
Obviously if were counting quantity of planes, then I won.

While Poh and Chris concentrated on catching slermals and riding up and far out. I concentrated on ripping up and down the slope. We garnered quite a bit of attention from families on their Sunday walks across the top of the dam. As you might have imagined.

We flew for over three hours. Or rather we talked and flew for over three hours. Only thing interesting of note was Chris and Poh performing a mid-air, almost right in front of us. Pohís Radian didnít get much damage. But as you can see in the pictures, Chris had his tail cut cleanly off. But a little epoxy and heíll be ready for the next slope trip.

As we packed up, Chris asked us if we like to see some full scale (1:1) stuff. Of course...Continue Reading
