I have always loved the looks of the L-39...and this one came out great!

Running a 4S XRP motor/fan setup with a 40A ESC and 4S 1300 45C LiPo's

Built up from a kit (all surfaces were a bit warped and received CF reinforcements)

She is VERY fast and nimble! May try a 3S powered version on the next one to lighten it up a bit......Continue Reading

Using a stock J-Power motor ChangeSun XRP Fan w/ 30A ESC and running a 3S 1300 45C Lipo.

Built up from kit form with a few mods...pinned AIL and full flying ELEVONS...it is a decent flying model, not fast, but very maneuverable and good slow flight handling. Looks good in the air!

Questions and comments welcome......Continue Reading

A fantastic airframe...the lightest of the bunch and she is fast!

4S 2200 45C, Turnigy Plush 60A ESC, EMax GT2826/04 swinging an APCe 9X9 inside a Great Planes 2 1/2" metal backplate spinner. Beefed up the ELE and Horizontal Stab, glued on the wing and moved battery and battery tie down aft to get CG. ... Also ended up making a ply motor mount as the stock one came pre cracked...they are too weak for this sort of power.

Questions/Comments welcome...

What a fantastic little bird! Thank you Dr. Brett/BBJets...and HK for bringing this little gem to us! Really enjoying the build and can't wait to get her in the air!

I'll add more detail shortly, but wanted to get some pics up for any proud owners that may want some different ideas pictures to assist in the build. Although, I must add that the components and the instructions for this speedy little jet are above and beyond most! A VERY nice product at a VERY low price...I now own a second

Added Equipment:
ZTW 25A Esc
3 Dymond D47s servos
Lemmon 6ch Featherweight Rx
Custom cut Carbon Fiber Options thanks to InvertMast...nice stuff!
Carbon fiber control rods and Du-Bro linkages
3S 1300 45C Lipo

Modifications:
NACA air intake for cooling of ESC
CF rod for Horizontal Stab
ELE Servo attachment
added modded inlet lip to fan...Continue Reading

For under $90...and some mixed reviews, I figured what the heck....let's see if we can make her fly.

Fan needed balancing, added a thrust tube and modified battery bay for 3S 2200mAh lipo. Added servo covers and gave her a few thin coats of Polycrylic.

Some CG adjustments and she flys great, certainly no speed demon and the vertical is short lived, but she looks great moving about the heavens. Added spoiler function to the AIL's and she is so very tame on the landings.

Had this 'used' girl on the shelf for some time... She is all stock (old school) and simply cleaned up and tuned up...removed all of the stickers, added brass supports to the Elevon shafts, cleaned up the intake and re-built the thrust tube to 85% FSA.

Ended up giving it to my flying buddy as a gift...one of his favorite jets to fly and she does it so well!...Continue Reading

Traded a buddy of mine a couple of birds for this gorgeous beast...
I felt like she needed a bit of TLC and a complete going through as she has had many hours of fun in the skies with her last owner...and I wanted to ensure many hours of fun in the skies with me at the controls.

Basically went through everything...stiffened up the elevator and inserted CF rod into the Rudder. Re-hinged one AIL that had been damaged prior. Removed any excess weight, such as tail wheel and steering...
Added servo covers and wing tip protectors. Gave her a thorough touch up on the paint and got her a bit closer to scale look (I left the belly with the original color scheme for visibility). And finished off the painting with three light coats of Polycrylic.
Ended up pulling the old Power 15 and running an EMAX GT2820/04, a HobbyWing 60A ESC, 4S 2200 mAh 45C and turning that little 8x8 eAPC. Screaming fast!

A wonderful flying aircraft...maybe one of the best as far as behavior in the skies.
Purchased just the airframe and added HS-55 servos all round...a Hobbywing 30A esc and a Power Up 480 Plus motor spinning numerous props, but my "go to" prop being the 9x 7.5 APCe prop and 3S 2200mAh lipos...

Had an issue with a cold solder on the motor side bullet connector...after direct soldering all wires, she is a GEM!!

Several things that I wanted to achieve with this build...a more aerodynamic intake and exhaust. A light but powerful set up, a fantastic scale looking bird with excellent flying qualities...

Bare airframe with CS11B fan and shroud, stock JP motor w/ cooling holes drilled in forward motor housing, 30A HW FF ESC, 2 HS-55 servos, all Du-Bro Connectors and CF rod, Callie Graphics...Foam-Tac hinges and modified ducting...

More details to come...

Again...my apologies on lack of details...they will come shortly, just trying to sort through all of my accumulated photos first.

Main goal with this build is to get her somewhat light...but very fast and powered by Don's Wicked Wemo 4800Kv on 4S 1300mAh 45C.

Build includes "Dryer Sheet" glassing of Leading Edges and Scoop due to my foam eating flying field.

Flight Report: AWESOME!!! Took some serious de-tuning to really make her behave at the high speeds, very little movement needed in AIL/ELE at 100 mph :-) Will slow to a crawl...literally launches itself out of your hand. A joy to fly!

DON'S WICKED MOTOR INFO:
Here is the color code for Wicked motors:
Wicked motor (red bell):
4000KV yellow dot
4800 KV green dot
5400 KV red dot
6000 KV orange dot

Wicked Plus motors (blue bell)
4000 KV yellow dot
4400 KV green dot

The paint dot is located on the black heat shrink coming from the side of the motor. ESC timing should be set to "low" on Hobbywing FlyFun ESC which work great with the Wicked motor series all KV values. Any other info you may want ask now before it is lost from my memory :-)

My goal was light...powerful...and to be able to easily carry a 3S 1300mAh 45C Lipo.
It worked...really well!!

For the 3S 1300 45C to fit (CG ) I moved the battery bay aft. Had to remove a bit of material on the bottom and made grooves for wires to go forward of the battery (Sat and LiPo feed). I did do a quick layer of "dryer sheet and CA to be bottom of the battery bay.

The Rx is mounted in the fuse aft of the battery. I cut a square out of the top of the fuselage to assist in placement and wiring (Silicon fastened). I did take the plastic plugs off of the servo wires and used heat shrink to protect each wire (Had to give the wires a slight bend to fit in the area(didn't have a slim Rx with plugs on the side...).

Intake was sanded smooth and exhaust received a thrust tube (95% FSA for the CS11B fan/shroud, and a J-Power stock motor).

I set up the AIL's to have minimal throw( This thing spins like a drill) and CG is at the stock position.

I used Foam-Tac for ALL joints and did add some short pieces of CF rod to both the wings and tail (not really needed for this light bird).

More details to come...

Fight Report: Next to the Screamer...this is one of my favorites. Fast, slow, well behaved and CRAZY maneuverable. Best 2:30 minutes of flying.

Been a bit slow getting some of the details up as I was doing a lot of experimenting and sourcing of parts...but working towards a 5 blade main and a 4 blade cascading tail (rotating on the left side for more scale appearance), full lighting and the best part...easy instal and removal of the frame from the fuselage for any repairs/adjustments...more to come.

UPDATE: Lovin' this build, but ready for it to be DONE!! Almost there.

UPDATE 4/24/14: AWESOME!!! All systems go! Blades custom painted/balanced/tracked...re-zeroed swash and checked all control systems. Got rid of a small bind in max extent of tail pitch slider...tail is ROCK solid and sounds so good! Was getting frustrated with it, but so glad I kept pushing

I have some video that was shot early in the fine tuning of the frame...need a camera person for final footage in the fuselage w/ lights. The sound and smoothness of flight are fantastic...and handles the wind very well.

Here is the initial test flight footage...
MD500D Test (3 min 31 sec)

Running two 2200 3S 40C's in parallel...solid 4:30 minutes and packs are at 60%. I do notice a slight drop in "umph" at about 4:00 ...but it is a heavy bird.
