Wrapping Up 2013

My goodness! With the recording of this 241st show, TheCrashCast has been attempting to bring you guys news, tips, and information on the RC hobby for five years now! We've averaged just over 48 shows per year, too, which certainly isn't too bad for a non-paying gig. LoL

In this recording, we reminisce a bit about this last year and briefly discuss some goals for the next year (more fixed-wing!!). We also take the opportunity to give a little back to some of the people that have offered up some financial support for the next year's expenses. The OPQ package was won by Tom E., The MiniBipe package was won by Kevin W., The DX7s and FliteLab Hockey Jersey went to Darin C., The Helimax Axe 100CP Demo unit donated by Cathead went to Greg O., and West Michigan Parkflyers jumped in at the last minute and allowed us to give away one of their airframes to Michael B.!

With this recording in the can, so to speak, we will be stepping away from the mics for a couple of weeks to enjoy the holidays with our families, but no worries - we will be back to kick off our 6th season with another LIVE-streamed show on Wednesday evening, January 8th, at 7pm CST.

Merry CHRISTmas to all of you, and may you all have the Happiest Of New Years!!

Cox Engines

In this 240th installment of our show, we get an opportunity to visit with Bernd from Cox International! While they've almost been forgotten with the onset of Electrics, Cox engines are what started off so many of us in this great modeling hobby. Bernd tells us about the inventory he has, which seems to be rather plentiful, so you guys needing parts to repair your beloved Cox stuff needn't worry a bit! In fact, you can even snag up some of these original beauties and enjoy a Cox yourself, if you've never had the experience!

This week we debuted a new site for streaming our LIVE show each week, and I have to say that I am quite pleased with the results! If you can get away next Wednesday evening at 7pm Central Standard Time, stop by our NEW SITE for our stream and check us out!

News, Weather, and Sports

This week we had planned a special guest for our 239th show but it seemed that, for the second week in a row, the service we have been using to stream the show just failed to work. We rescheduled the guest for next week and then, on the fly, started trying out other live-stream solutions. Well, in a matter of minutes we had something that worked, so the result is this very unprepared-for show. LoL

I will be testing extensively the new streaming solutions I have found over the next few days and when I find something that will work for us, I'll post the link to the site on Facebook and Twitter so you guys will know how to find us next week.

What Does The Swede Say?

After a short delay due to technical difficulties beyond our control, we finally got our 238th installment of the show off and running. This week we are without Karl, but we pick up David Windestål from FliteTest! We had a great time visiting with our favorite Swede and talked about all kinds of stuff RC and, well, OTHER stuff, too! LoL

A couple of reminders:

1. If you haven't already done so, be sure to check out our "Sponsor Gift Program" over at AllThingsCrash. It a great way to support our show, as well as have an opportunity to get one of three cool gifts!

2. If you've been wanting to snag one of my "OPQ" Frames, you can get it from ReadyToFlyQuads, as Witespy has exclusive distribution rights to this great Quadcopter Frame. When you're there, be sure to pick up everything else you need for this project all from one convenient website!

Clubs, Fields, PIDs

In this 237th installment, we share our week of fun, answer a few questions, and get into a little discussion regarding clubs, flying sites, and PIDs. Also, we've added an additional item to our "Sponsor Gift Program", so you'll want to check this out, for certain.

A quick announcement for all of those that have been inquiring about the OPQ frames I manufacture: I have been distributing all of my frames through ReadyToFlyQuads. This is the best way to go, since they already sell all of the other gear we recommend for outfitting this great little frame!

All About FPV

In this 236th installment of our show, we are all in the workshop and even have a special guest to help us do our best to cover just about everything FPV that we can think of. We welcomed long-time listener and personal friend, Korey Balint (Shadow102) to the show and he helped us to fill in some of the gaps with this fast growing segment of the RC Hobby (both fixed wing and multi-rotor).

I preface the show with some bad news regarding the quality of this episode, so I won't rehash it again in here, but please understand that this issue is just as frustrating on our end as it is yours. We are all cursing Microsoft today (Skype was a great tool until MS got their grubby mitts on it!).

Nothing But Problems

The reason for the name of this particular show is totally related to the "technical difficulties" experienced with the internet, Talkshoe, and Skype. No worries, though, as after about 4 hours of editing magic, this 235th show is actually quite listenable. LoL

This week, we have a friend and long time listener of the show on! Tom "Damage" Minnick had an opportunity to attend the DC Drone Users Conference and he tells us about some of the cool things he was able to take away from this meeting. Thanks go out to Tom for hanging in there with me to finish this recording, as well as our LIVE listeners that stuck it out (but to no avail). Hopefully we can get things sorted out so this type of thing doesn't happen to us again.

Ask Witespy

In this 234th installment we cover a surprising amount of ground! There's a bit of news, some info on how you can support our show AND get a chance to get "gifted" some cool goodies, we get to hear Karl's second part of the interviews he did while traveling abroad, and we debut a new segment called "Ask Witespy" where we bring on our Multi-Rotor Guru to field questions regarding the newest facet of our hobby that is totally sweeping the nation!

Indian Summer And HHAEFI

Our 233rd installment of our show sees us all back in the workshop and streaming LIVE! Join us as we reminisce about Karl's trip to the Indian Summer Jamboree in Washington State and Crash, Tim, and Nav's trip to HHAEFI. Trust me - LOTS of fun was had!

Also, buried in this episode is an announcement worth repeating here again. West Michigan ParkFlyers has a neat giveaway slated for Halloween. The basics are that on October 31st, open your browser and hit up WMParkflyers. SOMEWHERE on the site there will be a PUMPKIN hiding out. If you're the first one to find it, CLICK ON IT! One lucky person will have the opportunity to purchase one of WMP's fine kits for only ONE CENT plus standard $7 shipping. SWEET!!

A very special THANK YOU goes out to all of the friends of TheCrashCast Crew for making us all feel so welcome at Indian Summer and HHAEFI! Dougbo and Hance (as well as many others) accepted and entertained Karl, and deserve a pat on the back for dealing with "that guy from Canadia".

Thanks to PCPhil for sharing his camper, "jar", and coffee with us. Phil is a stand-up guy and one that I am so happy to call my friend. Thanks to Cathead Biscuit, HatefulGravy, and Brent for all the laughs. Thanks so much to Shadow102 for sharing his PREMO FPV Quad and sharing his knowledge in FPV with us! Also, thanks go out to AlanFlorida for the "Unicorn Love" shown. LoL And, finally, thanks to the Stahr family and NavionFlyer for the "unusual" birthday presents.

Oh, I almost forgot! Thanks go to my buddy, Bildo Baggins, for sharing his infinite wisdom, unique humor, and great video skills! No event in GA is complete without the clown!

A Radical Start...

In this 231st installment, we get to visit with an old friend - Radical Dave from RadicalRC! Dave is finally getting to cool his heels a bit, as the grueling show season has come to a close for him, and we take an opportunity to do a little catching up with him.

Some quick notes as to our personaly schedules: Karl will be traveling south to meet up with Dougbo and Hance in Reichland, WA, this weekend (Oct. 11-13th) for the Indian Summer Jamboree, so if you're in the area, drop by and say HEY! Also, it's looking like Tim, Navionflyer, and I will be attending HHAEFI October 17-19th, so again, if you're in the area, stop by and say HEY!

Some MassiveRC!

In this 230th installment of our little show, we have the opportunity to visit with a gentleman that has offered many of us the "gateway drug" to Multi-Rotors - Romeo (aka MassiveOverkill) from MassiveRC! You may recall that quite some time ago, we got turned on to a little quadcopter (thanks to Hance letting us in on it) called the V202 Scorpion. That little quad (complete package RTF for about $50) proved to be so much fun and so much bang for the buck that we ALL had to get one! LoL I think you guys will enjoy the story of how Romeo started it all with online sales and how he's been able to transform a bunch of "toy grade" flying thingies into a true hobby grade experience! I shudder to think how many folks are now out there flying Quads, thanks to the inexpensive start into the hobby, thanks to MassiveRC!

Also, we gave away a couple more Power Distribution Boards (courtesy of ReadyToFlyQuads) during this show and our lucky winners were Nick K. and MadMarl! These little boards are a MUST if you're building a multi, as they make putting together a wiring harness SO EASY!

HHAEFI 2013

In our 229th installment, we have a special guest! Chris Scoggins, the Contest Director for the Hodges Hobbies All Electric Fly-In pops on to share with us a little about HHAEFI and how the event is shaping up. Three of your CrashCast hosts are planning to attend this event, so if you're in the area October 17-19th, plan to drop by and enjoy the RC goodness! Akso in this episode, we give away a couple of Power Distro Boards courtesy of our friend Witespy over at ReadyToFlyQuads. The lucky recipients were Damage and MassiveOverkill.

NEAT 13

In this 228th installment, we talk about upcoming events and Coreman drops in to share his experience at the NEAT Fair this year. Also, our friend sawatt shared pictures that he took while there, so you'll want to check them out (thanks, Steve!). A lot of folks made it to this one this year, and from what I've been told, this event is the "SEFF" of the Northeast! This event just has to make it on my bucket list. LoL

Unicycle Tassels?

In our 227th show, we share what we've been up to, some interesting new stuff that's coming out, some videos, and moving (MOVING?). There's also a little update on the OPQ project, too.

Hey, do you remember how the SlowBipe plane kind of disappeared? Well, I am happy to announce that it is coming back in kit form! If you've been wanting to get your hands on one of these, you'll have a chance very soon!

Oh, and my hopes for getting through this show without any unicorn references were quickly dashed early on in this one (gee thanks, Tim). LoL

The first production run of OPQ (One Piece Quad) Frames are rolling off the machine at a rate of 8 per hour! I should be able to get them all produced this weekend and get them in the mail on Monday for the folks that got in line.

For more information about this project, check out the last few episodes of the podcast!

If you think you may be interested in getting your hands on one of these practically INDESTRUCTIBLE airframes, listen to one of the latest shows and email me at the address I include in every show. Just remember to put "OPQ" in the subject line so it doesn't go to my SPAM folder.

These sporty little frames weigh 6 oz and are "dimpled" with reference marks for mounting your 45mm spaced boards. They also include motor slots for mounting your favorite motor. The landing gear are made simply by screwing in a 1/4-20 nylon bolt into pre-threaded holes on each boom and securing it with a nylon jam-nut (not supplied). This frame has 346mm spacing, making it just right for 8 and 9" props.

My favorite gear for this is the Flip Standard motors or the new Red motors over at ReadyToFlyQuads.com., 9" Gemfan props, either the 16 amp or 20 amp ESC's (the 20 amp ones allow you to use a 4s battery and 8" props), the power distribution board (those dimples are made for that distro board), and the FLIP 1.5 MWC in the new protective case. This gear with a light 3s1300 battery makes this little thing BALLISTIC!

With this frame, it's easy to...Continue Reading

SOMF Wrap-Up

In this 226th installment of our show, we finally get to do a wrap-up of this Summer's main focus - Summer Of Multi-Rotors And FPV. I think it's safe to say that our focus on this one special interest has really hooked all of us and we will, no doubt, have some discussions each week on the subject from here on.

I would especially like to shout out a special THANK YOU to Witespy over at ReadyToFlyQuads. His great products, sage advice, and patient customer support has certainly been the key to all of our mutual successes. If you are looking to get in on the fun, whether you want to do the DIY thing with putting together your own Quad or buy a great-priced turn-key solution, RTFQ should be your FIRST stop!

We've also like to thank Romeo over at MassiveRC. He has pretty much redefined the phrase "gateway drug", as his inexpensive wares have helped to transform "toy grade" products into a true "hobby grade" experience. If you want to try the quad thing out but you're not ready to drop $150+, then you certainly want to consider getting one of his quads. He removes the worries of "Is this a good one to buy?", because if it's on his site, it's going to be a good purchase.

Overall, this little excerise has proved rewarding for all of us and maybe next Summer we will entertain focusing on another single facet of our great RC Hobby.

Quadicle Nuts

We started off this week's show (225th!) with the intention of wrapping up our "Summer Of Multis/FPV", but as we usually do, we got sidetracked. LoL What you'll get in this one is some great RCA&E event coverage by Tim, some "OPQ" Beta Test results by me, Tim, and Ron (YES! Ron got a chance to pop in this week!), as well as a mess of our other usual goofiness.

It is our intention next week to conclude the Multi/FPV discussion and attempt to recap all that we've learned this summer. As I mention in the show, we plan to make the Multi-Rotor and FPV discussion a weekly part of our discussions, since we ALL have become smitten by this fast-moving part of the RC Hobby. We will be bringing back the fixed wing and helicopter discussions, though, so you guys that have been missing this content won't feel left out.

As far as the "OPQ" (One Piece Quad frame) project goes, I expect to have 40 units in production next week, so if you are one of the folks wanting to get your hands on one, they should be ready to start shipping next week. You'll want to watch our alternate site (AllThingsCrash) and our FACEBOOK FAN PAGE for details on how you can get your hands on one. From the interest that I've received thus far, the initial 40 units will probably be sold out within the first day I open the sales. No worries, though, as I plan to get another order of raw materials started immediately after we sell out the first run.
