I'm designing a Gaui X3 for RealFlight. Here's what I have done so far.

Anthony Donzella helped me get started, and we used TeamViewer so he could see my screen and control my computer if I needed help.

Ok, so the flight in 29 degrees went well. This thing is AMAZING.

Turning the cyclic pots down to 10 o'clock on the 3GX did the trick, no more cyclic wobbles, just crisp easy movements. This thing is SO stable!

However I do still need to sort out the tail wag, it even wags at 60% and a pitch pump really gets it wagging.

By the end of the flight my fingers were so cold I felt like I wasn't even touching the transmitter stick and it was hard to move my thumbs. I was scared to land since if I messed up and accidentally moved the cyclic stick back, the tail could hit the ground and strip a gear! I ended up just going a bit forward and landing with throttle hold on the street rather than try to land in the grass/snow-covered sidewalk.

Definitely a winner! Even with that 'crappy' Align 3GX

Finally took her up while on vacation to Texas. It's a bit warmer there (65 degrees vs. 9 degrees with wind chills of less than -20 degrees...) so I figured I'd take her. The maiden was by a lake. It was a very short maiden, only a few seconds to make sure she actually flew. The real maiden was at a park. I have a video coming soon.

It flies great! There are some cyclic wobbles from high cyclic gain and a bit of tail gain, but those are issues that will be tuned out over time. The motor does get pretty darn hot, but I'm not surprised. It's not the X3's fault...

Pulse 2250 65C pack comes down cold to the touch. I'm glad. That means it won't be puffing for a while because if it does it won't fit in the heli

It's also pretty quiet in terms of drive train. However, my motor bearings suck so that alone makes it super loud. The motor is also out of balance. I will be replacing it soon.

Definitely glad I got the X3. It flies just as good as everyone said it would!

Just finished her yesterday, I started building it at 9:00AM when I found it under the Christmas tree, and finished around 11:00 PM. Over 12 hours of straight building! It's sad, I know but I have nothing better to do.

I think the wiring looks great, and it better because I spent 30 minutes doing it!

Nice looking head! Much more stout than my old 450

Great tail too!

Man, my LHS had a REALLY big sale. I didn't know about the sale until now...

130X = $170

My 450 is FBL... but without a FBL unit! I haven't flown it much in this configuration yet (only skidded along the ground) but it is VERY responsive. I am looking to get an Align 3GX (cheapest yet decent enough, used) in a trade, soon, so I don't have to risk crashing due to flying NOBAR (no FBL unit)

I built myself a twin tail motor setup for my mCP X. I used a 7mm and a 6mm motor because it's all I had laying around. Got it soldered up yesterday.

Went outside again for another test flight with the twin tail setup, the tail is simply rock solid! I did use a V-Curve to add pre-compensation because it would kick out a little (not blow out, just a little kick) and now with the V-Curve it's simply solid! I have always wondered what it's like to have a mCP X with a solid tail... well, now I know I can't wait until tomorrow when there's light and I can test it in 3D

Green blades because they were the only pair that was balanced...

Custom tail. Soldered tail wires to a 7mm motor that came from a Xtreme Turbo Tail for Nano CPx. It was a total PITA to solder those teeny tiny wires but I got it done and it works great, especially compared to the stock tail.

I am hoping for a Gaui X3 and a set of KST DS215MG servos for Christmas Only $300. I already have a motor, ESC, and tail servo, and a kit and cyclic servos are all I need for the X3. Well, and some decent batteries...

Got out to the field again today just before dark. Did some 3D, not my best 3D because I'm still getting it tuned in and getting a feel for it. And it was also getting dark.

You know what I learned today?

Even the best tail setup can't counteract 20 degrees of collective pitch

Some way, somehow, the collective on my 450 got totally jacked up so that there was almost 20 degrees of positive and like 2 degrees of negative pitch... this was the cause of my tail kick. After fixing it back so that it has 10 degrees both ways, the tail is rock solid once again

This servo is already insane on 5v... so what happens when you put a 2s LiPo to it? Well, you reduce transit time from 0.07s to 0.045s and increase torque from 2.5Kg to over 4Kg. The motor still stays cold to the touch!
