This was during my third session in the swiss winter F3J league in 2006. Those contests were in ice-cold conditions, yet we found thermals! -

2009, just before I left to US. I managed to sneak on the podium in the swiss slope nationals. This contest format required to fly triangles in the swiss mountains. The two other gentlemen are Andreas and Paul Boehlen, two of my greatest rc-soaring heroes -

This is a group picture of the second international F3K contest I attended in 2007 in Bregenz. Those planes where heavy back then.. -

This was just before the fly offs at the first F3K world championship in Arboga. The wig was a lost bet ("Whoever makes it into the fly offs has to wear it."). In front is Martin Herrig, who flew a perfect prelim (all 1000s). Superb pilot. -

I had the honor to team up with David Klein, Joe Wurts, Mike Stern, Mike Seid and Austin Sloan at the Bruce. All are fantastic pilots and it was a treat to fly with them. Never laughed so much as flying with Joe there. -

Qualifying for the US F3K team was dream come true for me. That I ultimately could not go has made me sad, but I am honored that I was for some months on the team of such fine pilots (even though I could not contribute at the big show). -

Fond memories, 2010 in Cal Valley for an F3B contest. I managed to get my first 13s speed run and overall the most fun F3B contest I have ever attended. It was here where I could once fly F3B with Joe Wurts and Daryl Perkins, legends of the game. -

Still one of the most fun contests, the first Gator F3B contest. There was also the penultimate Space Shuttle launch on the same weekend. Some years later, a new world record in the speed discipline of F3B was flown on the spacecoast! It still stands

Model hanging on two strings, carefully balanced around the CG. This system is now a harmonic oscillator along the model's yaw axis. To excite it, the model is rotated by pi/2 along the yaw axis and then released. -

Figure 1: Enable all servo throw. The servo should now move about + - 50 degrees from endpoint to endpoint. -

Figure 3: Using the transmitter, bring servo to the end point that corresponds to full up. Adjust and hook up linkage to servo and aileron, while the aileron is fixed as shown in Figure 2. -

Figure 4: If you bring the aileron servo to neutral on the transmitter (0 trim position), the flaps are already partially down-deflected. This is the geometric middle of the total flap travel. Landing flap will be ~three times more down deflection. -

Figure 5: Use the trim menu to adjust the camber of the flaps. It takes about 30% to bring the flaperons to 0 degree camber in this example. On Futaba Trim Mix is a good menu to do that. -

I use a tall elevator horn for best resolution. -

I usually glue a small tube on the horn before install. The tube will accept the torque-spring later. -

The elevator control horn is nicely covered by the elevator pylon. I have added some additional uni-tow on the tail. -

Servo install. Note the small horns on the elevator and rudder servo. Just enough to get the necessary deflection with maximum mechanical advantage. The Flaperon servo horns appear tall, but they are still 1.5 times smaller than the horns on the flaps!
