So I have run glow engines for many years but only recently began to acquire and learn how to operate the compression ignition engines. So as my interest grew I began to understand why I never had these engines, FUEL. No just because the compression ignition engine is also referred to as a diesel, that does not mean that you can use fuel from a gas station.

Typically diesel airplane fuel consists of the following ingredients, ether, kerosene, and castor oil. Often times a cetane booster is also used. Those readers that live in the US know that obtaining ether is nearly impossible do to federal laws. There are very few other sources for pre-mised diesel airplane fuel, Davis Diesel sold exclusively through Tower Hobbies and Dr. Diesel,

Well Tower is currently waiting on a resupply of Davis Diesel fuel. I have read and contacted several members on this forum that are much more expert than I am in these engines and specifically mixing diesel fuel. Well seeing as my interest in these engines is growing and possibly only a passing thing, I did not want to make a huge investment in materials to make fuel. So here is what I did.

I went to O'Reilly auto parts and picked up a small 7 or 8oz can of Johnsen's premium starter fluid. The can says that it is 50% ether and the SDS sheet seems to confirm this. Now John Deere makes an 80% ether starting fluid but ordering a single can of that costs 3 times as much just for the shipping. Seeing as the auto parts store is a short walk from my work, I just picked this up.

In a graduated container I sprayed the entire contents of the starter fluid into it with a partially open lid to allow the propellant to escape. I was left with 6oz of LIQUID with a large percentage of this being ether. I next mixed 6 oz and Klotz castor oil and 6 oz of 1-K kerosene from Lowes.
