My last post began this story. This post just shows the story in the form of videos, 17 in all thus far. From my first look at it all the way through to the final issue I am having getting it to run perfectly.

For those BLOG readers that do not necessarily read the glow engine thread forums, here is a synopsis and videos of this engine. A short time ago I posted about 120 size 4 stroke engines from the early 80's. Those being from Saito, Enya, and OS. Well I received a couple of comments to that regarding the fact that I was missing a key player from that group, the YS F-120.

Quite honestly I did miss that. In fact I never even considered the YS F-120. I had never owned a YS engine before and honestly I was not sure when the F-120 was released. As it turns out an incredible fellow, Jim, has three of the these vintage engines that he acquired from another source. These engines had been stored in a hot humid Houston shed for many years untouched. Jim, being the awesome man he is, sent me one of these engines to clean up and get in running order. I gladly accepted and began the task.

Now YS engines are a different breed of glow engine. More complex than any other 4 stroke engine of the group I mentioned. I had some research and homework to do. Now I quickly found that documentation of these engines is somewhat difficult to find and limited to a few documents. Why this is in unknown since these engines are still in production. Well not the F-120, but the brand. I could not even find the proper instruction manual for this engine.

Are you looking to get into the rapidly declining glow engine market? What the heck sort of question is that? Why would I want to get into a dying aspect of the hobby? Well the last two are valid questions. I am a glow engine fanatic and always will be. Yes I have tried to electric stuff but it really just didn't do anything for me. The gas/glow engine sector of this hobby is the foundation of RC powered flight. Unfortunately most new entrants to the hobby are quickly sucked up into the electric scene and seldom get the appreciation for the glow powered arena, and this is truly sad. Fortunately I have seen that change at the flying field I fly at. It was a 85% electric site several years ago and now they have an entire pit section for glow power only! That is really huge in my eyes.

Believe it or not glow engines maybe on the decline but there are millions of glow engines NIB, lightly used, and heavily used available on the market. These are also available for a fraction of the cost of buying them retail. Now do not get me wrong I am NOT bashing buying retail at all. Without retail sales the market would be doomed much faster. On the other hand if you are curious about a glow engine, very high quality and inexpensive engines are available for you to 'stick your toes in the water' with. Nearly 99% of the engines I buy are from RCGroups, eBay, or the 'other' big US RC forum. I have bought my share of retail NIB(New In Box) engines from 1988 - 2001 so don't...Continue Reading

So I took a chance on this engine from a RCG member who has a bit of a reputation. I paid a bit more than I should have in hindsight, but that is water under the bridge now. It is a decent low time engine that had been exposed to the FL elements resulting in a less than spectacular external appearance. I did my usual, inspection, disassembly, and refurbishment. All it needed was some new bearings. This is also the only 4 stroke engine that I have bought and run that is still in production. Well, let me think.... some of the Enya's I have bought might still be in production so scratch that. Either way it is the latest version 4 stroke from OS that I have had in many years. I did not get a box with it and unsure of the actual country of origin. That really only matters in terms of longevity. The quality of this engine looks to be quite good. I have made several videos covering this engine, but the one posted here is of the first run after rebuild. Check out my YouTube channel for the other videos.
