Sol's fuse is now all sheeted and shaped, where the Vee tail and canopy fit all the exposed end grain has been covered with 1mm ply. The Vee tail wing blot was used to hold a piece of balsa in place whilst the shaping was taking place. Now it will be removed and trimmed to fit the Vee and adjacent fuse surfaces. Both under wing fairings are also complete with Sol's being mainly preformed and the Fourn's was made from scraps

This is what I came up with to keep the lead ballast where it should be.......in the ballast tube and not the fuse! It's similar to a shoot bolt or for your more 'gun ho' type a rifle loading mechanism. The elastic band keeps the latch securely closed

A left over bit of carbon tiller extension, I snapped quite a few during my A Class and F16 Catamaran racing days and a ballast tube for Solange is born. Sealed, grooved, cut out and fixed.
Result = SEXY

A 59" built up wing doesn't take too long. I added a little extra reinforcement at the root by means of a solid balsa block in the root spar web and a strip of spruce behing the leading edge. No point going overboard as you're only moving the weakest link from one place to another

These wings have had approx 12 maidens, this one lasted almost 12mins, cost 12 to build and ended up in 12 pieces

Here's my take on the Fox conversion.
The weather was absolutely miserable this evening so I took the Multiplex 500mmm chuck glider into the workshop for a make over, weight prior to the RC conversion was 46 grams
The wing was cut into three pieces and the center reinstalled into the fuse. The servo aperture's were formed using my trusty small black and decker router. The 1/2 size AAA 4.8V battery pack was positioned more or less on the CoG and routered into the fuse belly. The RX has been positioned under the canopy, leaving as much of the canopy retaining block as possible. A hot metal rod was used to form the cable tunnels running from the servo's and batteries towards the RX, the canopy fixing block has been recessed to take the slack in the cables and also weakens the clip together fuse and canopy which is extremely difficult to release in it's original state. A near full length carbon wing joiner has been inserted into the wings with a small metal tube being installed in the fuse and 35mm of each wing root....Continue Reading

So I'm building two kits simultaneously, it makes sense really as there is always something to do whilst the glue is drying on one model or waiting for parts etc. As long as you are careful & don't mix the kit bits it's very rewarding and probably saves on overall building time which eats into flying time.
I'll be building a 59" stand off scale Fournier RF4 and a 72" Solange Vee tailed soarer. Below is a picture of the fuse sides.

Last week I had a bit of a mad moment and rather carelessly tried to fly two of my balsa crunchies in 40mph winds. Needless to say yesterday I spent a couple of hours carrying out the subsequent repairs! Now I have only one glider which is out of commission whilst I beef up the fuse with an additional layer of fiber glass and resin. It's the P15 which was originally a JP Pretty 1500 electric glider. It slopes well and is a good looking model for under 100. However, the fuse is like an egg shell and probably not ideal for the sort of heavy landings I often perform.
So now that the building board is more or less vacant it's time to start the Solange, last week I bought in bulk! 10 Hitec 55 servo's which worked out at 7.25 ea and the Oracover film. Problem is I didn't buy enough servo's, four will be used in the Solange, four in the Fournier RF4 and two in the Multiplex Fox that doesn't leave any spare for the Topaz.
Notice I mentioned a Fournier. A good friend of mine went off to a show recently and saw this model for sale (half RRP). Without asking me via text etc he purchased it hoping that I would appreciate it and more importantly pay him back for it. Well I was delighted not only because I enjoy building, was looking for a powered glider but because it came as a complete surprise. This just shows what good friendships are about.
So now I can build both the Fournier and Solange in tandem which I enjoy as there's always something which needs doing whilst the glue is setting.
The Fox is just an EPP toy which I'll add pitcheron controls to and just use and abuse when the winds are light. Its also a perfect size to put in the car when we go out
