New hybrid drones are being designed here at the sandwichaero laboratories, smaller and cheaper than our actual 2000W hybrid drone.

next model is going to use 15" propellers and a 1000W generator, a configuration which will provide 5 hours of flight time with a light payload (up to 500g) and more than 2 hours with a medium payload (up to 2kg).

This was one of the tests on our heavy drone (14+ kg).

We plan to sell the generator separately and also a complete hybrid drone system with a 4 kg payload capability with 2+ hours of flight time.

The generator specs are

weight: 3.6 kg

compatibility: compatible with any aircraft with a power consumption of less 2000W, the support mount can be customized depending on the needings of the customer.

Voltage: 12s (can be modified on request)

specific fuel consumption: 1L kW/h

dimensions: 20 x 30 x 40 cm

The generator is hybrid, this means that even in case of generator failure the drone will still fly.

The generator vibrations are suppressed before they can affect the frame.

Fuel: gas-oil mix at 1/30 ratio

This is our new concept for a long-range fixed-wing UAV. 

The benefits of having a long-range UAV in search and rescue operations as well as in urgent transportation of blood and medicines are astonishing in terms of costs and effectiveness.

Surveillance operations and mapping are also two sectors where a similar air vehicle is essential for an efficient and fast survey.

From aerodynamic simulation: Speed range 20-30 m/s

                                                 Range: 600km (depending on payload and wind, using NCR batteries)

                                                 Power consumption 22 - 40W

                                                 High stability.

Wingspan is 1.8m, making this drone easy to transport with any vehicle. 

We work to take into the market something that may improve the services also in developing countries with big land fields and under-developed street networks.

We finally have our hybrid UAV, the HY1000

An internal combustion engine consumes gasoline and spins a generator to ensure a 22V output. Besides this, a 6S lipo battery package is also installed onboard to offer emergency back-up power for quick climbing and quick maneuvering.

With 1kg payload, the flight time is more than 3 hours, and with 3kg payload like a high-end camera, the flight time will be still more than 1 hour.

This is our new generator, designed for medium payload drones, his weight is 1.5 kg, with a power output of 1300 watts.

There are an integrated cooling system and an automatic starter built in, it also has an anti-vibration plate.

The fuel consumption is quite low (600g/h) and the generator is capable of generating up to 50 volts.

We are actually making a startup around this project, soon we are also planning to develop a UAV with an integrated super-efficient hybrid generator, it will be made for really heavy payloads and missions with an endurance greater than 7 hours, the targets are SAR missions and drugs transportation.

Sandwich Cargo Drone Project (hybrid propulsion system) (3 min 35 sec)

After a few months of work, the first prototype is ready. In the video, we show some moments of construction and testing.

The propulsion system worked better than we expected, now we are focusing on a new generator that will allow staying in the air with 150 grams of fuel per hour (that's awesome if you think the weight at take-off is 5 kg).

The new frame will have a diagonal of one meter, so we will be able to use new motors with a thrust capability of 30 kg.

We saw that the market is really interested in the type of aircraft we are developing, that give us great expectations for the commercialization stage.

Let's start with the generator on the prototype

This is the prototype, the generator is only for demonstration purpose because the generator at the moment is made from a nitro engine with all the connected problems (vibration and fuel consumption). A good thing is that I can add 4 kg of payload and still fly with this configuration, but without the main part of the generator (the gas engine) this is only an oversized piece of carbon fiber and wood so I made a project with a Turnigy 26 cc gas engine (3 hp) and a sensored brushless for the starting and converting the kinetic energy to a three-phase current that will be rectified with a diode bridge. this weekend I will make some flight tests with the prototype and some videos.

The final new is that I'm going on Kickstarter. Why I'm doing this? simple, I have to pay for the flight school and I really don't know how to get the money for the generator (I also need a px4 system with gps and telemetry). I'm working on a heavy lift cargo drone, that means I need a total thrust that is more than 8 kg (my current total thrust). I will take four SUNNYSKY XS4112S 340KV outrunner brushless motors. In this month I've worked on my generator, it is composed of a brushless motor, a glow one and a diode bridge rectifier, as you can see in picture

It was able to generate at max throttle about 1.2 kW , starting the motor is difficult, I don't love glow engines (I only figured it now ahah) but the point is that my generator works and with some modifications to reduces vibrations can be mounted on a drone.

What I want to do now is to use a gas motor to generate the energy because glow engines consume a lot more fuel (I will be able to generate 1 kW/h with 0.30 L ).

I have also made a new frame to sustain a bigger cargo system (and the generator)

I don't have enough money to buy the gas engine and also upgrade my old APM system to a new pixhawk one so I'm selling my laptop (I'm a student, and have also to pay the flight school)

But I'm trying, the numbers are good 1kW is enough to sustain my configuration with 2KG of cargo weight.
