The FT Seaduck has had an amazing journey. Built a few years ago from a Flitetest speed build kit. Once assembled I made my way out to our airfield to do a maiden flight. I was super excited to fly it but at the same time I was also battling a sinus infection and I had forgot my camera. It wouldn't have been a good filmed flight anyways due to me hacking and coughing every 2 seconds. The actual maiden went well though. And it seems after that everything happened. Wife was pregnant, hospital visits, baby was born (early), more hospital visits...well you know how those things go. And with all this, the plane has pretty much sat untouched.

So once things started to slow down a little bit, I teamed up with my father-in-law to get the Seaduck back out and add some color. Paintjob turned out pretty good and now here we are finally getting the plane some more airtime and filmed this time. Below is the "sort of" maiden (2nd flight). Had a bumpy landing, but the rest of the flight was pretty good.

Seems like as soon as I get something worked out with the FT Simple Cub, I run into another issue. Makes me think the plane is cursed!

Well after the bent motor shaft issue, I got the motor replaced and fixed anything else that needed fixed, I gave the FT Simple Cub another shot. What I got was a pretty successful flight that ended early in a gentle glide back down to Earth. You can see what happened in the video.

FT Simple Cub Flight (3 channel)...I think this plane is cursed! (6 min 17 sec)

The problem itself isn't all that bad and should be a quick fix, but it does make me wanna do some bench testing just to make sure it doesn't happen again. Don't worry, despite this plane's cursed status, I'm not giving up on it.

This is just a goofy little video I put together of the Bloody Baron's maiden flight directly into a tree. Enjoy!

FT Bloody Baron Maiden Flight and Crash into Tree (0 min 58 sec)

This was the same footage from my much longer video on the Bloody Baron's maiden flight (and crashes!). You can see that video in my previous blog entry or watch it here:

Got the FT Bloody Baron all fired up and ready for its maiden flight. Despite only using 1 battery, I managed to squeeze 3 flights out of her. 2 were real short flights that resulted in small crashes, and the 3rd was the longer flight. Plane performance was very good. I ran 30% for my low rates and 60% on my high rates. The low rates ended up being too low for the wind I was dealing with so I did the 2nd and 3rd attempts with high rates. Overall a fun experience... airtime, crashes, broken props, good rolls, and a tree!

So after some recent discussion with some folks I thought it was a good opportunity to show the damage my FT Simple Cub has taken from some crashes. Felt it was a good true testament to how durable these foamboard/Flitetest really are. So here you can see all the damage that has occurred to the FT Simple Cub.

New motor has been installed and the power pod has been rebuilt. All that is left is reinstall the receiver, double check my balance and battery placement, and she'll be ready to go again.

So since being back in the hobby and learning some of the new standards like 2.4Ghz radios, I also had to learn about all things involved with electric flight. One of these things was the use of lipo batteries. Some folks have implanted this fear in me that lipos can blow up at what others may feel is a very slight issue. And granted things can happen if they are improperly charged, handled, etc. So, while I charge things carefully, as with anyone, mistakes and incidents can happen. I had 2 incidents with 2 different lipos in my collection...one was shorted out briefly and the other had some physical damage in a crash. At first, I feared they would catch fire moments after the incidents occurred, but so far nothing has happened yet. So, I'm going to document this experience and just see if these batteries are still stable enough to use...OR if they do indeed need to be disposed of.

Yes...had a good morning flight with the FT Tiny Trainer. Talked about some things on camera while I worked on trimming the plane.

So on our way to our vacation destination we stopped in at the Aviation Museum of Kentucky located in Lexington, KY. Lots of cool things on display....helicopters, planes, jets, various engines, propellers, etc. Highly recommended if you are into aviation and happen to be in the area. Entry price is pretty affordable as well.

Another failed launch attempt of the FT Long EZ with a little more severe damage this time. So back to the repair (or maybe rebuild) bench with this one. I've got some new tricks and suggestions that I may try for next time OR, I may rig up/buy some sort of launcher.

After working through some of the kinks with the FT Simple Cub, I managed to add another kink by bending the prop shaft. I had actually never done that before. But I guess all that lawn darting can lead to it. I didn't even realize it had happened until I had done some repairs and was ready to fly it again.

To go along with the Flitetest forum's challenge Getting stupid with the Tiny Trainer, here's a video of my first flight and crash of the FT Tiny Trainer. I thought for this flight I'd be trying to get it trimmed out, but I spent more time going all over the place with it. Damage was pretty minor on the crash. I originally imagined this plane as kinda floaty but really on 3 cell power it's kind of a handful. Enjoy!

So after breaking one of my last plywood Flitetest firewalls I checked out some alternative options for some DIY firewalls. Taking a similar approach to what nerdnic had done (he used a plastic trashcan), I found a plastic dishpan from the dollar store and started cutting away. Once I got to the usable parts of the dishpan, I was able to cut out with scissors 30+ plastic firewalls that are lightweight and durable. All for probably just $3.

Announcing the retirement of my original FT Mini Scout airframe. So what's next for the FT Mini Scout...is this the end of it? Will there be a Version 2?

Yup, finally got some maiden flight airtime for the FT Simple Cub (3ch). And I even managed to get a crash out of it too on this maiden. So takeoff was pretty uneventful and the flight started out fine. But the wind picked up and I needed to bring her around to go back the other direction (towards the camera). To help combat the wind I flipped up to my high rates and apparently I must have had my high rates too high over the recommended settings. Ended up overcontrolling it until it finally hit the ground. Despite the sound of the crash, damage was pretty minimal.

The camera angle was not great as I was expecting to fly closer to the camera...but as you can see that didn't quite happen! I'll be testing out a new head camera setup here soon so hopefully angles will get a little better. But for right now, you can enjoy this distant brief maiden flight and smack on the pavement.

All right, here is the 3rd flight of the FT Mini Scout as part of the FT Mini Scout newbie challenge from the Flitetest Forums. Got the left bank issue sorted and it flies pretty good.

Another build I am doing in this build challenge is a foamboard profile plane. It is somewhat based off of a foamy scratchbuilt design here on RCGroups called "The Nasty" as well as a few other designs. Always thought profile planes were kinda neat and figured this would be a good cheap tool for practicing advanced maneuvers with.

As part of a build challenge that I participated in on the FT forums, I picked out the FT Tiny Trainer as one of my next builds. So here is the intro video to the FT Tiny Trainer. The FT Tiny Trainer is a versatile plane that can be used as a chuck glider or RC. It also has the ability to grow with the ability of the pilot by offering a polyhedral glider wing and a separate sport wing with ailerons. So you can go from 3 channel to 4 channel just by changing the wing. I'm going to start doing the plane as a 3 channel and see how it does.
