I don't really enjoy building any more but managed to finish 2 more. Maiden has to wait as I've been crazy busy at work. As usual, here are the details:

Feigao 20-30 3000 ish kV
Hacker 20A ESC
2 X 4g servos for ailerons
1 X 6g servo for elevator
Sky Lipo 3S 1000 maH
APC 4.1 X 4.1
Orange Rx
Graupner Precision spinner

Electrifly XPD-8:

This is my very first EDF.... I don't really like ducted fans but I really love the look of the Miglet/XPD-8.... I prefer the Miglet but these are way too hard to find now so I gotta settle for whatever's available.

Stock Hyperflow fan unit
eRC outrunner ~4200 kV
T-bird 18 ESC
2 X Cirrus 9g servos
Orange Rx
Sky Lipo 3S 1000 maH

ZERO trim needed. Absolutely in the same category as the Avioniks in terms of build and flight quality. At 13.1 oz, it's truly a pleasant to fly, well, my sub 10 oz Avionik Stinger isn't too shabby either.

Well, the Rifle finally got maidened after a couple of tweaks from previous owner's build: removal of spars (carbon tows) glued directly on surface of bottom of wing and horizontal stab (wing airfoil, and stab incidence angle problems??), and lubrication of elevator snake. This plane flies and tracks very similar to my other molded sp400 ships except the elevator needed a full 5mm of deflection for normal "low rate" flying whereas the moldies require just 2-3 mm, at recommended CG. Here's the setup:

Eflite Pro 25A ESC
APC 4.7 X 4.2
MKS servo (according to previous owner) for ailerons
HS-65hb for elevator
Sky Lipo 3S 1300 40C
AUW: 18.4 oz
As always,,,,, Graupner Precision spinner.

Well, I finally got back to the field today after about 10 weeks of winter weather nastiness. The CSD Twister now got a new power system: HET 3W, Hobbywing 30A ESC, and Sky Lipo 3S 1300 40C. Good speed w/ some nice gliding around. I also got a used Electrifly Rifle from a local guy thru the RCgroups classifieds couple days ago. Set-up undecided.

It's my day off and the weather is too crappy to fly, gosh I'm bored. Anywho, I thought I'll make today a family picture day. We've got the Avioniks, the CSDs, the Wattages, the Multiplexs (we even got the twins), then there were, well, the orphans,,,
UPDATE: Merlin was sold at the end of October.

Well I got this Alula (original version) from a nice guy from my field a while ago for absolutely nothing. It came w/ 2 Cirrus 4g servos. All I had to add was rx, bec, and battery. I flew it several times and didn't like it a whole lot, mainly because of very short flights. Not being a DLG guy, I kinda just put it away.
All of a sudden, I got the urge to pull it out from its resting place and give it a new life so to speak. This time around, I removed those 2 puny Cirrus 4g servos (I may have a use for them someday) and added 2 HS-55's, but moved them out onto the wings, instead of in the fuse. For the BEC, I use a Multiplex 8A brushed ESC. This thing is actually smaller than the CC BEC believe it or not. As of now, I don't have a battery for it, so re-maiden will have to wait. To get it to balance, it will have to gain another 0.9 oz or so, compared to its last AUW. Rx will be an AR6100e clone.

Well,, if it's small, fast, and cheap, I'll buy it regardless of how many I already have. It's a disease I tell ya.
Anyway, the D-05 finally got maidened. Launch was uneventful, she went straight up after leaving my hand without dropping an inch. NO FLUTTER. Landing was LOOOOONG. I need to rig up some sort of spoilerons. One interesting note, in the midst of putting the wing on, between wiping the sweat off of my hands, putting a piece of tape on the wing (D-05's require a piece of tape at the back of the wing, just like the Stinger), and trying to stop myself from shaking, I must have forgotten to tighten one of the wing bolts. I landed and noticed one was gone . Luckily, nobody was killed by a 28.3 oz missile at Fairview Park, Costa Mesa today.

Well, the Twister is complete except motor and ESC. I'm thinking a 28mm inrunner of course, 2500-3000kV, and a 25-35A ESC. Here's a partial setup:

Motor: HET 3W
ESC: T-bird 36
Sky Lipo 3S 1300 40C
JR 241 for ailerons
HS-55 for elevator
APC 4.75 X 4.75
AUW: 15.8 oz
Graupner Precision spinner

Well, I got yesterday and today off, and guess what? we got rain. That's OK, I got lots of time to finish up the D-05, done w/ the wing and motor mount on the CSD Twister. To top things off, Mr. Mailman dropped off a BNIB Microjet. I'm in heaven.
Posted by 8ballfever | Oct 03, 2011 @ 11:57 PM | 6,673 Views
Well, the D-05 is almost done, just awaiting ESC, and batt, which are in the mail. Looks like the setup will be:

HET 2W-23
Phoenix 80
APC 4.75 X 4.75
Sky Lipo 4S 2200 40C
AR6255 (from D-99)
2X Dymond D60
JR DS281 for elevator
Thunder Power 3S 250

The D-99 will get an AR600, CC BEC and Hyperion 2S 240
The Sokol will get the Mega 16/15/3 and T-bird 36 (came from the Switchblade)
The Lynx will get a HeliMax 2500kV 28mm inrunner, and a (Hobbywing?) 30A ESC.

Here she is.... drum roll please,,,, an Avionik D-05, just got it from Grobbins666... I'm so happy I think I'm gonna cry. It's just the airframe w/ 3 servos. I'm gonna take my time on this one, as I'm gonna move the aileron servos to out on the wings.. stay tuned.

Well, the Reno Racer had a successful maiden flight, although the launch resulted in a couple of "look out" from the bench. For this first launch, I had a small amount of up elevator on a switch, tossed it underhand, approximately 30 degrees up at about half throttle, just like all of my pylon racer planes. Well, the plane went straight into a vertical, pretty much stalled and did a hard bank to the left toward the bench. I managed to save it after yelling out "my bad". It turned out I had CG a little too rear ward, mixed in w/ what seems to be up motor thrust angle, first flight was very chaotic. Second flight, no more up elevator on the switch, and I threw it up overhand. It was uneventful. I will mix in some down elevator to throttle to compensate for bad motor thrust angle.
Overall, this plane looks and flies very very nice. The turns are crisp and it tracks fantastically. Speed is not shabby at all w/ the HET 4W and APC 5.5 X 4.5 on 3S.

Let's see if I could trace back and figure out where I got each plane from. Let's start w/ the pylon racers.

Avionik D-99: free (crashed but fixable) from RCgroups member Grobbins666. He flies at my field.
Avionik Stinger: traded my Projeti for it w/ RCgroups member ED3. He's from Pasadena. I met up w/ him near the Rose Bowl.
Sokol: bought NIB unbuilt from SoaringUSA. I drove up there (half hour drive, not too bad) to pick it up in person. It was just $150 then.
VIP: bought it from RCgroups member smokeytbear, he also flies at my field.
Adrenalin II: funny story: It was for sale here on RCgroups, but seller said LPU only. Someone jumped in and bought it. I then pm'ed this guy and asked if he would sell it to me. He said yes.
CSD Switchblade: bought it here, NIB and unbuilt.

Now the foamies:

Wattage Hawk: bought it from swap meet at my field
Multiplex Merlin: traded some stuff for it with a guy from my field.
Microjet (green wing): bought it NIB, factory built from a guy at the field.
Microjet (orange wing): Craig's list, local of course.
Super Cub: LHS
Hobby Lobby Lynx: Craig's list.
Wattage P-51 Reno Racer: local RC swap meet.
Alula: free from the guy that I got the VIP from (smokeytbear)

Possible future build: CSD Twister. I bought it NIB, unbuilt from a guy at the field long long time ago....
The 5 Wattage Hawk kits are sitting in the closet, waiting patiently for someday to be pulled out, built and raced. What I have in mind is my 3 nephews, but the oldest is only 8 right now,,, it will be quite a wait... assuming that they all will be interested in RC planes.

Well, I spent a good 6-7 hours of my day off today putting together the Reno Racer. I must admit I don't enjoy building as much as I used to. Build went together without a hitch,, and I wish I would have done it way sooner because the finished plane looks and feels fantastic. Here's the setup:

APC 5.5 X 4.5
T-bird 36 ESC
Rhino 3S 1000 30C
2 X Tower Pro 9g
Orange DSM2 Rx

Will try to maiden tomorrow, but gosh, it's gonna be too damn hot. We'll see.

As for the Lynx, maiden was successful yesterday. Speed was excellent with the Mega 16/15/3 (HET 3W that was intended for it burned out after 3 seconds)
