The XK A600 = Bag of Fertiliser !

Hmmmm ! Opening the box !

It is light , reasonably made .

BUTT and it's a huge BUTT ( Bigger than that )

The Tx is garbage ,,

Moving the sticks you go from no control surface movement to suddenly all the control surface movement

Oh dear ! I had a real bad feeling going to my CG test area ...

And that bad feeling was confirmed when I crashed the XK A600 over and over again failing to achieve anything near 10 seconds of flight time . Don't get me wrong , the XK A600 flew just fine in a straight line . But when you wanted to turn it just hunted Terrafirma . This is exactly the same issue as I had with the XK A800 with the factory Tx , only the XK A600 is like 10 times worse .

After sufficiently breaking the XK A600 to the point that I was left with no delusions about being able to fly the XK A600 I packed the broken parts into a pocket and headed home . ( Some foam bits were left behind ) ..
Conclusion = PITA ( Pain In The Asp )

Enter the Dragon ! ( Sorry no , just the Jumper T12 )

Jumper T12 and SFHSS ( Futaba Protocol )

Thankfully the bind process is relatively Painless !
The Rx board has a button on its side ..
Just power up the XK A600 and then push the button ( Max )
Now start the bind process in the Tx ( SFHSS ) Multi protocol or Futaba .

Thing to remember is = The XK transmitters send out a bind signal on start up ..

1) VD5M FrSky Rx ...

Ok , it was working ... Then it stopped working !
I purchased this Rx about 2 years ago and left it in a box .
Honestly , last few years I have had nothing but issues with FrSky receivers ..
So my SU-27 project has taken several steps backward because of this receiver .
I literally had to break the SU-27 to get the receiver out for test and evaluation .
It could be FUBAR or it could be something as simple as frequency offset .
I am replacing the Rx with something similar but DSMx .. ( No issues with DSMx )

2) Fly Bear F16 ...

This is a really small Rx ( FS2A Flysky protocol - thats the new flysky protocol , not the old 9x protocol ) = To be tested !
Mine measures some 18.7mm Long and 11.8mm wide .. ( It really is small )
Has a ? is it 4A or 5A brushed ESC built in .
Has solder pads for battery and brushed motor , or you can run VIA ESC source .. ( 5v Max )
Apparently you can have your cake and eat it !

This Rx is going into the brushed 450x flying wing ..
So hopefully some useful information shortly .

Micro Su-27 Brushless Project .

Projected weight = ? ( No idea )
The little 08026 on 1s puts out some 42 grams of thrust @ around 25,000 rpm .
So as long as the completed flying weight is under 42 grams , I can be a happy camper .
So far pilling everything onto my scales I get 23.7 grams ( missing one servo ) .
But there will be trimming involved to shorten wires and reduce weight ( so ??? ) .
The first one with the F949 flight control board and brushed 10mm motor came out at 32.6 grams flying weight .
So there might be some hope ..

VD5M FrSky 5ch Rx (0 min 37 sec)



I have had this receiver on hand for ? Almost 2 years maybe and never got around to using it .
With my recent interest in Micro Su-27's , I thought it might be time to blow the dust off this Micro Rx and give it a go .
I have some small servos , and I have some 1s ESC's ..
And I have some small brushless motors that are 1s capable if not 1s ..

Anyhow .. I have not seen much info on this Rx ...

Ch2 and Ch5 = D8 ... Use the bind plug to connect .. I put power into Ch3

The Rx will go into bind mode when power is added ...
Have your Tx in bind mode or put it into bind mode ..
For me the bind was so fast I never saw it ..
I removed the bind plug and added a micro servo and it looks to work just fine ..
Power is VIA a 1s ESC ...

This Rx apparently can do V8 mode ( Ch1 and Ch5 ) , but I could not get a bind ..
Maybe some frequency offset ?

Anyhow , will probably use this Rx for my next Micro Su-27 build . It will give me more aileron ! ( Than the F949 board )
Now , what motor to use ?

Volantex Decathlon With landing gear ( 44mm Wheels ) (18 min 17 sec)


Chalk and cheese folks !

It flies so much better after some tweaking . + Those 44mm wheels ....
Though they are not enough ..
The very last landing ripped the landing gear out of the fuse because the wheels caught on something ..
So while the 44's are a nice replacement ? It still needs more ...
I dont know if those 60mm wheels will fit ( width ) . But it looks like larger wheels are wanted and some serious thought into strengthening the slot the gear goes into . The UHU glue did not let go ( glue I used for repairs ) , what happened is the plastic gear retainer was ripped out of the surrounding foam ! ( The foam let go ) This tells me 2 things ..
1) It is a weak spot ( landing gear slot )
2) The wheels are too small ( catch in the grass )

Centring ! ...........

Still giving issue ! So looks like the servos are also how do you do .. BUTT and it might be a huge butt !
It might be a voltage issue ?

Came home , charged the battery and everything seems to centre normally ?
Is it a Voltage issue ???? Voltage drops and centring becomes so so ?
Maybe use it as a low battery warning ?

Landing gear slot ( plastic ) glued in place again !
There was a slight tendency to roll left , so I made a slight aileron tweak to the right aileron ..
Elevator is back to the original position , but might need a little down ..

Hmmm , still cant get used to the new decade .. It is how ever 2020 , just feels a lot like 2019 . ( Same 0 same 0 )

I did some templates for the little micro Su-27 - 2 sheets of printer paper .
Just print them out , join the 2 sheets .
Cut out the templates and then transfer to your choice of material ..

Balsa / Foam / Depron ...

The Decathlon is now waiting for some 60mm wheels ..
Plan is to bend the landing gear forward some as they sit almost @ CG .. ( Lets move some weight forward ) Also to stop any tendency to tip forward . Having the landing gear near CG is just monumental ( something ) .
Also the 30mm wheels are almost useless . Acting more like an arestor hook than wheels , especially on grass .
I might go out one more time to see how the changes I made ( trim ) affect the decat .

So far , this is in no way shape or form a beginners model ( not by my sample ) . It is how ever @ PITA .....

Still waiting on stuff ordered in 2019 , come on , I ordered that stuff last decade !!!

UPDATE

Some 44mm wheels came in the post ..
The 44mm Wheels dwarf the 30mm wheels ..
I really think this model could use 60mm Wheels ..
Will see if the 60mm will fit when they get here ..
For now I will leave the 44mm wheels on the Decat .
Also bent the legs forward a little ...

Decathlon with DSM2 Rx and Taranis Qx7 Tx (7 min 40 sec)


Prop is garbage = Old junk Quad prop ( budget quad ) . But it works well enough .
Did not want to risk a real prop !

Tx = Taranis Qx7 with multi protocol module .
Rx = DSM2 6ch I had lying around .



Wow , Decat still pulling up up and away ...
Took all the down trim the Tx trim pots had to offer ..
Model is still turning left .
Last hand launch and the Decat almost fly's well .
Running with a larger heavier battery .
Decat does not like the breeze / wind ... ( Some of that might be the rubbish prop )

Came home and made some changes .. Do I wait for new wheels ? ( Will probably shift the CG forward a little )

So ????
I can confirm that the Factory Tx was / is garbage ..
Also the roll axis is a little unstable .. ( Is the wing warped ? = Ailerons are )

This plane might be ok if :
1) You get one that is straight
2) You get the Plug and play version
3) you slap on larger wheels ( I just ordered some 60mm - I really think it can use some 60mm )
4) Strengthen the slot / area the landing gear goes .
5) Use a larger battery ( mine is a 900mAh 2s ) - Watch that CG !
6) Your lucky !

I think the RTF is to be avoided , the Plug and play might be ok ( MIGHT ) .. ANd to that end LUCK might have to much to say !
I will try and get this thing flying ( Try ) , But it is a " Pain In The Abacus " .. Almost a " Pain In The Asp " ... Hard to call it right now !
Either one or the other .

A) After 2 maidens - I would rate this ( RTF version ) Zero Stars out of 5
B) Every time I go to fly , the Tx seems to become more and more rubbish . It will not hold a trim , and the last time out the trim buttons refused to actually work . I would trim the plane and a few seconds later ( after launch ) the trim would change mid flight . ( What the parking lot ? )

I just dont know what to say , except what a pile of dog left overs this plane is ( and or Tx )

I have pulled the Rx out , and I will see if I can bind to it with a multi protocol Tx .
Push come to shove , a new Rx might have to go into this model .
The Tx is GARBAGE , and if the Rx wont bind to anything , well , a bit of a shame as I will BIN them .
The servos look to be Hobby Grade , so I really dont see issues from there .
It just has to be the rubbish transmitter ...

Also the factory supplied props are weak , the slot the landing gear goes in is weak . The CG is too far back with the supplied battery . I put in a larger battery to hit the factory specified CG spot , but that Tx ! There was little improvement in how the plane flew .
So I am done with the Decathlon for now ..

It desperately needs a decent Tx , much larger wheels , a larger heavier battery and a decent prop ! ( Then it might fly )

My personal opinion is = Best to avoid this one ..

Update :

I tried to bind to the Volantex Rx , but it was a no go .
So this product uses some obscure protocol that is not supported by my Multi protocol Tx .
So scrounging around I found a DSM2 Rx I was using to test a Flybarless Gyro ..

I have set up the Decat ( again ) for my Taranis Qx7 .. Set all the control surfaces ..
And hopefully it might fly ( ?? )

Having your trims re-adjust mid flight because of a rubbish Tx , is just (?) too much ...

XK x450 unboxing + hover test (5 min 59 sec)


Air quality was terrible ..
But there was little wind to speak off .

Someone kicked (?) the hell out of the box , but thankfully the XK x450 was undamaged .
I dont have XT30 connectors , so I used some 2.5mm bullet connectors shoved into the plug and alligator clips to bring the battery to full charge ( balance charged ) . So will take a while for a XT60 to XT30 adaptor plug to arrive . ( So this is all she wrote for now )

Drift

The x450 does drift some what .
I connected the battery on a flat surface , and there was a lot of drift back and to the left ..
Reconnecting the battery seemed to help a lot ..

My sample hovers fine .
Hmmm , maybe the drift can be adjusted for by the angle you keep the x450 at when connecting the battery and arming ?
Or just trim it out ? This hover maiden was just one battery , and as mentioned I dont have a XT30 connector for the charger .
Using the alligator clips was risky business !

I will say that the x450 does feel a little flimsy here and there , and could break in a spectacular way if jammed into terrafirma . It is at the very least a very interesting RC plane that should entertain . Looking forward to getting my adaptor plug so I can charge the battery safely and doing some transitions .

Now related to that is the propeller that came on the Ezio / FMS 800 Vtail ..
I really disliked this folding prop .
Both models needed 100% throttle to fly , and even then power was lacking .
The Ezio got a fixed 4x3 and the FMS got a HK Folding prop . Both solutions work .
But testing the 1811 gave me the opportunity to see what was what ..

By having a Test Prop , you can compare motors ..






This is by no means a fair comparison , but it is a comparison ..
Same prop , same RPM , same thrust !
Different motors and different power ( in ) , and different power consumption .
As well , motor efficiency ..

The larger 1306 is using 10.4 watt less power to generate the same thrust as the smaller 1108 .

But lets not forget the variables , like motor weight , battery weight ( over all weight )
So another calculation would be power to weight ratio .. ( That's an important one ) .
Ever wonder how a 100HP car can keep up with a 500HP car = Power to weight ratio !
And a lighter car should be capable of going a little faster thru corners , as long as it has enough tire .. ( Those nasty variables )
So a lighter quad should turn faster and tighter than a heavier quad .
Also accelerate faster ( as long as you have the power to do so ) ..
You may not think that 5 grams amounts to much until you turn it into kinetic energy .. And once mass has acquired velocity ... ( Well )
It's all so terribly interesting .

I think everyone can understand the thrust information ?
Now I kind of tried to do set RPM points for direct RPM comparison as well as reference ( If you can Tacho your prop / motor ) ..
So should give you a ball park for thrust if you know your RPM .

Now the other thing you can calculate is energy efficiency .. ( How much energy it takes to create said thrust )

1935 3 blade

Divide your Energy by thrust = Energy per unit of thrust

4.5 watt divided by 23 grams of thrust = 0.375watt per Gram ( 0.375/1 ) That 0.375/1 would be your efficiency or energy rating .

UPDATE 5 Jan
Apparently people are doing this equation the other way ...
So 23 grams divided by 4.5 watt = 5.1g / 1 watt ( Either way is not wrong , just a different way of expressing the data )

Now bare in mind that that is at the tested RPM ..
So as RPM increases ...

15,000 rpm = 0.375/1
20,000 rpm = 0.387/1
25,000 rpm = 0.397/1
30,000 rpm = 0.416/1

2435 4 blade prop

15,000 rpm = 0.313/1
20,000 rpm = 0.355/1
25,000 rpm = 0.389/1
30,000 rpm = 0.409/1

3025 2 blade

15,000 rpm = 0.229/1
20,000 rpm = 0.260/1
25,000 rpm = 0.278/1
30,000 rpm = 0.289/1

These figures would be used for working out the efficiency of a prop ( Yes I know = That would be static efficiency as the test is static )
I dont have a wind tunnel to test at various speeds , though NASA and a few other places could probably do such testing .

Time for some CG testing ..
Let me just say this particular Volantex product has not impressed .
Did I already mention the warped Ailerons ? Makes a maiden interesting for sure .

First chuck the Decat spiralled into a right turn and hit the ground ( No power ) .. All the control surfaces were as straight as I could get them .
Some tweaking and it went into the ground in the other direction .
Hit the ground a few more times .. Then finally got it to glide .. Even then if would go left or right .

Centring ? Wonder if Volantex knows the meaning of the term .
Is it the Tx ? ( Probably )
Anyhow , servo centring looks to be just nasty ..

Landing gear . Where it slots into the fuse = Massive / giant / weak spot ...
First time I managed to bring the Decat down onto the wheels , they folded like spaghetti . Breaking the plastic landing gear slot .
Those wheels are too small . Probably act more like a arrestor hook in the grass than wheels should . 60 or 70mm wheels would be far more appropriate for a model like this .

So I am torn !
Do I toss the factory Tx / Rx and just put in a new Rx and use my Qx7 , or do I try the unimpressive factory electronics .

Right now I am unimpressed .. ( Buyers remorse )
There are better / cheaper planes out there that dont handle like a bag full of wild cats .
