After a long absence, I spend an entire day last weekend getting re-acquainted with my Renny and Supra Electric gliders. This after 6 years of not flying, I was even considering selling off my RC equipment.

I am glad I didn't, I still love this hobby!

After reviewing my equipment and determining serviceability, I upgraded my 8 cell transmitter battery to a 1C LiPo 3 cell, which fits inside my Futaba TCAP10. This will be a welcome change to be able to fly an entire weekend without worrying about transmitter batteries!

Now an update from the past, and part of the reason why I stopped flying for all those years. On Saturday, 2/16/2013 at El Dorado State Park in Long Beach, I lost my AVA Electric. I was downwind on final and lost complete control, ended up in a tree, then falling out and damaging the wing and snapping the tail boom in half. Guys at the field said winds on final can get tricky. Personally, I do not think that was it, and not for sake of my ego as a pilot. I remember the airplane not responding to any of my commands. Like a frequency hit. I know its' a tough argument to make using Futaba FAAST 2.4 Ghz. I never really did a post-crash analysis of the debris. There could be many possibilities, including receiver battery got too low.

UPDATE: Just looked at the damage after all these years, (still painful) the stabilizer surfaces and linkages are completely intact, only the elevator pushrod is bend due to impact.

But one thing sticks out in my mind,...Continue Reading

I have been collecting kits and engines for many years, and while I love building I feel like my larger airplanes are less practical than I would like. I really enjoy small glow power models with tiny four strokes... I'm weird... so I'm looking at this shelf of engines and thinking about how I miss driving a 5 speed car... and I kind of had this hair brained idea I should sell the whole shelf and buy a beater.. something I can fix up and work on with my son. something with a 5 speed and rear wheel drive... dare I say all wheel drive?

I was heavily impacted by watching the drift bible when I was a teenager... if you have never watched it I feel like it made me a much safer driver as I've been able to handle sliding conditions in emergencies over the years where my car ended up drifting suddenly on ice. I have never crashed a car and I feel like mastering these skills are a zen like experience akin to flying helicopters and building with balsawood...

The Drift Bible (How to drift for starters/pro's) with the Drift King (FULL HQ) (1 hr 9 min 25 sec)

I miss having a 5 speed.. I feel kinda gutted not having a 5 speed. I got to drive perhaps the zenith of manual car technology this summer... my friend let me drive his 1991 Acura NSX with a supercharger and numerous other performance upgrades... holy moly! the connected, visceral feel of that mid engine v6 with the screaming supercharger, no power steering, stability control, just 3 pedals and pure bliss...

450x @ the Football field (3 min 14 sec)

These little wings fly amazingly well ..
I have to say I am surprised ..
Just needed more power ..

Still tending to pull up , so more trimming needed .

Flies nice , turns nice , glides nice .
Weighs less than a box of tissues and is not overly expensive .
Battery was not fully charged , so flight is a little shorter .

1st Solo 8-10-19
Did my first solo on Aug 10th thanks to Dave and Bob, two out of town flyers who happened to be at my field and where nice enough to give me some pointers. Dave co piloted with me for a few flights after Ben, our local "trainer" let me take the club trainer up the previous weekend.

After I had Dan take up the plane and trim it out, I landed it after I few it under his supervision. The first sideways bounce began to tear apart the undercarriage. Did modifications using 1/8 music wire to replace front strut utilizing the front float mount slot and a coat hanger to provide back support attached to the rear float mount. Used wire and solder to attach front of coat hanger to front struts and then used nitro fuel tubing to act as shock absorber between front struts.

My first task is to practice touch and go's so I can get over being so paranoid of landing, particularly in the wind. Most of my flying has been in 10 mph with a Timber 1.5m foamy ARF.

4-5th flight
Crash 1
- Cartwheel (Minor slow speed) - disoriented as to where the end of the runway was making a N. bound approach, plane does a cartwheel before the end of the runway due to stalling about 3-4' off the ground.
Repairs - Landing gear had to be straightened.
Analysis - better to land smoothly in the grass off the field than to push getting onto the runway, better for the plane and my nerves. New gear holding up well.

8th flight
Crash #2
- Nose Plant (unknown - likely moderate...Continue Reading
