Found another great new spot for some close proximity fpv flying. It gave me a chance to test out the Lumenier AXII Long Range Antenna on my goggles for penetration. There were far too many people around to test long range today but the new long antenna is a great improvement over the stock anttenna, especially as I sit down to fly.

Piecing together a canopy has been interesting. The acetate has to be curved. Fastening “glass” to the ply formers has been a challenge.

I started with cardboard cutouts. I had an old cowl that was perfectly curved. It also handles the heat from my heat gun.

Glues wouldn’t stick. I found that CA provided a strong surface. I used double-sided clear tape. It’s an experiment right now. However, I like the acetate the im using. Keeping the inside clean will be important.

OK just received mine. Looks like the FTr16 receiver might be complicated. I saw a lot of threads where all any one wanted to do was complain. Change is good, and acceptance can save you money and reduce stress. So I say the PL18 probably saved me anywhere from 200 to 800 dollars. I like the lipo internal for multiple reasons, like it makes me ensure I don't be lazy and not charge, it can last up to 8 hours of fly time and most likely will, can be charged wirelessly and Micro USB so if I'm weak enough to not charge before I go to the field and even forget my Micro USB cord and remember to bring the wireless unit I can still charge. I fly airplanes, helis and am building a hex copter and am willing to bet that I will be able to use it for my hovercraft and my PT 109. It feels great in my hands, it warns me of errors I am making before I cause myself problems, tells me the battery left on both Tx and Rx with a simple graphic representation. And I still haven't found out a minuscule fraction of the capabilities available. If you are scared to buy one, download the operators manual and quick start guides and learn about it before you sell it short. It looks like the racing receiver is a bit complicated, but because I build from balsa plywood basswood and plans, I'm sure I will enjoy the challenge. Came to me from Hong Kong in about 10 days. Can't wait to launch my hex with this radidio.

Greetings. Just got a Dumas Gipsy Moth for my birthday. I decided that since there is not too much info on this particular kit from Dumas that I’ll start a build thread. I intend to design the plane to be a a 4 channel with ailerons. Unlike the Trittle Tiger Moth the Gipsy is a little smaller and instructions do not include how to make it RC. With 30” to play with, I think there’s plenty of room for a wide variety of options.
• I’m going with the lightweight PICO GWS radio that I had in my GWS Tiger Moth (Yes I love Tiger Moths)
• Considering going with a brushless BL250 for power... probably almost too much but it flies the Trittle Moth with plenty of power!

Today, I converted a Hewlett Packard 500W PSU to a 12V DC bench top power supply to use with RC battery chargers. I cut off 53 wires and 10 connectors. I grouped like wires together and then covered them with heat shrink tubing. I soldered 6 12V leads and 6 ground leads each in parallel. I soldered the power on signal wires together so that the power supply turns on when plugged into 120V AC. When I was finished I connected my Turnigy quad charger to the converted PSU and the charger lit up and then I charged a 2200 3S LiPo at 8.36 amps. Pretty cool.

This morning, I had the rare privilege to hold and photograph Carl Goldberg's personal Gentle Lady. Yes, this bird was built and flown by Carl Goldberg...one of my model aviation heroes! The Gentle Lady debuted back in 1980.

Continuing the experiments for using carbon tow stretched across a truss shape, this is a very early result for a fuselage side for my 24" Telemaster.

I used 1K tow, about 10ft, and wound it through the nails, doubling up in some places. With 1K, if you were organized you could come up with a winding pattern that reinforces areas according to the need.

As a first test, I was nearly sure that 1K would be a joke. But it might just work. The structure is stiffer than I expected and not a noodle. I do have commercial .010" rod and the cured tow isn't too far off the mark for stiffness. I used a tapered, stretched piece of heat-shrink to compress and round the tow.

I was going to do a 3K test next but instead I'm going to repeat it with 1K so I can assemble a full fuselage and get a feel for the handling characteristics. If it proves viable I'll need to keep practicing to improve my skills. This section was unglued in 7 points and needed CA . The points that did bond successfully are quite good and are "free" from a weight perspective.

All in all this has been a fun start.

Ok , there was some wind !
Otherwise it was a real DLG deal of a day !

I took my modified whip to the park ..
Even played in a few thermals when the wind backed off !
I am so tired , man I was there for a while .

That wind was playing with me , but when it eased off I was able to keep the Whip in the rising air . Unfortunately the sink hole tends to live up to its name and when the lift vanished the air became sink and the whip came down like a lead balloon .

There was just enough lift to tease me for quite some time ( keep me on the hook ) .
For better days !

Still , a good day at the park with just a tempting amount of thermal action .
