I had a receiver and set of servos my family got me for christmas and I decided I wanted to do something as a rocket glider but also to call back to my first aileron plane, a Kraft Das Ugly Stik(mine was actually a hobby shack electric stik version).

I decided that since it was a rocket plane, and a semi futuristic design, I'd use canard but keep the tail and wing shape a-la ugly stik.

I used a doubled kf airfoil wing and non movable canard and elevon controls, 27" wingspan, 30.5" length, 2.6" diameter. Weight all up rtf is 11 oz.

I've gotten pretty good at doing indoor test glides to figure out max rearward CG, however in this case, even with a good canard cg calculator in hand, I was pretty tail heavy. The first flight I should have called it der Bodenjäger because it was hunting the ground, not the Sky......

It didn't help I was maidening in a 10 mph wind that was blowing downwind toward the launcher...Off the rail it pitched forward into the exhaust trail obscuring it, and I tried to react, but it wound up doing three nice 50 foot loops about 10' off the ground at the bottom with no control input, and settling into a perfect landing in the field. This was due in large part to my piloting prowess and the luck of the Irish....

Deciding that either I got some inadvertent canard incidence or tail heaviness I added .3 oz nose weight and gave it another try. This time it boosted much better, I moved the launcher and myself so I was down wind...Continue Reading

My family got me an rx and servos for xmas and I hate to see them just sitting there, so when I got home from Seattle today, I sketched out another on my list, a flyable RC RG hybrid styled after the X-2 and Eddie Braun versions of the skycycle. It came out pretty light, 9.4 oz rtf with a 28.25" length, 2.6" diameter, 20" wingspan. Of course the wings are larger so it will fly, and the wing goes further forward so I'll have to scale down the name on the side to fit the remaining forward portion of the fuselage. I glued a small conical cone onto the PNC-80BB to create the crush cone on the model, then proceeded to cut and fit everything together. Did some indoor glide/CG verification and Finished the decals except for the lettering and gold stars. The color scheme is a mashup between the Evel Spirit and X-2, I'll put Evel Knievel on one side and Evel Spirit on the other. For the pilot, I only found a good left/right view of Evel's Wembley helmet so I shrunk a printout, glued it to some .03 styrene and covered it in clear packing tape. Another scratch build I've been thinking about for a long time came to fruition over christmas. I got three very nice flights today on the Viper. Just need a fine tweak of down trim for boost, and a slight bit more up trim for glide than my initial settings. Given the small wing area and 11 oz glide weight, It flew much better than I was expecting, not a long glide, but very nice none-the-less and had plenty of pitch control down to flare on landing, very nice! Here are the three flights in order starting with the maiden flight.

I used model plan foam for the wings, lightweight 2.6" tubing and an angle cut plastic nose cone, 29" long, 23.5" wingspan and 12 oz rtf weight.

Here's another that I've been mulling over in my head, converting the original rocket design into an RC rocket glider. This design was an Estes rocket themed in 1950's -ish flash gordon/Buck Rogers sci-fi style that was supposed to be a galactic pirate ship with a dragon theme. I used 2.6" lightweight tubing, 23.5" wingspan, 34" length, 11 oz rtf with rocket motor. It's got 235 sq inches of wing.

I built the cockpit box out of depron, as are the vertical stabs, and the wing is MPF with a single 1/8"spar with elevons. I played with openrocket to evaluate the lateral stability with the forward vertical stab and determined the placement to give me margin, then adjusted the wing shape and location to minimize nose weight needed. The cockpit is just an opened bottom box that I then sanded to contour using sandpaper over the body tube. Then I cut the notch in the forward vertical fin to fit the height of the box. Vertical stab goes through the rear of the wing and body and has a notch for the motor tube, and the motor tube has some locating strips on either side to center it laterally.

I like steampunk things, but not enough to build them myself, but this sort of has that feel. I left it white because the original markings tend to pop more than when on gray/silver. I hand cut the vinyl in red and then used black strips to make the dragon wing accents. For rivets, I make a 12" strip of milk jug plastic and make holes every 1/4"...Continue Reading

I did the wing a flat plate, with just the motor pods mounted under the wing tips, and a modified front bridge/pod that is flat on the bottom to allow the rail guides/rail to clear the bottom. A 24mm motor tube will go from rear into the front bridge, and allow the wires to route through to the receiver/1s battery in the bridge with a small plate on the bottom to cover it up made of styrene. The 24mm tube will have a coupler the full length inside to reinforce it. This will be adaptable to a pusher parkjet if desired as well.

I've cut the pieces out, 29" long, 23.5" wingspan, around 11" at the root. I'll have an angled plate on top of the 24mm tube to give it the tapered look. I did add a single vertical stab for stability.

I wanted to do an orbital transport glider for a while, but buying a bunch of BT-80 tubing and cones for my kits finally pushed me over the edge. This is based on the late 60's Estes Orbital transport that had an SST style booster the recovered under parachute, with a biggyback glider that was freeflight. The glider had a low mounted wing that had a lot of dihedral for stability in free flight. The elevons were angle cut and were bent up for glide, and the drag was calculated in the stack to give a straight boost.

For a standalone glider that boosts vertically I didn't want a low mounted wing with dihedral, I prefer a mid mounted wing to get the servos on the bottom but up away from landing damage. Based on the dimensions I was able to just re-use the same wing I use for the Hypersonic III, Jayhawk, and Marauder kits so I had a known good CG location. It went together really quickly, and I hand cut the vinyl trim using what I had laying around. I used standard straight elevons and just mocked the angled wider tip elevons with trim vinyl and some sharpie markers to give it that "orbital transport" look. I added some leading edge color since it was a bit plain, and added a stripe on the bottom to remind me what direction I should be pointing

CG just needed .25 oz of nose weight, so AUW ready to fly with E-6 is 10.25 oz. 2.6" diameter, 32" long, 20" wingspan.

Maiden flight was perfect, hands off and glide was perfect as well, here is the maiden...

Here are two prototypes for kits I've just released. Both are based on BT-80 lightweight tubing from Balsa machining, and the estes PNC-80BB nose cone.

First is the Daedalus, inspired by the X-37B tiny shuttle used by the air force on clandestine missions. It uses 2.6" lightweight tubing and plastic nose cone with a MPF wing with single carbon spar and V tail made of 6mm depron. 34" long, 23" wingspan, 10.5 ounces ready to fly using a 24mm rocket motor.

The second is the Marauder cruise missile, based on the 1950's Mace and Matador missiles, I wanted a swept wing, but the MPF is a little too flexible for thin swept wings, so I made a delta with with elevons, and hid a portion of the wing using black trim vinyl, the advantage is you get a large wing and light wing loading with a swept wing look. 32" long, 20" wingspan, 10.5 ounces ready to fly.

Both of these use markings from stickershock23 that I designed with them.

Here is something I just finished, 3" diameter tube, 55" long, 37" wingspan, 26.5 oz rtf using a 32mm Aerotech G-12 long burn rocket motor. This is a 1.5x upscale of a smaller 2" version I did last month that flew well. The idea was to take the wing planform from the 2001 space odyssey shuttle and make a flyable design. I had already done a Pan Am logo on one of my other rocket gliders so I thought Trans World sounded better anyway....HS-65hb servos, a single 500mah 1s lipo and AR-400 receiver, all mounted at the CG, I adjusted wing location to avoid any need for balast. Here are some build pictures and a flight video. Wings are double thickness 6mm depron with lightweight hollow 3/16" carbon spars. Parts tracings/parts list and instructions are on my site at http://www.dynasoarrocketry.com My depron is some of the stuff with a curve in it, but by doing top and bottom wings I was able to reverse the curve and along with the spars it flatted out nicely. Same for the vertical stab. Look at the plans pulldown and select the orion plans.

Had the final two flights today on my Titan II Dynasoar stack, both were perfect, here's the flight video from yesterday. Glider is 32" long and weighs 8 oz, full stack is 8" diameter by 9' tall and made out of 2mm and 6mm depron and weighs 80 ounces with glider ready to fly on an H motor, boosts to around 400' and then ejects the glider which is RC. Retiring it now while it is still in one piece after 2 years and 10 successful flights. Some flight photos courtesy of Gary Goncher.

I used up my final piece of 3" body tube with a cute little A-7 corsair II. 22" wingspan, 24" length, 9.75 oz rtf with a 24mm E-6 rocket motor. Painting and panel lines are on, nose is a hand carved laminated block of depron that plugs into a 1" long by 2" diameter body tube glued into the front of the body tube to allow me access to the receiver and flight battery. Stickershock Vinyl put the finishing touch.

Here are a pair that I did in parallel, both using the 3" tubing I had and depron surfaces. I tried to style the wing and tail like a Mig 15 shape with a little stub T tail but use elevons for control for simplicity. The rocket glider came out at 10.75 oz rtf with a 24mm E-6 motor. The pusher came out at just over 14 oz rtf with a grayson microjet V-3 and apc 6x4 prop and venom 800mah 3s pack with grayson esc. The grayson esc is heavy and overkill at 1.125 oz and 30 amps but it was super cheap. I flew the rocket glider first to determine max rearward CG.

specs: 28" wingspan, 23" length, 3" diameter.

For the pusher version, I had to make a few modifications compared to the rocket glider. I had to move the motor mount from the center to the bottom of the tube so that the prop would clear the tail. I added a keel which along with skids helps give a bit of clearance for the motor/prop when landing, and gives a nice handhold for launching. Since the battery/electric motor are heavier than the rocket motor and 1s battery, I taped the wing to the top of the fuse before mounting it to allow me to place the required CG right where the natural balance point of the model was, and then cut the wing slot. This location meant the wing had to be about 1.5" further forward than on the rocket glider version. The actual model required 1/4 oz of tail weight for perfect trim.

In my recent SPEV(spare parts eliminationv vehicle) mode, I have some more 3" psII tubes that are 21.5" long, I'm thinking of doing a mig 19 using one....wing won't be very big so may glide like a stone. A quick mass model I did playing with wing sweep to minimize required nose weight with components placed looks like a rtf weight of 10.5 oz and a wing area of 108 sq inches....
I'm going to use a fully movable elevator which means I'll have to mount the motor higher in the tube so that the pivot rod won't interfere with the motor mount. That should compensate for the assymetric drag of the vertical stab and maybe avoid any boost trim.

Did the wing drawing and frameup this morning, just about everything that could go wrong during building did, just a string of stupidity...Fortunately nothing that ruined the model, just my attitude.....

I played with the wing sweep and tail surfaces till I got something as large and swept as possible while still looking like a mig 19. I mid mounted the horiz stab for simplicity which meant I had to put the motor tube up above the carbon pivot rod. In fact this was helpful to offset the vertical stab drag by having the thrust line above the wing, at least that was my thought.

I inserted the motor mount backwards, realizing it just before the CA set, pulled it out and tried to clean up and redo it. Made the canopy from laminated foam and decided it was taking too long to shape by hand so used the belt sander and it grabbed...Continue Reading

I was trying to find a use for some 3" pro series tubing I had that was pre-cut to 21.5" long, I decided I wanted to try to do something similar to the Mig 21i Analog, which was a testbed for the TU-144 supersonic aircraft wing. I was limited to how much wing I could use by both the length of the tube and the spare depron I had left in large enough pieces. I made a nose insert using a paper cone soaked in CA glued to a .03 styrene disk with a shoulder made from some strips of body tube reduced in diameter to fit the inside.

Wingspan is 20", single 3mm carbon spar wtih elevon controls. Back edge of the wing has a cutout for the motor tube, and the vertical fin goes through the tube and glues to the top of the motor tube to help align it in place. Exposed wing area is approx 1.29 sq foot, so about 7.75 oz/sq foot wing loading compared to 5.5-6 for my kits.

Rail buttons are offset to the side so they don't get damaged by landing and I put some skids on the bottom of the tube. Did some quick indoor glide tests which gave me a conservative starting point for launch. Came out at 10 oz rtf with E-6 motor and battery and 3/4 oz of nose weight.

I did six test flights this afternoon, nice straight boost, glide was not bad, not as good as my kit planes since the wing is about 3/4 of the area of my kits and the nose is fairly draggy. It was fairly windy but did some nice near vertical touchdowns in a headwind.

I've been having a lot of fun flying these models, built with 6mm depron for surfaces, I built three with hand rolled double thickness 2mm depron tubes and one that uses a lightweight cardboard tube. The cardboard tube adds an extra 3/4 ounce but allowed a much straighter/rounder fuse. The tube is completely open except for the vertical fin tab, and the thrustline is about 1/2" above the top of the wing but parallel with the wing. The horzontal stab is parallel with the wing but just for looks.

The receiver and esc are just velcrod to the bottom inside of the tube near the front, the battery velcro's right at the front bottom of the inside of the tube. Air just flows straight through, wiring is taped down so it doesn't flop around. No nose weight was required.

I'm running these with grayson microjet V3 motors with 18 amp tbird esc with 800mah 3s eflite 35c batteries and apc 6x4e prop for 4 minutes of runtime. They fly great in high wind, will do high alpha slow flight, and are pretty neutral with a fairly axial roll. I re-worked the one I did in US markings to a pseudo german winter eastern front camo pattern, along with a Navy version in pax river test pilot school colors, and a huckebein camo version and a russian mig style version. Easy to hand launch with the keel and are just a lot of fun. I find myself flying these more and more. 21.5" long, 32" wingspan, 12.5-13.25 oz rtf with just two servo elevon control. They have a generic enough look to look good in a variety of schemes.

I used to do kits of these set up as rocket gliders, however I find myself now flying them just as pushers since they are so much fun.

I've been thinking about this one for a while, but didn't think I could get something flyable with the small wing the Pegasus launch vehicle has, and with the weights of components. However my recent learnings with my Mace I thought I could get something done under 11 oz with maybe a passable look and glide.

So, I scaled the wing up of course, took a crack at boost CG and moved things around in openrocket and my rc cg programs and decided on placement of components. The wing sits on sort of a platform, so I faked that with some little extensions in front and rear of the wing, with some reinforcing gussets below. Idea was to look like pegasus but be light. There seems to be a number of tail shapes and configurations in the photos I've seen, I chose one with a horizontal stab so it would match what I'm doing for the controls. Most of the photos show the fins at 120 degrees to each other, but the ones flown off of the B-52 I found were at 90 degrees to the vertical stab. Wing area is right at 1 sq foot.

Came in right at 10.75 oz, first test flight was a tiny bit pitchy on boost, but glide was much better than expected. I added 5 grams to the nose and it was very stable on boost, with a very decent glide, landing speed is faster than my others due simply to the wing loading but the drag is fairly low.

I've wanted to do an RC RG similar to a Mace Missile. The Mace used spoilers, not ailerons for roll and a high V t-tail for pitch. I was worried about stiffness and tail weight for a true T-tail, so wound up doing a mashup between the Mace wings, with alcm full flying surfaces and a stub T-tail to give it a mace-like look. I used black vinyl to simulate the engine intake on the bottom, as well as to shadow the tail to give a bit of a boat tail look when viewed from the side. Later Mace missiles had a dog-house or a shroud over the top rear to stiffen the tail so it wasn't a true boat tail anyway. I also built up a version with an ALCM engine intake on the top with the vertical tail, and moved the wing back an inch to remove the need for any nose weight. I haven't finished the alcm version, but the Mace came out at just under 12 ounces and flies very nicely. Diameter is 2.6" and length 38", wingspan 28.5" for both. The alcm version should be closer to 11.25 oz rtf due to the wing/CG movement.

I've wanted to try doing a full fuse RC rocket glider Mig 21 ever since I built a profile version a few years ago. I settled on using the same vertical stab/wing/tail of the profile and use a 2.6" bt-80 lightweight tubing I had. I found a used nose cone I had and chopped off the nose and trimmed about 3" off of that keeping just the tip. I then glued in a piece of 6mm depron to block the rear of the nose cone and glued the tip onto that to give the characteristic mig 21 look. A 28" long tube seemed about right for the body and I decided on a sort 12mm sandwich profile for the canopy and spine to reduce drag instead of a full turtledeck.

I used a rocketry program called openrocket to build a mass model putting in the weights of the components including electronics, tubing, depron etc, with an estimate of my required boost CG and what nose weight might be needed. It looked like one ounce of nose weight would do the trick and keep me at 12 oz rtf using a 24mm E-6 rocket motor which will boost that weight to around 500'. Wing area at just over 1 sq foot is about half of my other rc rocket gliders so glide will be steeper, but not as steep as my bomarc which weighs closer to 14 ounces rtf with a similar wing and much more draggy design.

I decided to use the tab for the vertical stab that goes through the body tube to hold the motor mount in place, and to use full flying tail surfaces since that was very easy to do by putting a simple aluminum pivot tube...Continue Reading
