PhracturedBlue: Over at, we've been trying to figure out how to lower the bar of entry to supporting more protocols. We've got support for 17 different protocols now (and many more variants of those). Unfortunately, there are 4 different RF chips that are used to support those, and installing all 4 into a single Tx can be challenging. I started with the 'MultiMod' board which was simply a smart-switch to allow using 4 pins from the TX to control 4 different SPI boards. But this is large and cumbersome to work with.

Recently, I was spurred to try to develop a better solution. What I came up with was the 'UniversalTx' board. It consists of 4 RF transceiver chips, a 4:1 RF multiplexer, a single PA/LNA, and an STM32 to drive it. Information on the deisgn process can be found here:

The idea is that this board can be used in 3 different ways:
1) It can be used as a 'smart-switch' like the MultiMod board. In this case, it is a drop-in replacement for the 10-pin Devo transceiver board. (By drop-in, I mean when running Deviation firmware) to provide support for all 17 protocols
2) It can be placed into a JR-Module housing (using the 5-pin header) and act as a UART-SPI bridge to allow a custom firmware (for instance on a Taranis) to provide support for all 17 protocols
3) It can act as a true JR module, using PPM->SPI bridge...Continue Reading
