It's been a very busy summer...but lots of fun!

Is there anything better in this hobby than scoring amazing deals and even freebies from local modelers and friends? Yes, enjoying those old models with friends!

In my case, most folks are just thrilled that someone is willing to invest time and energy into making these old models airworthy, and enjoyed again. That was my mission this summer and the result has been very rewarding. Some aircraft required restoration and others were almost ready to fly.

There's a nice mix of 1/4 scale gas, vintage glow/nitro, electric powered aircraft, sailplanes and vintage kits. All have been flown except the PT-19 and the sailplanes. Currently, my favorite to fly is the Balsa USA 1/4 scale Piper J-3 Cub with Zenoah G23 gas engine. It took about two weeks to get it refreshed and upgraded. It's a sweetheart to fly and looks amazing in the air!

There are a number of vintage fun-fly gatherings in the works with models of all shapes and sizes. I'm looking forward to an exciting time, sharing a passion with great friends.

Yesterday, I adopted an old Kyosho Wingmaster 10 Ultralight. The model has been at the top of my bucket list for 30+ years, so a full restoration will be accomplished over the next month or so.

The plan is to fly this classic and capture flights on video. I've never seen one fly, so this will be a treat!

First thing to go is that huge spinner. Current restoration checklist items: Clean the aluminum airframe, replace wing struts, replace pushrod guides, minor rudder repair, repaint red on wing and stabs and thoroughly clean/run the Magnum .15 engine.

Keep the classics in the air!

Best,
Tony

Two years ago, I started building an Ace R/C .049 Grasshopper but was easily distracted (focus man!) on a few other projects. On Thursday, after finding the missing horizontal stabilizer, I pumped the brakes on the Herr Cherokee and Simple Duster and committed to finishing the Grasshopper. I decided to build it stock and will fly it with a Cox .049 QRC engine. After a 10 hour build session until 1:30am this morning, she's a little closer to flight.

This morning, I had the rare privilege to hold and photograph Carl Goldberg's personal Gentle Lady. Yes, this bird was built and flown by Carl Goldberg...one of my model aviation heroes! The Gentle Lady debuted back in 1980.

Here's a short film I think many of you will enjoy! Our dear friend Tony Naccarato was the technical advisor and responsible for gathering all the Cox P-51s control line models used in the film. Tony is also shown flying a Cox P-51 in the park and our local hobby shop (Smith Brother's Hobby Center) is also featured.

Freewing 90mm F-4D Phantom II

The time has come! Developed in tandem alongside last summer’s Project Virtue (80mm A-4 Skyhawk), Project Bond was our codename for Freewing’s first F-4 Phantom. With the 64mm and 80mm series stocked with recent aircraft from the Vietnam era, we set out to bring it all home with a big 90mm F-4. We know many of us have been waiting for the venerable Rhino to get the proper Motion RC treatment, and we know you’ll enjoy flying the final result!

OVERVIEW
Aviation enthusiasts have long loved the F-4 Phantom, and Freewing and Motion RC are extremely proud to introduce our 90mm Super Scale Series rendition of this ultimate warfighter! For more than 50 years, the F-4 Phantom delivered the versatile capabilities required of an all-weather frontline supersonic interceptor, fighter-bomber, SEAD, and reconnaissance platform. Less than a year after its retirement from US military service, keep the F-4 Phantom flying in your RC fleet!

DESIGN
RC fans have consistently requested a large F-4 in true PNP format that performs excellently out of the box without endless modifications. We developed this F-4 to deliver reliability, durability, and performance from your very first flight, supported by Freewing’s parts availability and Motion RC’s customer service should you ever need it. We can also confidently state that dependable grass operation is a hallmark of the Freewing 90mm F-4. With its wide stance, tall main tires, Oleo suspension nose strut and...Continue Reading
