I wanted a disk wing model in my fleet, and tried to put as much star trek shape/decoration into it but still make it flyable as an R/C rocket glider. The star trek ships do not lend themselves to rear mounted motors as the disk and cg requirements are very far forward.

The disk is 19" and gives a much larger area than it visually looks, glide is quite good for the shape of the model. The deflector dish is the end of the nose cone I cut off, reverse and glue back in, the antenna is a piece of spare 3mm carbon rod I rounded off and drilled/glued into the dish. Dish is colored with gold sharpie pen, the warp engine front is tamiya acrylic orange brushed on, the decals here were hand cut but stickershock has the patterns now. Length is 47", disk is 19", 2.6" diameter, weight 11.25 oz rtf using a 24mm E-6 rocket motor. Wing is 6mm depron, warp motor is 9mm depron with 6mm depron laminated on both sides of the engine to allow some rounding to be done for visual effect. The disk decoration is simply a sharpie pen taped to a compass, for the larger circles I taped chop sticks to my compass to extend the legs and then taped the sharpie to one of the legs. The model required a bit of down trim for boost due to the draggy tail and high mounted wing, but that was it.

The day was very clear as was the moon, so I intentionally steered during boost to set up for a moon crossing which timed out great with the theme music.

DustOff Flight #3 in Expert Mode with Wind on the ground of 6-8mph (10-13kph) and I'm guessing 12-16mph (19-26kph) approx. 20 feet up.
I wish I could take off from the ground with this Plane but it's too rough here and it noses over.
It's a bit of a handful in this much Wind and the Wind got strong enough at one point where I could barely turn it back into the Wind ;-)

x440 was purchased us ed in good condition with a brushed geared 480 and no ESC

Proposed :

motor is an Axi 2820-10
40 -60 amp ESC with brake
12/6 folder
3-4 S 2200 Graphene lipo
2.4 Spektrum 6 ch RX
DX9 TX

Wings are approx 170-180 grams

Approx weight of proposed items are 749 grams
Total RTF 929 grams or 32 oz

My concern is that there will not be enough nose weight compared to the original motor and nicad cells.

However a preliminary check shows that this will not be a problem with a 2200 4S Graphene pack or a smaller lighter 1000 3 or4S pack.

First off, I learned how to do this from reading Kallend's blog. I am in no way trying to take credit for his work. I am simply trying to help other people out so they better understand how to get this whole thing working. When I read through his blog for the first time, I had many questions and didn't understand some things. The purpose of this guide is to help those who were like myself get the afterburner unit installed successfully.

Please check out Kallend's blog, since he deserves the original credits for this. He also offers a more advanced version of this afterburner that runs off an arduino board that can flicker. I will not be covering that in this guide. This guide will cover the basic, bare-bones LED afterburner setup.

So, let's start off with the basics. Here's what you will need to get started..

Preamble:
This guide assumes you have basic soldering skills. If you do not, then I don't recommend going any further until you do. There's plenty of guides on soldering on Youtube. Go watch those and get some practice and come back when you're ready. This guide will show you how to setup and get your LED unit...Continue Reading

How do i reattach antenna to receiver ? Its snapped at the solder point. I have soldered it back , messily as im a beginner , but its definitely connected.

I read a thread on here and i quote ''configuration .. is critical'' so is there a specific way ? All wires look the same in the casing theyre jus thin copper ones , about 5 or 6 of em.

Saw an interesting way of hot wiring a wing from a Jim Thompson's video. He hot glues down foam sheets to hot wire ribs, then skins them with fiberglass sheets. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...ailplane-build
So I thought. I want to try to do something like this. When RC Foam sold out I bought a lot of boxes of Depron. I want to start with a small light weight flying wing (of course) with a Spekrum UMX brick. The wing skins will be 1mm Depron. Has anyone have experienced thinning out BSI Foam-Cure with denatured alcohol.

Now to start on templates.

I have a passion for Large Aircraft models. They say that size does not matter. Ohhh yes it does. Go Big or Go home is what I say to that. You are either going ALL THE WAY, or not at all. I like Fighter Jets and Helicopters. Just something about the shape and form. This is my first post. Not really sure how to add the photos. Hopefully they come out okay.

Regards,

Herman

I put a picture of the electronics I was wondering if there is anything else I would need to fly it. I will need batteries and I will need a remote for it if you can help me with that to figure out what I need. i have photos of the inside of the airplane it won't let me upload it so contact me if you are willing to help. This is my mini-project that I just started early this year. But since we're shut inside with COVID-19, I've finally made a return to the project after some 7 years, haha.

This is a Traxxas Stampede 2WD with the Traxxas brushless system. The shocks are (I think) Axial, I got them very long ago from a friend. The cage/body panels are off a Vaterra Twin Hammers that I custom painted. The wheels & tires are also Vaterra, not sure of the model names.

I have some aluminum set aside to make a new hood panel, but thanks to this pandemic right now, the weld school I'm at is completely shut down, so I'll have to make those later. Other than that, I'd like to either buy or make a wing, and get some new oil in the shocks.

April first 2020 and a chance to get outside into the sunshine with a predicted 10mph wind from the north.
I have not tried to fly this direction with wind this light ,but out I went..full sunshine and a balmy 46 degrees ..

I flew the Bug first,I had built a couple of them a half a dozen years ago and had not flown them on a real hill, just tossed them around sloping hay bales a in a friends field .

The wind felt stronger than the predicted 10 , I was still using my transmitter glove { was glad I did, when clouds passed over , my hands were toasty warm inside }
Since I had not flown this in ages and was now on a new transmitter {This is a rudder/ elevator ship, and I fly rudder on the left stick } Do I launch with my left hand and keep my finger on the elevator stick .
Or launch with my right hand and have my finger on the rudder stick.
I launched with my left betting on needing elevator control first,as it turned out the elevator was not too far off and the wind turned her before I could get my left hand inside the glove...she set down with out damage about 20 feet away {shows why I am not a gambling man }
Next launch with my{ right hand } was no problem, flew her around and trimmed her out ,seemed a little tail heavy with a bit of a tuck once so I ,landed and added some lead to the nose .
Out again and tooled around for the next 20 minutes - Great fun , something this light shouldn't be able to handle this much wind

Time for the HK 1M dlg,I had...Continue Reading
