Obviously a lot more than a few tweeks happened. The mane event was moving the speed buttons to the sides & the power button to the back. The button spacing was dictated by mechanical clearance rather than ergonomics.

This would be a lot easier with tact buttons, but the lion kingdom insisted on something more durable. These MHPS buttons could have gone down to 6mm per side without a major increase in cost, but the lion kingdom wanted to finish. Despite every effort, hot gluing all the hot glued bits is still a buster. What's needed is a fine pointed hot glue gun.

There's some debate about whether the pinky grip should go all the way across. The 2 halves don't line up, making it look awful.

Too bad there isn't any more investment in lion machine interfaces. They all standardized on the game pad, 20 years ago. There were a few voice, gesture startups, 10 years ago.

I love the WL Toys 144001 1/14 scale RC Buggy and have written a lot of articles on tuning and upgrading it here. It is inexpensive and runs well stock or is easily upgraded to brushless power which offers better speed and acceleration as well as battery life. But how does it compare against the car on which is was based, the LC racing EMB series on which the 144001 was (let's face it) copied from?

So surely you know by now that the 144001 is a budget copy of the LC racing EMB-1 but with a bigger brushless 550 motor and integrated ESC/receiver and no slipper clutch. This means that WL Toys have been able to grab a big slice of the popular RC car market at a price point of $70-80 for the 144001 vs $200ish for the LC racing equivalent. But this is clearly not a fair comparison so what if you take the brushless upgraded 144001 with a raft of replacement parts, tally up the cost and then compare? Would you still buy the 144001 to upgrade or would you just got straight for the LC racing? I'll break this down by price and performance in order to give you the clearest information to make this decision for yourself and my opinion I what I would (and did) do.

Micro Tundra Low and Slow (5 min 57 sec)

Still wasting time on the elevator
Once the elevator is set in stone , I can play with my rates and then throw the Micro Tundra around a little .

Oh yeah , I did a nice landing this morning .

Just stayed on the power till I was almost on the ground and then when a few inches off the ground I cut power and the MT settled almost perfectly .

Halloa RC people

a while back I did a review of the (then new) ISDT Q6 Nano charger which has since then been my "field charger"..
That does NOT mean however that it's at all perfect :P

So I wanted to try it's slightly bigger brother.. the Q8 to see how much more you get for the extra $$

And I think it was wurth a video in case you are looking for a handy charger to stick into your backpack...

I am new to having a blog, although I have been in RCGROUPS since 2006.

For many years, I have administrated a Forum for my local RC Club. That Forum is now being wound down.

There are a number of articles which I, and (a very few) others, have placed in there over the years. I would like to preserve and make these available to others, both in my Club and perhaps elsewhere. We also have a number of pictures and links to YouTube and Vimeo videos to be preserved.

I hope that this is not only appropriate but also of interest and value to some others. This hobby is addictive, sometimes frustrating but always enjoyable. I like helping and sharing ideas with like-minded individuals.

I am a retired Systems Engineer (B.A.Sc., Mechanical Engineering, 1970 - i.e., an old guy) who spends a great deal of his time creating, building and flying RC models of various kinds and sizes. I have been doing this for over 40 years, as well as having about 20 years (800 hours) of flying and instructing in full scale gliders. My interests transferred to my son, who is a production test pilot for a major aerospace firm as well as an RC modeller of some 35 years, having soloed at age 7, instructing a couple of years later.

I live on a large island, at a location called Preston Cove, ours being the only dwelling on that large bay. I can walk out my door, down to the water (or ice) and fly or walk out into the front yard to fly small things and dodge trees. No nearby neighbours to annoy! However, I get the most out of travelling to our Club of 80 to 100 Members of all shapes and sizes and ages for good flying and comaraderie, any day of the week and throughout the year.

I refer to the mess wherein I build and repair models as my Cave. (My patient wife has alternate names for it.)

Hence the Cave on the Cove.

XK A160 J3 Low and Slow (5 min 16 sec)

Flying the J3 as slow as I dare ..
After the flight the battery still had 75% , so you know it was a low throttle flight .

I trimmed the LE Slats at the wing tips .. I am not sure , but they may have been affecting the Ailerons ( Making it harder to bank / turn )
J3 feels much better after the Slats being trimmed .

It flies slow .. Where was the death spiral ? I even stalled it , and you can hardly tell the J3 stalled .
I put the blame on the flight control board , because without it . ( There is no death spiral and stalls are so gentle they are hard to notice )

After my first video... knew there was a problem
because the plane was at the far top of the video,
and disappearing sometimes because the camera
was not aimed high enough. Shown is my 20 degree
riser block solution for keeping the model centered
in the video frame.

Mobius shows a hat rig on their website
without an angled visor mount.

So, after a few tries, I found a 20 degree
wood block, through bolted to the Mobius
mounting plate worked best for me.

Hundreds of videos later and this is my current
preferred setup.

The Mini was added using velcro. I can fly
the Mini on the plane or shoot a backup video
from the hat. The settings can be changed in each.
You could have the mini doing time lapse,
wide angle, zoom, or other settings.

All hats/visors fit differently so best to
calculate each one separately.

I've always wanted a small scale Spitfire, and finally had the bright idea to build one using the guts of my trashed UMX Yak-54 180.

Wouldn't seem to take too much work to create a profile Spitfire of the right scale and transfer the guts of the Yak-54.
Biggest complexity, I think, might be turning off the AS3X, or perhaps if I orient things correctly in the Spitfire it wouldn't make a difference.
Time will tell.

Time to dig out the Yak, take some measurements, and draw up a profile Spitfire.
Unless, of course, my EZ power plant shows up tomorrow, then all bets are off.

The EZ power plant did show up, so this project was shelved for a few weeks while I built the EZ F7F.
But I'm back on it now, and have created Phoenix models of both the Yak and the profile Spitfire to compare the flying characteristics.
Based on that, the Spitfire seems to fly fine at the same wingspan and weight as the Yak.
Considering making it a bit bigger, though, to give it more presence in the air. Need to give this more thought.
Next step is to generate plans for the Spitfire and then carefully transmogrify the Yak.

UMX YAK 54 vs PROFILE SPITFIRE (1 min 27 sec)
