Original crystal-controlled radio goes back in this update. Futaba 3PM-FM, R133F 75Mhz receiver using channel 72FM crystal set. 12in. antenna pipe gets its own mounting bracket. These images show the purpose 1/8in gap between the frame rails that allowed for attaching various mounting platforms while allowing adjustability for weight balance.

Receiver also gets a Novak 'Glitch Buster' from archive storage. Without it, battery voltage near the end of a run would draw down below critical need for steering servo. Glitch Buster just enough to prevent that.

Steering servo is a HiTec micro metal gear - original install still in place. Servo saver is a New Era item and part of the steering system.

Original install had velcro receiver mounting. Double side tape for this install since it is primarily a static display resto. Cheers. Arnold

I've previously written about the Sperry Messenger however given the airplanes unique story, I chose to give it a slightly deeper dive.

Sperry M-1 Messenger: Since an original Sperry hasn’t flown anytime in recent history and it’s begun to fade from a lot of memories, however in its day it was a very relevant airplane.

The Sperry Messenger first flew in 1921. A critical time for airplane development. WWI had just ended and it was clear that airplanes had a future in war. The race for aviation development was on. The Messenger hit the market with just the right recipe at just the right time. It was simplistic and cheap as well as a very good performer for its era being powered by a Lawrance 3 cylinder radial of 60hp.

The airplane was designed by the capable hands of Alfred Verville on commission for the Army Engineering Division at McCook Airfield in Dayton Ohio. The concept of the design was to be a small runabout that could deliver messages similar to a military motorcycle courier. This led to the naming of the new M designation in military aircraft for Messenger. A designation that only the Sperry ever carried. Officially called the Engineering Division M-1, the design was contracted to the brand new Lawrence Sperry Aircraft Company from Farmingdale, Long Island, New York.

Sperry delivered the designated prototypes for testing and satisfied with the results, the engineering division ordered 5 production examples. A total of four more contracts were issued...Continue Reading

From a just-received AMA email:
Quote:
As AMA anticipated, the FAA has announced they are extending the Remote ID enforcement date by six months. Operators now have until March 16, 2024 before they will have to comply with the rule. This extension provides the FAA more time to approve FRIA applications and manufacturers the time for production of broadcast modules. For the FAA’s full statement on the extension, click here.
It was September 16, 2023, now it's March 16, 2024.

Well - its not the lightest ASW28 flying - and probably not the straightest/smoothest - but its flying and I am enjoying it!

I just wanted to share a couple photos - and see if anyone else is still flying one of these kits!? I bought this a few years ago - but finally got around to building it and now flying it. Its been 30 years since I last flew a sailplane - sooo.... having to get use to the slower/wider lofting turns.

Mods include: Ez removable canopy - via spring pin
Longer/wider control surface - the original looked more like little spoilers rather than control surfaces.... however I used .020" Polystyrene - top and bottom - and it added a lot of weight. I think if I could do it again I would have just done one side - probably the top. If that created a little drag - I would still be ok with that - I'm not looking for all out speed.
Tinted Canopy
Built-in Wing servo lead connectors
Robart Pin Hinges on all control surfaces

Its a slightly bigger motor, bigger prop flying on 2200mAh 3S.

My first Blog post here - sooo... I'm not exactly sure how to do this - so I'll start with this! Thanks for taking a look.

I know a few people talk about the CG being a problem - but this plane was spot on. (probably because of all my control surfaces additions)

Here's my configuration for a Spektrum Smart AS3X/SAFE receiver in the E-flite 1.5m Air Tractor.

1. There are three Flight Modes (FM). FM1 is SAFE mode with self-leveling and bank/pitch limiting, FM2 is AS3X only, and FM3 is Gyro off.
2. All AS3X and SAFE mode gains are set to Fixed. No Gain Channel has been selected. Heading Hold and Panic mode are disabled.
3. The AS3X gains in FM1 and FM2 are set to 20% for roll, 40% for pitch, and 60% for yaw.
4. The SAFE mode gains in FM1 are set to 30% for roll and 50% for pitch.
5. The SAFE mode angle limits are set to 70° of bank to the left and right, 40° nose down, and 50° nose up.
6. The attitude trim for roll is 0 degrees. The attitude trim for pitch is 2° nose up.
7. The High Throttle-to-Pitch mix starts at 80% of throttle and increases to an angle of 8° nose up at full throttle.
8. The Low Throttle-to-Pitch mix starts at 30% of throttle and increases to an angle of 12° nose down at idle.
9. The flight mode channel is set to channel 9. If your transmitter has fewer channels, move it to an unused channel.
10. The receiver orientation is set to "Label toward the Sky", Pins toward the Nose".

Notes:
1. SAFE mode requires 100% travel on the aileron and elevator channels in order to work correctly.
2. Verify that the transmitter sticks move the control surfaces in the proper direction.
3. Verify that the gyro moves the control surfaces in the proper direction by tilting the plane 45° left, right, nose down, and nose up.
4. Use at your own risk! Since I'm not there, I have no control over what might happen.

I picked up a pre owned TC 1700MM but the nose gear wasn't working properly. I have managed to get it back together however can't figure out how to get the nosewheel attached to the servo so it turns with the rudder. Does anybody have info on how to get this hooked up properly or any pictures? I would appreciate it.

Here’s the newest addition to my collection. A Tamiya Bruiser (2012 re-released edition). I went completely stock, and went with the recommended Tamiya paint colors as well. I added some interior parts from Axial, custom made some door cards, and used Cortney ‘Cover Girl’ Creigor as my driver. I spent 16 hours on the paint alone, so this will be a soft runner for sure.
