If you like stunt, sport, pattern models. This plane is the inspiration for the Avatar 40 design (see previous post). Same wing loading... etc.

I ran across a scratch build model online that I recognized. Its name is the Avatar. It is a .40 cu. in. (glow engine) sized acrobatic/stunt/pattern plane. The reason I recognized it is because I purchased the full size plans from RC Modeler Magazine in 1991 and I had plans to build it and fly it. Oh well my plans got changed. Zoom up to today (11-22-2023) and I found the plans right where I left them (in a mail tube, in the garage.... see photos)...Continue Reading

Working on mounting my K&B 40 in my Sportster 40. It's coming along nicely. I noticed I do not have any foam around the tank. I plan to fix that. I am planning to exchange the plastic spinner for an aluminum spinner. I still need to add the clunk line fuel pick up. I also need to bend the fuel feeder line upwards towards the top of the fuel tank. Need to drill and tap the nylon engine mount to accept the engine mounting screws (4-40 cap screws of course). Need to make sure the throttle push rod is up to the task (it is very old). Need to test run the engine on my test stand.

Well I am getting the modeling itch again. I knew it would happen sooner or later. Will start digging into my modeling junk tomorrow and see what I come up with. First I will sort through things and see where I stand. Not sure yet what I will actually work on. Need to just submerge myself in it and see where my mind goes.

Continuing with my test stand build. It may take forever, or I may even never finish. To me it does not matter. It is just a hobby. No goals. No timeclock. No one to impress but myself.

I am pretty happy with the precision of the mounting holes I drilled in the 2"x12" wood plank. I used a Dremel tool hobby-drill-press that I purchased 50 years ago. It provided more than enough accuracy for this application. For practical purposes the mounting holes are right on the money.

I am receiving the M5 screws tomorrow. I will be using a servo to control the engine throttle

08-14-22: Added some more photos to show the throttle control. There was a mechanical conflict between the cap-screw and the clevis. Made some adjustment and got it fixed

This Sportster has been hanging around my house for 40 years. I bought it new in the box in 1982. It was a Great Planes Balsa Kit. It was 90% complete in the year 1995 when it was wrecked. It remained wrecked for about 15 years. I have now rebuilt the wing to the point of 85%. The covering, servo's, and landing gear are soon to follow.

Bought an old K&B model engine. Circa 1970. It is very old, BUT it is new in the box

Did some model airplane things today. Put together a few more pieces of my engine test stand. It is a little on the heavy side, but there is nothing wrong with that. I would rather error on the heavy side than the lightweight side when dealing with a screaming model engine.

I am happy with this so far. I do foresee an exhaust accumulation area. Will need to address that, so that clean-up is easy

I will fix it so that it comes apart quickly and easily

I purchased the tank holder and engine holder but the wood and metal saw horses I had around the house.

Will take some more photos earlier in the day. The light was not right. It gets away fast.

Working on repairing this old Sportster. It is a balsa model from way back in time. It is a glow engine model. I am old school and I like it

I have been to this flying field. I have met with this group. Great bunch of guys in my opinion. They are in Rembert SC. They are having a fly-in. It will be in April.

This is how we did it 40 years ago. I am very nostalgic. I am not in this hobby to impress but rather for my personal entertainment. Here I have put together a flight box, starter, fuel pump, etc, like they did way back in time. The starter switch was worn out and broken. (I have information on new switches available from the Sullivan company). The tote box is a 1982 Carl Goldberg Super Tote. I was thinking that design-wise they put the drawers on the wrong side and I just now noticed that I actually built it backwards

I feel like a beginner. A very old beginner. I am a come-back. I am returning to the hobby. Yes I am old school and old style. Back in the day, we use to kit-build in the winter and fly in the summer. I have no time clock with my hobbies so I am on no ones schedule but my own. I hear people say "glow" is dead. Frankly it does not matter to me that it is perceived as dead. I do what I like. Always have. Always will.

Currently:

I am getting my field equipment ready to test some engines. (.29 cu.in. / .45 cu.in. / .61 cu. in.)

My direction:

Get my field box ready and my engines running. Join the local club and fly my .40 Sportster with a Spectrum Transmitter. Buy an ARF and fly my OS .60 cu. in. SF Max. Buy a Saito .82 cu. in. four-cycle. Break it in.

I though I would start this thread to share information as time passes. Always happy to hear from others (regardless of age or level).

I always enjoyed R/C and planning for many more good years. I never made it to the "Big Time" in the hobby. WAY too many other things in my life for that. It is what you make it.
