I have always wanted to attach a video camera to my Super Cub, but I could never decide on which keychain cam to buy. Long story short, I decided to tape a phone to it. It is a small android phone. I taped it to the plane with the camera pointed down, right under the battery box. It took 4 quarters taped under the tail to balance it! Anyway, I was quite nervous at launch: I knew that it was all or nothing! Luckily, it only dropped two feet before pulling up and away from the ground (hand launch). I ended up getting over 10 minutes of flight time, even with the added weight. The only thing that was bad about the whole thing was the speed in which it came in for a landing. I didn't think about it beforehand, but the added weight made for a higher stall speed: I had to keep the power on until I was a few feet off of the ground. I should have kept it on until I touched down: it dropped, hitting the ground on the gear, but then the nose hit the ground, flipping the plane over. The only damage was bent landing gear. Not like that hasn't happened before!
The video was of questionable quality, but only because I used a crappy class-2 micro SD card. Ultimately, it was just a successful test of whether the SC would fly with the camera attached.
That's it. That's all there is.
Peace

I think I figured something out. It's definitely not earth-shattering news, but I thought it was cool.
So, there I was, flying my Super Cub around my property, and my mind began to wander a bit. See, something that has been troubling me for some time is the plethora of people who seem to crash their cubs. That, and those who have trouble landing them. It occurred to me that some, perhaps even most, of the people who crash their cubs are at RC clubs. Could the cause be not necessarily the pilot, but maybe the others at the club? The HZ Super Cub is probably the most popular trainer, and so is most likely flown by beginners. Therefore, the logical conclusion is that they are going to be crashed. However, I am not talking about pilot error, I am talking about nervous noob pilots crashing because they are overly conscious of those spectating. Perhaps even heckling. I know it can be nerve racking flying in front of an audience: my worst wreck happened in front of several friends and family members. While it was pilot error on my part, the nerves may have led to the error.
Next is landing. Yes, I know that the HZ Super Cub is much easier to land than the bigger planes, but perhaps some of those who have difficulty is because they are flying at a club and can't practice landings four or five times in a single battery. I can't say for certain, but it makes sense. From what I have read, when flying at a club, most people will stay up for most of the battery, landing only when...Continue Reading

Wind wind wind! I hate it! Out of the last six days, five of them have all had 20 plus mile per hour winds. One day, get this: winds at 3 MPH, with gusts of 19. The gods of RC aircraft are angry and must be appeased! We must all buy a new ultra-micro aircraft, and then fly it in winds that are too great! Perhaps this virgin aircraft sacrifice will sate the RC gods anger.
OK, it's out of my system. Perhaps tomorrow, my friends, perhaps tomorrow.
On another note, I've been thinking. I know, I know. My wife was amazed as well...

So what if I put my hinges on the same side as the servo? Was it really a big deal that I put them all on the bottom? Did I seriously screw up my Super Cub? These questions have plagued my mind since I finished the aileron mod. Yes it has better overall control, but every pic I have seen has the hinges on top and the servo on the bottom. It likes to randomly drop a wing tip, but that could be because of the wind. Every time I've flown it since the mod was finished has been windy. Heck, even the maiden flight had winds of 5 to 8 MPH. I don't know...I guess I shouldn't worry about it. All I've had to add is two servos. I'm still getting 10 minute flight times on the stock equipment (DSM Model). For anyone who is wondering, the DSM rx/esc is compatible with standard 3-wire servos.
I have also decided to keep a flight log. I don't know, it just seems right.
Peace...

Hello all. I'm a second-year resident in the school of RC aircraft (please note: this is not a real school!).
My first plane was a HZ Champ. It took it's licks while teaching me the fundamentals of flight. Next came the HZ Super Cub. That transition was terrifying: I was completely unprepared for the speed difference between the two! My first landing was particularly scary. Next was Phoenix flight simulator. After flying on the sim for a bit, the Super Cub just seemed sluggish in the air. Without much forethought, I went out and got an e-flite UMX Extra 300 (as my first 4 channel plane), along with a DX-8. A few days later, I purchased an MQX quadrocopter. Now, just a few days ago, I finished an aileron mod for my Super Cub.
It has been quite a ride so far. Many, many crashes with the Champ led to only a few with the Super Cub. In fact, the worst with the SC has been (so far, knock on wood) a wingtip stall at about twenty feet (6+ meters) of altitude while gliding dead stick. Lesson learned. It cost me a cowl, prop, and some 2" packing tape. Not much and could have been worse. Speaking of tape, my Champ is probably (at least) 25% tape... On to the extra, in my first few flights I tore off a wing. It is one flimsy [beep] plane! HoweHowever, the crash was simply a matter of getting ahead of myself, getting too anxious with the D/R switches. I just couldn't resist switching it to full 3-D. The MQX is now broken, it being my first helicopter-type aircraft. That's what...Continue Reading
