So I've been puttering along with my free time at work and have started an all foam sloper. I built my self a foam cutter with power supply, found some drawings online, put them into sketchup, bought some foam on kijiji and off I went. The wing span is 60" and the fuse is 39.75" long. I have cut my tail feathers out of 4mm corroplast, and plan on using balsa full span TE flapperons. I'm aiming for a fusion of PSS and VTPR of a weight in and around 500 - 600 grams. All of this has been inspired by Steve "surfimp" Le fish. Now, my build progress has been slow due to snail mail and what not. But, lately I've been making some good head way on the fuse. The wings, on the other hand, are a different story. Last week I basically cut 2 full wings with only half a usable one. I got very up set that I wasted a bunch of foam and time and I was quickly discouraged. But, that lead to good progress on my fuse. Not too much left on her for major steps now. It's coming along quite well for my first no plan all foam sloper. There won't be an update till next week as I'm preparing for a move and I'm off for 5 days now. Till then people...

So I've decided to venture into foam slope gliders from scratch no less. I have been wanting a foam hot wire for quite awhile now. So, being on a budget I hit the old interwebs and look into a DIY foam cutter. Gathered up a comp power supply and some other things I could scavenge, and placed an order on eBay. $18 dollars spent and a few hours later I had a foam cutting bow with a power supply push 24 volts @ 4.5 amps threw a 40 inch long 0.020 SS lockwire. Works like a hot knife threw butter . With my cutter taken care of I moved on to what kind of plane I wanted, so I based what I wanted on the "Le fish." Loved the aerobatic side of it and how people are building it super light as well. I wasn't quite sold on her look though. So, loving war birds I decided on the Nakajima B5N "Kate" using the SB96V airfoil Le fish uses and I'm going to build it I'm a similar style as Le fish. Aiming for a 600 - 700 grams with a 60" span and 10" cord @ the root. The fuse is coming in @ 39.5" in length. She should fly in 15 - 20 kph @ minimum, which seems to be our average wind here in Calgary. As of right now I only have templates and a practice cut on an airfoil. more to come as it unfolds, hopefully this weekend.
