This weekend brought some unexpected winds. We had a direct East wind of about 10-12mph. Any other time, and this would have just been a "meh" Saturday. But a decent wind coming straight in brought a decent crowd up top.
Actually, considering the wind was only 10mph it was fantastic day.

Our first weekend back from The Northwest. Almost didn't want to go to the hill. I was used to awesome scenery, alpine flying, cool air, wineries, and micro breweries. This Saturday on the hill was brutally warm and humid. There actually was not a drop of wind. Fortunately I arrived late and didn't even break a plane out. I got a few pics of winching and an electric and called it a day.

For our final full day in the NorthWest, Friday, we got up early and headed to Tri-Cities and Eagle Butte. The boys wanted to fly at one of the premier slopeing sites and Eagle fits the bill. We reached Eagle just after noon. When we arrived Creg (bobbyjack) was already there flying his Tango and Pike Perfect. Weather reports showed Tri-Cities at 13-18mph reaching 30mph by nightfall. We easily had 20mph over the afternoon, with occasional “dropouts” or dead air when clouds passed over. Unfortunately we lost 2 more aircraft by days end. DJ was flying Andrew’s Mini Vector during a “dropout” and he ended up outlanding in the fields below. The Mini Vector’s fuse was pretty broken up. Tom had Elevon flutter on his Gulp and lost it on the front side. We searched and searched but we couldn’t find it (if anyone finds a red and yellow Gulp at Eagle, send me a PM). Otherwise it was a great visit to Eagle. We headed back to Hood River just before 5PM. This allowed us to hit the Thai house restaurant in upper Hood before it closed and also the ice cream shop across the street .

After flying all the slopes around hood, we decided to revisit Lumber on Thursday. Several members of the group, who shall remain unnamed, preferred not to make the walk into the Lumber site. But the rest of us walked in and enjoyed the great views above the upper Hood River. We had some fantastic formation flying with our UberMoths and Gulps. Some of the pumps and half pipes were outrageous. The only tragedy of the day was Jose’s loss of our remaining Rifle to a large pine tree. We closed out the day by venturing down to the Hood River waterfront to the Pfriem brewery and pub. Tomorrow we plan to head to Eagle Butte for some world class slopeing.

Day 6 was for our final Hood River area slope, Grayback mountain. After a late start, Winch Doc met up with us in Hood River and we headed across the Hood River Bridge. After a brief supply stop in Klickitat we climbed up toward Grayback mountain. We arrived somewhere after 1pm and tried to fly from our usual spot near the fence. The air was very light and no one dared fly, unless they had an electric (Larry). As the temps rose and the sun beat on us, we found a better slope site about 500’ South of our usual area. It also had the benefit have having a large pine tree near the slope. We setup camp there for the day. The air turned great after about 3pm. The lift bubbled up out of the valley and we flew until 7pm, at that point we headed out via Glenwood and reached Hood about 8:45pm. The day would have been uneventful except for the fact that DJ lost his Jart to the wind gods just before we left. It seems we lose a plane every year to Grayback.

Today was a bust. No wind. We headed out to Mount Hood Lodge. Had lunch and drove back down. Then we headed over to Rowena hoping for an East wind that never appeared. Tomorrow we hope to hit Grayback. Winch Doc is supposed to join up with us at Hood River and join us there.

Monday, Day 4, we decided to try Bald Butte out. As usual, the ride up to the top and back down were exciting. If possible, the road was worse than before. Once on top we were a little dismayed to find the lift very spotty. By 3pm we were willing to call it a day and head home. Luckily the lift gods had other ideas and suddenly the sky was alive. It was mainly thermal or alpine lift. We flew it until our retinas were getting burned out by the evening sun.
We plan to head to Grayback tomorrow, Tuesday, but the wind forecast is not looking good. It could end up being a “tourist day”.

Sunday placed us at Klickitat. As usual, great lift coming up the Klickitat valley. Flying became treacherous about 3pm because of a wind shift. In spite of this, we packed a lot of flying in between 11am and 3pm.
After 4pm, we decided to call it a day and headed toward Marynoll. We stopped for some pictures of the Stonehenge re-creation/memorial and then headed back to our “home”of Mt Hood and dinner at the Mesquitery.
On to Bald Butte tomorrow!

The Pompano Hill crew has finally reached Hood River for our 2013 trek to the NorthWest. Note the Blog starts with Day 2, Day 1 was a transit day.
Day 2 found us at Lumber to Fly with Mike Stubbs and his crew for the annual Retina Burner. We split into two groups. Four of us went to the Retina burner while the remaining three went to the Dalles location above the Dalles Dam.
Our "new guys" were impressed with the scenery and the unbelievable lift. More so at the Dalles slope, than Lumber. Lumber was a bit light with 10-15mph with some calm air thrown in. Dalles was a different bird. As Amos said, "it was rocking!"
After the Retina Burner, we all ended up at the Dalles site and flew into late. We enjoyed 20-25mph winds and only a few crashes.
