I'm into Extreme 3D Aerobatics and like most Extreme 3D'ers, I set my control throws up to some insane angles. But this can be used for all airplanes from trainers to full 3D and everything in between.

I had found that the throw meters on the RC market usually didn't handle the large throw angles that 3D pilots need to set up. So I went on a hunt to see what could meet my needs.

Note - to this day, i have found nothing in the RC market that can handle near 90 degree throws. Yes, I have one plane that uses 88 degrees of elevator on my "insane" rate.

So what works?

360 protractor - nope.

180 protractor - workable but there had to be something better.

Laser stuff yata, yata - expensive

Cheap angle finder - bingo!

I use a cheap angle finder available at Home Depot and most of the big box home improvement stores.

For flat surfaces (non-airfoiled) I just set it to the angle I need, place it on the surface I am setting up, and dial up/down the servo throws on my radio until the full throw meets and matches the gauge. See photos below.

For airfolied surfaces - I get close by setting the angle finder on the surfaces but due to the airfoil it has a little wobble and won't sit flat. After getting close, I then hold the angle finder on the outside and check the centerline of the control surface and the main surface (horz. stab & elevator, wing & aileron, or vert stab & rudder) and tweak it from there.
