Got her finished today....

Spec's: 3536-1450 kV motor, 60A ESC, 8x4.5 Master Airscrew prop, 17gr metal gear digital servos, 6 channel Spectrum receiver with satellite, 0.21" Elmer's foamboard throughout. KFm-2 airfoil. Chartreuse and gray with red trim.

Update: She's a rocket. Flew her 4 times today. She's faster at half throttle than my original combat was at full throttle.....but she also glides

So now I need to replenish the foamie fleet starting with my 32" Kombat....

Finally got this thing finished and ready to fly. I printed all the decals and finished the trim work. Hope y'all like it..I can't wait to fly it.

Final configuration: 2840-1800kV Prop Drive, 40 A ESC, 7x3 Master Airscrew, TowerPro MG92B metal gear digital servos, 2200mah 50C 4S battery. AUW 34.5 oz. (1092 gr), 14.8 oz/sq.ft. Power to weight = 440W/2.16=204 W/lb. Thrust to Weight = 1.41 (eCalc). 40" wingspan. 336 sq in wing area.

Oh, and the next time I say I want to build a swept and tapered wing, y'all talk me out of it.

Update: Maidened the Bullit this morning, and she's fast, but not as fast as predicted by eCalc....but the good news is she launched flat....two clicks of right was all she needed. I'll get video tomorrow morning....there was only two of us at the field when I flew her. The other guy launched her for me.

Today's Darwin Award goes to....drum roll.......me...

I thought I was being so smart by printing a cowl with mounting holes that matched the bolt pattern of the motor mount cross....the problem, well, I got the motor inserted in the cowl with the screws......there's no room for a screw driver.......DOH !

Got everything nailed down, hinged (sewn), and sanded......will start covering tomorrow. I think she turned out great !

Still need to turn the throws down a bit and add some expo

Scat Cat 36 Maiden (1 min 6 sec)

Got a start on the wings today. Had to make the trailing edge, leading edge, and the spar caps. Trailing edge is tapered 1/4", Leading edge is 1/4" hard balsa. and the spar caps are 1/8 x 1/2 light ply. Wing joiner is 1/8" light ply (and it fit !). D-boxing and V-boxing are 1/16" balsa. I'll continue to add pictures to this post as progress allows.

Cut the airframe out yesterday morning, separated and rough sanded all the parts, and built the fuse and feathers today.....Will start on the wing tomorrow

With the success of the 36" Scat Cat, I've decided to do another little hotliner; a 40" swept and tapered high wing that by coincidence looks suspiciously like an A-7 Corsair. I mashed the fuselage and feathers of the "Baloney" together with the wing of the "Avenger" plus a "few" revisions. Both are slope soarers from OZ. Plans are for a 2840-2300 Kv Prop Drive, 6x4 APC-E, 2600 mah 40c 3S, 40 A ESC, TowerPro MG 92B servos.

Here's the preliminary drawings. The JPEGs are not to scale and are for illustration only. all the PDF's are plotted on 36x48 Arch E paper and are at 1"=1" scale

Finally got this thing finished and ready to fly. My 3D printer arrived just in time to print the cowling and the landing skids. I had to find a way to protect the aileron control horns from getting caught on a grass runway. In the meantime, I printed all the decals and finished the trim work. Hope y'all like it..I can't wait to fly it.

Final configuration: 2840-1800kV Prop Drive, 40 A ESC, 6x4 APC-E, TowerPro MG92B metal gear digital servos, 2200mah 50C 4S battery. AUW 38.5 oz. (1092 gr), 13.21 oz/sq.ft. Power to weight = 440W/2.41=182.5 W/lb. Thrust to Weight = 1.31 (eCalc)

Well, she flies, and she's quick and agile. Had to turn down the throws significantly and add a bit more expo than usual. Much calmer on the second flight. Video next week if it's not blazing hot like it was today. best part of the first flight was that she launched "flat".... 2 clicks of down was all the trim required.

Finished the covering this morning, minus the decals. Still have to connect the push rods and control horns, but it's already getting too warm in the shop. Still waiting on my 3D printer to arrive so I can print the cowl.. what a complete UPS clusterduck....that rant will be for another day.

Reduced the weight even more by changing the motor (3536-1200) out for a 2840-1800... Smaller ESC, prop, and spinner

Finished the wing this morning and checked weight and fit. Everything is square, plumb, and straight. Weight (sans battery) is 27 oz. I was shooting for 32 or less, and it worked. AUW flight ready should be less than 40 oz. I'm below my estimate. Wing loading should come out around 14 oz/sq ft.

I tried to build as light as I could and maintain structural integrity. Fuselage is 1/8", formers are 1/8 light ply. Wing has 3/32 ribs, 1/4" LE, 1/8 ply spar caps, and 1/16 ply web. Feathers are 3/16. Wing sheeting is 1/16.

Finished the fuselage..routed all the wiring and push rods. I took the time to mill the pockets for the magnet catches for the hatches.......Continue Reading

Those of you that know me also know that I sew my flight surface hinges. Up until now, I was using 6 lb test Spider Wire (Bass Pro Shops) and took the time to cut small v-shape troughs for the thread to lay in......not anymore. I discovered this stuff......10 lb test braided Piscifun Lunker fishing line... 0.1 mm diameter. All you have to do is pull it tight......no notches.

there's an article about how to do sewn hinges........https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...0#post47527273

It took about 3 hours to cut the complete airframe yesterday afternoon.....Probably would have taken me a week to do this by hand.

Guess I need to start gluing things together

Well, today's Darwin Award for Dumb A$$ goes to me. Long story short...I was wondering why the shop was getting so hot all of a sudden (our temps are in the mid-90's). The AC unit can usually maintain ~ 75 degrees. Then I realized that my dust exhaust system on my CNC machine is evacuating over 150 CFM and my AC unit at max delivers 250 CFM..I was sucking all the cool air out of the room...DOH !

Got all the pieces drawn......these are JPEG's so they aren't to scale. I'll print/publish the pdf's once I'm satisfied I have all the parts and pieces correct

It just dawned on me that this thing looks a lot like a Flite Streak

So the new one will be a balsa built up (as light as I can build) 36" Scat Cat for electric. Planning on a 3536-1450 kV motor, 9x6 prop, 60 amp ESC, and a 2600mah 4S. I split the elevator and will try mixing it with the ailerons. Airfoil is a 9% Joukowski.
