FA 180 tried to fly an 80 lbs bench. I should've jumped back instead of rushing forward to catch it.

New favorite engine cleaner - Amsoil Power Foam! Spray on and wipe off the carbon and caked on castor residue. Smells really strong though, scent reminds me of PB Blast.

New $40 adventure! Wonder what it will cost by the time it's all put together? Parts for the older style 270T are near impossible to get. Might have some custom parts and modifications on this one.

Just a bunch of dirty metal pieces. Disassembly was straight forward, a few stripped head bolts that needed careful drilling and extraction. Back plate was tight due to the cam gears being stuck. Heat and Kroil did the trick.

Since I've gotten the ultrasonic, I've had mixed results. This time I'm going to try to document the process to see if I can find a winning procedure that works decently well for most dirty engines.

I'm using a 25% LA Amazing Cleaner solution heated to about 175 degrees F. The engine is a very dirty OS Max FX 46 with a seized crank. I've dismantled as much as possible and tossed them in the ultrasonic cleaner.

Testing the little Harbor Freight Air Eraser with regular baking soda. Picture shows the bottom of 2 Saito FA-40 engine crank cases. The pictures probably doesn't do it justice but the soda blasted one is much cleaner than the one that was cleaned in the ultrasonic cleaner.

Right after blasting the aluminum looks very "white" and matte. After I hit it with a bit of polish and wiped off with a clean rag, it darkened just a tad and gained a little bit of shine. Then I rinsed it off with aluminum parts cleaner. It's pretty close to my desired finish.

This one was stubborn, again low run engine but all gunked up, liberal amounts of heat and penetrating oil worked perfectly to loosen things up enough for a complete disassembly. A quick soak, wipe down and reassembly and it's ready to run. Broke the ball tip of my allen wrench in one of the crankcase cover screws, so looks like a trip to Ace....Continue Reading

Another neat little engine in great condition for it's age and from sitting in a can in a garage for years. Debating if I should polish off the discoloration or leave it as is. The light orangy hue does give it some character....Continue Reading

One of the little gems in a lot I got. Signs of light run time, probably bench run. A bit dirty from sitting in a metal can in the corner of the garage for quite a number of years.
