I see routing suggestions on RCG and FB that real model pilots don't need autopilots or gyros. While I think a lot of models can be flown without them, I don't see a problem with using them. AS3X provides gyro functions but it is not an autopilot. I think of it as being a simulation of actual pilot actions in an aircraft. If you watch some videos of pilots (check out the YouTube videos of Trent Palmer or Juan Browne's Blancolirio channel) you will see the pilots make continuous inputs to the controls. While it's been a long time since I have acted as PIC, I do remember that as you learn to fly and gain experience, you do just start responding to the effects of he atmosphere on the airplane automatically. That's what AS3X does, it replaces you subconscious actions since your are not in the plane to act.

My Airfield Tempest 800mm (31”) Warbird would just never fly right. It only had one battery and a dedicated Tx that took 8 AA batteries. When it did a destructive nose dive it had enough cracks and bent motor shaft that I was done with it.

The electronics came out easily enough. It was like stripping out the nervous system of some kind of dead robot. The control rods were very long and thin. The ESC was more like a motherboard. However I was impressed with the multiple inputs on the receiver and the string servers.

"Chona" is a Ziroli 100" A1 Skyraider scale model. The Ziroli kit was built by Ramon Medina, one of the best model builders in Puerto Rico. The model was built around 2015. Since Ramon built it, I shared with him that if he ever sold it, I would be the 1st in line. I purchased the model in 2017, some months before Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico.

Ramon is not a fan of installing any external payload in his models. Even thou he had made the payload pylons and missiles for the A1 Skyraider to carry, he never installed them. This is one of the things I added to the model. I added the payload pylons and installed E-flite payload releases. I made 2 droppable Napalm bombs for those two pylons. I also finished and installed the missiles and rocket tubes in the remaining wing pylons.

In 2017 I gave the Skyraider my maiden flight, (it had been flown multiple times before by Ramon). The model flew perfectly. I did experience scary moments when prior to the 1st landing, the main landings didn't fully extend themselves. Ramon, who was standing right next to me, told me that this was normal. Ramon explained that the landing gears and big 5.5" wheels created such drag with the airflow that the gear would not fully extend itself unless you slow the model significantly. Taking this measure, the retracts would be able to win over the airflow and fully extend themselves. I installed Carbon Spars on the Lower Ailerons, much improved, and added approx. 1.5 degrees of Right Angle in the Motor to counter Torque.
If the Weather holds I'll be Launching it again this Morning 😉

Yeah , the 3D printed one .
I completely messed up the all moving elevator because I put the control horn in the wrong place .
Bad ju ju with a all moving elevator .

it's taken me this long to get around to designing and printing a replacement .

Previously : My launches were all over the place because if my fopar . Seemed to glide ok ( seemed to ) .

So hopefully with the control horn in the correct place , I can have consistent launches . ( Well , one can hope )

Just need for Hobbyking to pull out the proverbial finger and get STUFF in stock .

A 13.75 mile drive with a decent payload went slowly & ended in battery death. The increased traction of these tires wasn't worth the reduction in range. It actually hit a wet patch & spun out, but these tires have never spun out as much as the stiff ones. It burned 335mAh/mile, still in line with the lunchbox but real slow.

The motors couldn't go very fast with the full payload on level ground & that was the deal breaker. There could be a new tire with a very slight arch to bring back just enough stiffness without requiring tons of material. Real car tires are flat, but it takes a lot of material to make them stiff.

What's needed is a tire which can be made stiff when it has a payload & flexible without a payload, without air pressure. Having a variable diameter based on desired speed would also be a win.

This thread is about different ways to control a brushless motor, the pros and cons of the different ways and open discussion about brushless motor drive. All idea's and suggestions welcome.

I have a lot of collected old hard disk drives. The neo magnets are very strong, the head spindle and motor bearings are amazing with zero slop. Controlling the three phase brushless motor is not simply hooking up power wires and it spins like a brush motor does. About 3 years ago I had the idea to drive a brushless motor with a single fet and square wave generator and it works, but with limitations.

I currently have played with these brushless motor drive methods:
A: Single fet and function generator driving the motor.
B: H-Bridge and function generator driving the motor.
C: Using 3 fets, 3 resistor and three caps in a cascade fashion
D: Using 3 fets, a decade counter (4017 setup for 3 count) and a function generator.
E: RC electronic speed control (ESC) driving all three phases, with a servo tester to control the esc.

A: Single fet and square wave generator driving the motors 2 phases
(phase-1 to +supply, phase-2 to fet and then ground). Current only goes one direction.
Pro: Very low cost.
Con: Slow accelerating, decelerating and torque.

B: H-Bridge and square wave generator driving the motor 2 phases.
(phase-1 to +supply, phase-2 to fet and then ground). Current goes both directions.

Ingenuity Coaxial Helicopter

Most RC pilots, especially us chopper heads will be aware that taken along with the Perceverance Mars Rover, the first extraplanetary RC aircraft is due to make its maiden flight today 11th April 2021, the incredible Ingenuity coaxial helicopter. History in the making!

Ingenuity's design has clearly been influenced and much of it derived from the recent advances in RC helicopters, including flybarless, electronically stabilised flight control mechanisms as well as various components that can be bought off the shelf. Surprisingly, many of the componets in Ingenuity have been purchased by NASA, and can be found in other applications such as our mobile phones.

Ingenuity has a rotor diameter of 1.2m, a height of 0.49m and a total mass (not its weight on Mars!) of 1.8Kg with 350 Watts power available for a 90s flight.

soo this here is basically the last video in my "flying tank" series Ofcourse this FPV quad needs a FPV-setup, and I decided to try the brand new Caddx Ratel v2 to see what that's about
Should be quite nice as the v1 already is.. I only have one of these Ratel v2 camera's so I can't tell you much about the production-quality other then "mine works" :P
