Winds were about 3-5 MPH and with this Bomber, you can definitely feel the touchiness of this UMX Bomber, and not in a good way. She flies like a Winnebago but has an aerial presentation like the Allies are out to wreck something good! Lipo Battery used was the Lectron Pro 1S 600 mAh 35C. Best viewed in Fullscreen and HD! I performed my first RC Night Flight with the SCS (2S Brushless) Icarus. The Wing Orientation Lights and the docile nature (even with a 2S Brushless system) of the Icarus made this first flight in pitch black darkness capable. Night Flying was a whole new experience.. as I realized that my depth perception was greatly minimized and that I had to rely mostly on the Wing Orientation Lights to guide me through the night sky. Setting up the landing approach was also a bit tricky as it was a challenge to spot the exact location of the ground just before touchdown. Still managed to smooth in that landing though. So glad I chose this plane for my first Night Flight.

A few days before shooting this video, I was out in the same park flying the Air Hogs Firewing Ornithopter which had caught the attention of a local eagle in the area. I managed to evade the attacks several times until the battery ran out. It was a really cool sight to see as this large wing-spanned eagle would swoop down for an attack run, miss, and then circle around for another attack. There was an outdoor staff picnic being held on the opposite side of the park at the time and it must have been an entertaining show for them as they watched this eagle return over and over in search for prey. I was hoping to see the eagle again when shooting this video, but unfortunately was nowhere to be found. Keeping my GoPro close for the next time the eagle pays a visit. Aside from that, this 2-channel toy grade ornithopter is pretty fun in calm to light wind days. Looks like a real bird!

Best viewed in Fullscreen and HD! I performed a stock motor replacement on my Parkzone Ultramicro Spitfire Mk IX using a fresh Hobbyzone Sport Cub S (SCS) Motor. The SCS Motor is the same diameter and pinion as the stock motor, but provides significantly more power for this airframe. Lipo Battery used was the Miniaviation 1S 3.7V 220mAh 45C. Maneuvers such as Loops, Immelmans, and Cuban 8's are now performed with excellent authority with the SCS Motor, as the Stock Motor struggled to provide sufficient thrust to be performed effectively. This Airframe with this Motor flies fast.. and likes to fly fast. Not as fast as my 2S Brushless Corsair, but still respectively quick for a 1S Brushed System. It definitely took me by surprise for this first flight.

If you need to replace your Ultramicro Warbird Motor, using the Hobbyzone Sport Cub S Motor is a good alternative Brushed Motor that will provide a noticeable increased amount of thrust and power. Until I can find a suitable Motor Mount that will fit inside the Airframe, this Ultramicro will have to stay a Brushed 1S System.

I can't say anything but good things about this plane, she just flies incredibly well, even for a 1S Ultramicro in fair winds. Its as if she was just born to fly. My (Beast) Corsair has been modified for the Eflite 2500KV Motor, Eflite 5 x 2.75 Prop, UMX Beast 3D Receiver Module, and UMX Carbon Cub SS (Long) Prop Adapter. Lipo used was an Eflite 2S 180mAh 20C. Flight times of 7 Minutes are easily achieved. Yes, she's fast!

After watching the movie Red Tails, I decided to pick up a UM P-51D Mustang to add to my collection. As I already have the UM P-40 Warhawk and the UMX F4-U Corsair in my hangar, as well as a brand new in box UM Spitfire Mk IX on her way from a Seller in Oregon, I had to complete my Ultramicro Warbird collection.

Out of the box impressions, this is a solidly well built Ultramicro with great detailing, even including a pilot figure. If there is only one thing that I had concerns with her were the flimsy landing gears that seemed to be much flimsier than the UM Warhawk and UMX Corsair. It was most likely due to the longer length of the wire. Aside from this, I verified that all of the control surfaces were centered properly from the factory (which is a first for me) and the Ultramicro Mustang was ready for her maiden flight.

Winds at David Lorenz Park were fairly mild with a 3-4 mph wind occasionally blowing over the AstroTurf field. Initial impressions of this plane... wow. This plane flies like she was meant to be up in the skies. Having a great ROG Takeoff, she had no issues with lift and tracks very well in the air.. much more forgiving than my UM P-40 Warhawk which feels like I'm flying a much heavier plane (or my grandfather's Buick). Rolls were effortless, Loops were executed well with some increased throttle speed. She performs Hammerhead Stalls smoothly and flies Inverted with just a touch of Down Elevator. Hobbyzone Sport Cub S 808 "Sky Eye" Aerial Chase Flight - Aces High (13 min 43 sec)

Its been a while piloting my Hobbyzone Sport Cub S 808 "Sky Eye" and I just about forgot how well she captures video. Even with her still sporting just a stock 1S Motor and Sport Cub S Module along with a GWS 5043 Prop, can still perform exceptionally well with the 808 Camera mounted on the underbelly, and Dubro 1.5" Micro Lite Wheels with easy 8 Minute Flight Intervals as I follow two Pilots at David Lorenz Park. Battery used was a Lectron Pro 1S 600mAh 35 C.

Please be aware that this was not done through FPV and that the flight was done by my line of sight on the field. She was certainly getting tossed around by some of the gusts on the field, but she is ever prevailing. See if you can spot the targets!

Today I gave my UMX Corsair 2S Brushless "Black Sheep" the day off from flights at the park and decided to get myself more acquainted with my more "unfamiliar" plane. I took out my classic UMX P-40 Warhawk out for a lunchtime sortie with 4 Turnigy Nanotech 200mAh 35-70C Lipos. I can't say enough of how well of a presence the Warhawk puts out as she flys by. Maneuvers (Loops, Rolls, Hammerheads, Inverted) with her certainly require more thought with the entry, but she does them very well when executed the way she wants it done. There is one unique maneuver that I have managed to get down with her on command.. I call it a Stall Tumble where she enters a Loop and at the height, she will stall and tumble for a brief moment while tumbling and the prop scrambles to get directional control with the fuselage. After the brief tumble, she always manages to level out as if nothing happened. Very amusing maneuver that I can only do with this particular plane. . Back to work for me!

Flew with a fellow RC Groups Forum Friend by the name of Captain Muscles at David Lorenz Park and had a great time flying in a wide variety of weather from dead calm to some crazy random gusts that would pop out of nowhere. The first sortie was with our Warbirds. He was in his UMX F4-U Corsair and I in my UMX P-40 Warhawk as we enjoyed some calm weather working some formation flying until the 20+ mph winds struck from nowhere. We then made a mad scramble to land. as our planes started to fly backwards. Captain Muscles quickly managed to bring his plane down for a safe uneventful landing, however my P-40 put on a crazy mid-air dubstep show as I had to go around a few times before I managed to set her down to a safe landing.

After the gusts subsided, we were able to take out our more relaxing planes and flew them until sundown. Flying his Hobbyzone Champ and I in my Sport Cub S "Icarus" 2S Brushless, we were able to do some slow formation flying at the baseball field. A few passerbys even stopped to watch the airshow. Crazy how much fun that can be just flying with another RC friend. Good times by all!

Just step into my imagination for a minute. I'm watching Disney's Planes for the first time. I had to capture this moment as I think of the planes in my fleet that have been modified to be more than what they are:

1) Hobbyzone Super Champ "Galm 1" (UMX Radian Module, Sport Cub S Motor, GWS 5043 Prop)

2) UMX Corsair 2S Brushless "Black Sheep" (UMX Beast 3D Module, Eflite 2500KV Motor, Eflite 5x2.75 Prop)

3) Hobbyzone Sport Cub S 2S Brushless "Icarus" (UMX Carbon Cub Module, Eflite 2500KV Motor, GWS 5043 Prop, UMX Carbon Cub Lighting)

The planes in stock form were never really all that fast, nor were they very impressive to begin with as compared to the other UMX planes that already came from the factory with more powerful motors and internals. They were only expected to be 1S slow flying planes and nothing more than that.

Planes - Be More Than What You Were Made For (0 min 42 sec)

Having the desire to just be more than what others have expected them to be.. If only my planes could talk, I wonder what they would say. What would my UMX Pitts "Crimson Knight" and UMX Beast 3D "Thunderstruck" say about my UMX Corsair "Black Sheep" with the 2S Brushless Modification? What would my UMX Carbon Cub SS "Fireball" say to my Hobbyzone Sport Cub S "Icarus" with the 2S Brushless Upgrade??

The Striving Heart of a Champion has always been a recurring theme in movies i.e. Rocky, where the underdog ascends to greatness. So far, I'm enjoying this movie.

Today I was able to take out my UMX F-16 out for her maiden. Winds were slightly gusting but nothing extreme. This fighter is a screamer, leaving my hands with an overhead toss, she quickly took control of the sky, slicing through the warm air and letting birds know of her presence with her "pissed off vacuum cleaner" ducted fanjet. This fighter is significantly faster than my UMX Habu S though she seems to want to fly more comfortably at a higher throttle than the Habu. While she has a decent glide path, the Habu can certainly glide at much longer distances.. The bigger wings of the Habu are probably to blame for her glide. In turns the F-16 can also get a bit touchy as a bit of Up Elevator through the turns with Rudder are recommended.. Otherwise she may lose a bit of altitude and try to nose herself in. Rolls are somewhat axial though there is a bit of an angle to it. Immelmans and Loops are easy to accomplish though the F-16 needs to be at a significant amount of speed to enter the maneuver correctly. Power Climbs to High Speed Dives are impressive as she can slide out her back end, "drifting" through as you pull her nose up.. It's as if she was on a mission to go wreck some sh. She certainly can slow down very well, presenting her Landings with a nice Alpha before touching down on grass. Timer on my DX6 was set to 4 Minutes using a Thunderpower Magna 2S 325mAh 70C Lipo and provided a solid amount of power through the flight. The battery is noticeably warm after flights but not concerning. Overall just a great day at the Park with a very presence-demanding plane.

Well it looks like my Spacewalker just got herself a new pilot, and his name is Hawkeye!

This morning I had a great time flying both my micro Cubs, the UMX Carbon Cub SS "Fireball" as well as my custom Hobbyzone Sport Cub S "Icarus" with the 2S Brushless Conversion. Calm 3-4 mph winds provided a great comparison between the two as I was able to put them through the same aerial maneuvers with no interference. Below I've describe my feelings of flying them both back to back:

Flying this plane, I noticed her rigid mechanical tendencies through turns and maneuvers. She flies very scale with the Yak/Pitts Prop combination as the Prop does tend to slow her down significantly. She definitely does feel more comfortable in the slower flight speeds with this Prop, though every now and then, I had to adjust her to pitch up slightly as she seemed to want to fly straight into anything you point her into especially "terra firma". Her straight wing with strut reinforcements make her very rigid with no flex in the wings during flight. With that being said, you do have to focus more on her as she tends to fly more stable at faster speeds and will tend to tip a wing in a different direction at times with the suggestion of any gust. Rolls, Loops, Hammerheads, Immelmans, and Knife Edges were precise and snappy, and she seemed very comfortable in Inverted.. Not one of my strongest...Continue Reading
