Mike K purchased a used Mini Apprentice from Mike B. This 48” span model will be able to handle winds better than his 4 ounce UMX Turbo Timber. I programmed his DX6 and trimmed her out with SAFE OFF then turned SAFE On. Every maneuver checked good except for aileron to rudder mix that I put into the transmitter. I did not know that it was already programmed into the AR636 A receiver. I think she went cross control similar to the larger Apprentice with the older Apprentice SAFE receiver. There was minimum damage and after replacing the stock prop with an APC 9/6E and inhibiting the TX aileron/rudder mix she flew fine. I like her more than the larger Apprentice because of the Re designed stab. This Apprentice came without a nose wheel and had been in a nose down crash as evidence from the compression wrinkles and a new cowl. I brought her home to make some improvements such as:
1. Adding a steerable tailwheel
2. Programming the ESC prop brake
3. Trimming the stock spinner to fit the APC9/6 prop
4. Glueing the bindplug receptacle to the fuselage side
5. Moving the 18 amp ESC forward to the motorway for more cooling air
6. Adding cloth covered bungee bands to replace the 6 rubber bands.

Chinese made BG knife (9 min 55 sec)

Yes , I am Covid 19 bored ! Danger Dan say's you cant do nothing !
So I got to keep busy , or get seriously bored ! ( I want to fly RC )

Speaking off ! BG had a sale ( BG ? ) that might be confusing . Anyways , banggood had a sale @ the Oz warehouse giving me the opportunity to avoid 10% GST and shipping over and above , if I had purchased from China . Thats got to be nice ...
Anyways , got me a FMS 800 Fox ( Not the V-tail ) , already have the V-tail . ( More some other time )

This is the Chinese BG knife . Out of the box it was not overly sharp at all . So I put a 22deg bevel on it and got it shaving sharp . Honestly I did not expect this knife to do as well as it did . In fact it could have been amazing if not for the edge rolling . But this is a slightly brutal test and for light duty that edge may have lasted a terribly long time . For $16 Ozzi bananas shipped to my door I dont think there is anything to complain about ( cough - cough - rolled edge ) .
So keeping the low / low price in mind , the Chinese BG might make for a decent - I don give a hoot knife !

I’m scheduled for cataract surgery tomorrow. I know it’s routine, done thousands of times a day, but I’m still nervous. It’s going to be on my right eye. My, by far, dominate eye. My left eye also has a cataract but starting with it would have been useless. I’m worried because a mistake could leave me functionally blind. (For a while, the eye doctors have always told me that should I loose vision in my right eye, my brain would make my lazy eye shape up. Not something I want to experience.) The problem is, my cataract is getting progressively worse and starting to have significant impact on day to day business and hobby activities.

What’s the experience? I’ll share some so you can consider the signs. I have acute glaucoma so I have to see the eye doctor routinely, so I knew this was coming well before I had vision issues. If you’re eyes are others healthy, it might sneak up on you. As my right eye cataract grew, I started having a continuous feeling my glasses were dirty. Sometimes they were but cleaning them never really fixed the problem for my right eye. One of my fellow RC club members stated it very well, he said “It’s like looking through a dirty window.” Now there are obvious drop out spots that seem dimmer, until I close my left eye and they just become blurs.

My left eye has a shift in color vision. I can tell if I’m looking at something brightly lit with my right eye closed. What appears white with both eyes looks yellow with just my left eye. At night, all...Continue Reading

Today my wife had the hard part while I flew the plane. While she was videotaping, a 4 year old came up to her:

Colton: Can I fly that plane?
Mary: Maybe when you're older.
Colton: I'm almost five. Maybe I could trade my RC cars for that airplane. Would you go ask him?
Mary: Well, my husband really likes airplanes. He spent a lot of time building them from little pieces of wood.
Colton: My Dad leaves the cars in a closet and doesn't charge them. They can go really fast! 186 miles an hour! ... How long is he going to keep flying (sigh).
Mary: Well, sometimes ten minutes. He's only been up for five minutes. You can ask him to show you how it works when he lands.
Colton: Will he land soon?

Actually I did land right about then and got to describe how the servos worked. He helped me count out all six rubber bands. He was captivated watching me remove the battery and power down my Tx. His grandmother who had hovered nearby promised to get him a rubber-band balsa stick plane. It's what I started on when I was about his age.

The influence we have is really powerful if we'll see engagements as an opportunity and not a nuisance, especially with a precocious kid like Colton. And it didn't hurt that the grandmother noticed my Jesus fish (Ichthus ) on the wing and read the Fellowship of Christian Modelers logo on my hat.

I finally found a MPX Twist, through the kindness of a good online sloper friend. Thanks, you know who you are!

I have needed a 2M efficient light weight sloper for a while, because I have been flying frequently when conditions are such that only the old school EPP Weasel would stay up. A nice light but agile plane is what I needed, and the Twist should fill the bill, and it comes with, and breaks down into a coroplast travel case. SO AWESOME!
I hope to have an AUW of @ 20oz RTF.

Pics to follow.

Yep, it happened. I built a 48" Moth!
What a different mentality building with EPP is.....

Nemesis No1 ( Navy K 628 Lock Back Knife ) (5 min 14 sec)

This Navy K-628 440c could not hold an edge , no mater how much I massaged the factory bevel .
I could get it shaving sharp , but the edge would vanish within 4 or 5 passes through cardboard ( it became a butter knife )
I seriously thought the knife had rubbish steel for a blade .

That was many , many years ago . The knife has been in a box , and labelled a basket case .
It was time to pull it out and put a known bevel on it ( 22deg @ 180 grit with a 400 grit clean up of the bur )

It has gone from basket case to performer with a change in the angle of the bevel . ( How many of my knives are afflicted with a bad factory bevel ? )

Nemesis No2 will be tested next .

A new filter, maximum load test, & the nozzle actually worked. The blower didn't entirely fit in the nozzle, but going halfway seemed to be enough.

The outlet was left scotched on so if the air comes out too fast, the outlet diameter can be changed. A motorized outlet was deemed unnecessary & would have required upsizing the rest of the nozzle. A bayonet mount for the outlet would have been nice.

The only glitches were the IR getting obstructed by the cables & no protection from the nozzle hitting the wall. The air comes out faster than expected. The bearings & contortions didn't impede the airflow as much as expected, but that's why it's a fighter jet nozzle.
