So I figured if I was going to go through the trouble of hauling out the Easy Up tent and two chairs, then I might as well give a name to our rag-tag group of renegade flyers. The first official DFC meeting took place today. A brief sum up of the meeting notes confirm a bunch of crap talking about flying skills opened the meeting, followed by general blabbing about wives, girlfriends, and how hot it was even under the tent. Casualties for the day were a blown out ducted fan, a nose over on landing, and two broken props due to low level hovering trials.
I had a great time, hope more people will show up as they see how much fun we're having/ See you guys next time. Meeting adjourned! :0)

I picked up the HobbyZone Champ to compliment my growing micro collection. This plane is, without a doubt, the best flying micro plane Ive had the pleasure of flying. Its a bit larger than the Ultra Micro Cub and flies oh sooo sweet.
I was doing rudder rolls and inverted flight with the little Champ outside this afternoon Grab a little altitude, push full rudder, then full down elevator as she rolls inverted, and release as she comes back around. Easy to do and alot of fun from a plane with such generous dihedral. Inverted flight is a little more tricky; I pull back on the stick like I'm going to do a roll, and as she goes inverted, release and give about 50% down elevator and it will hold inverted flight. It takes quite a bit of rudder to keep it from rolling over though.
The Sukhoi's in the photos belong to bsbauman and HomeDaddy.The new SU26XP is quite the performer when compared to the original. bsbauman was doing some pretty clean knife edge's a few seconds after it's maiden flight

Heres some pics of my 1st meeting with the ATL RC Heli club. I took quite a few pics and narrowed it down to my favorite ones. Most of them are of a Trex 700N piloted by Joey Scott. I met some new friends and got a couple of nice flights in myself. The thunderstorms were building but the wind stayed down and made for some great flying.

With the weather in the 70s and 80s in Atlanta, I felt the urge to strap the dust-covered floats onto my Hangar 9 Cub. The Cub flies so sweet, even with the added drag of a pair of pontoons. The other plane is owned by a fellow CCRC club member who was flying at the spot.

Heres a few photos I took for the Slash 4x4 review I did for Model Retailer Magazine. Great truck, nice power increase over the stock 2wd. I GPS'ed the Slash 4x4 at 31.1 mph. With the brushless Vileneon combo the Slash will break all four tires loose on the pavement and power slide through turns without rolling over, even with the suspension set soft in the factory configuration. As ready-to-run Short Course trucks go, I would highly recommend one

I've started a small architectural and industrial photography business this year. My initial goal was to start making some extra money on the side but it's beginning to grow into an obsession. I've applied for LLC status and I'm starting to explore advertising on a serious level. My new goal is to eventually quit my day job and run this business full time. I have a ways to go but I'm on the right track for success.

I've introduced the AP element into the business. Since almost all AP in Atlanta is done using full-sized airplanes and helicopters, I have an advantage by using an rc model; cost is down and I can operate at lower levels (< 1000 feet) for more detailed shots.

Heres a few pictures of my initial test shots with the Orb AP platform and a Canon Rebel XTi DSLR

Here's some photos from the tonite's Briarwood fly-in. This is the final meeting at this location. It was also the 1st night testing out my new Canon 50D camera.
Im really impressed with the image quality vs my older Canon XTi. It also handles the less-than-stellar lighting conditions of an indoor court very well. Granted there is noticable ISO noise (due to the low light and need for high shutter speed around 1/200th) in the photos, I think the overall quality is great. Im looking forward to shooting some great reviews with this camera.

Take a look at pics 7 and 8: We taught a very eager young man how to fly. After all his friends left for the day and we had the gym, he hung around and asked alot of questions about flying. Finally, he got a chance to fly a Vapor. I must say that after a few minutes on the sticks, he was a natural. +1 for another person introduced to this fine hobby.

Ive been an rc pilot for many years, but the indoor fly-in is relatively new to me. It seems that only recently have a group of diehard aviators persued places to fly indoors in Atlanta. Tonite we "tested" a new gymnasium and set up four future meeting dates to gauge participation. Opening night wasn't much of a turn out, but at least we all got some decent flying in.

I find it amusing that as soon as you define a flying space, the amount of midair mishaps increase exponentially. Luckily, the indoor collision usually results in a few laughs and maybe a few pieces to pick up... nothing a dab of CA wont fix.

Overall I had a good time at my first fly-in. The weather is pretty chilly down here and it was a nice treat to fly in a heated gym at night. I currently have an Ember II, Ultra-Micro Grasshopper, and a Blade MCX. I think I'll do a little internet clicking and add a 3d plane to my mini hangar very soon.

Heres a little video I put together from some rc boating clips. I originally used a plug-in called twixtor to slow down the footage but now that Premere Pro CS4 has its own slow motion plug-in installed, I dont need twixtor anymore. To create nice smoothe slow motion, Premiere looks at frame a and b, then decides what a frame between them would look like, and recreates it as a vector image. it takes forever to render but its worth it.

I'd like to show you all my Ultra Micro Cub. I converted it to an L-4 Grasshopper. This was a very quick and easy conversion. If your interested in making your plain yellow cub unique, heres how to do it.

First, peel off all the stickers. The black cub stripe down the side helps hold the fuse halves together so you will need to put a few drops of CA on both sides to keep it together.

For paint I chose Tamiya Olive Drab acrylic, flat white, and flat black. All paint was shot with an airbrush and masking tape. I didnt do alot of prep work except sand the whole plane with 400 grit to remove the dots from the fuse and to give the paint a good surface to adhere to. Even after that the paint liked to peel up some when I removed the masks for the stripes and windows. A quick touchup with a brush fixed all the spots.

You'll need Plastruct .040"x.125 Styrene strips and .025" styrene round rod for the wing struts. The struts are attached with foam safe CA. Cut the struts to your desired length and ca the ends together, then push them into the foam fuselage right behind the landing gear. Your goal is to make a little indentation to fill with CA and reinsert. To attach the strut to the wing, just use a drop of CA and thats it. The round rod was used to mimic the tail feather wire and support bracing for the strut. Remove the foam tires and shoot the whole plane with olive drab. Mask your invasion stripes and windows and your done!
Im going to add the stars and bars as well as a few numbers as soon as I make the masks.

Total weight in stock form is 26 grams
Total weight after conversion is 29 grams
Only 3 grams added with struts and paint! Not bad, huh?

The weather is pretty bad here so I will maiden her as soon as the wind dies down.

Im also writing a much more detailed how-to article on the micro L-4 for RC Sport Flyer Magazine. Stay tuned for more info on when it comes out!

Hi All,
This is my first blog entry so I'd like to take a moment to introduce myself.
My name is Matt and I'm an avid modeler of just about anything pertaining to rc. I started off with a Kyosho Turbo Optima Mid SE about 18 years ago and graduated to planes a few years later with a Hobbico Duraplane. I took a few years off from modeling to concentrate on college, girls, and cars... which were more important to me at the time. After graduating from The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) with a BA in Digital Multimedia, I applied my skills in computers and photography/video as a review writer for RCUniverse.com. With 50+ reviews under my belt at RCU, Ive learned alot about what people want to read when it comes to reviewing products.

The hardest part of being a review writer is giving an unbiased review. Some companies expect you to sell the product, others want you to touch on the bad aspects of the model but not dwell on them. And very few want a totally unbiased review that could go either way. Ive learned so much about marketing, sales, action and still photography, and html/javascript by working with RCUniverse and it has opened many doors and allowed me to test alot of great (and a few not so great) products.
