Phil's main interest at the moment is resurrecting old R/C radios to modern spec, particularly 1960s Single-Channel sets, old Reed sets and very early 1+1 sets, which a large group of us fly regularly.

My own gear, all of which flies at every opportunity, includes a Gem single-channel set, an RCS Guidance System, a Remcon 12 channel Reeds set, an Orbit 10 channel reeds, two Macgregor MR200 S/C sets, one on 2.4g and one on 35mhz, a Macgregor Digimac 1+1 (which give propo rudder and a sequential 3-position throttle), and a Skyleader Clubman refitted on 2.4g. All of these sets are regularly seen down at the flying field in a variety of 'period' models. Using 2.4g means that these sets are no inconvenience to other flyers although they often stop flying to watch the old gear in action!

We mostly use my custom encoders which emulate exactly the operation of 'period' gear whilst driving a modern 2.4g RF module.

All the project documentation is on the 'Archive' page.

I also have a Youtube channel which has many videos of my conversions, including Single-Channel, Reeds, 1+1, 2+1, and 5ch propo.

Also my pal Shaun and I do club presentations covering radio control from the very earliest days of the Coherer, up to about the 80s when pretty much one propo set was like any other. We have ground-based CW and hand-held tone S/C sets, 2, 3, 6, 10, 12 channel reeds, several GG, pulse-propo, manual pulse - with at least one working...Continue Reading
