A LHS had a depron building contest early in the summer of '09, and I got sucked in, hook, line, and sinker. The rules were pretty simple. Winners would be based upon VOTES (not judged) by anyone that came into the LHS. Depron had to be a major component of the build. (You could glass it, or attatch it to other stuff, or whatever, but the depron HAD to be a major component of the build.) And it had to be a plane-type-thing. No depron cars, boats, helis, or static display stuff. The only other factor was that at the end of the contest, the thing had to FLY in order to claim a prize.
At first I had some crazy idea about building aome weird interlaced "X" shaped thing. I didn't even get to drawing a sketch before that idea was scrapped. I thought about telling the shop owners to take me off of the list for the contest, but never placed that call. Then, I decided to act on an idea I've had for years.
First, a little history lesson about me. I've played guitar off and on for almost 20 years.(more off than on, lately) In the late 80s/early 90's when I was really starting to get comfortable with a guitar in my hands, I was into heavy metal and all the hair-band stuff that was going on. I had always really liked the Gibson Explorer, V, and SG models, as these seemed to be the choise of the classic "HEAVY" metal guys; you know...Tony Iommi, James Hetfield, Randy Rhohds, etc., but could never afford one.
