Every year the Wintonbury Flying Club holds their two day Giant Scale Fly-In at their wonderful club field in Bloomfield, CT at the end of the summer. This year's event took place on August 31 and September 1.

Both days were graced with fantastic weather with fair skies and light variable winds! We were able to make it out to the event on the second day of the event to fly and take photos.

There were a wide variety of aircraft types out on the flight line; from WWI trainers to a bunch of WWII fighters. Even the odd giant scale electric model and turbine could be found!

Here is the link to the entire gallery that features 550 photos from Sunday's event: https://www.sawncraft.photography/20...-Scale-Fly-In/

In the mean time, here are a few sample images from the set:

Sawn Craft is thrilled to announce the release of our new series of aircraft kits, the Front Yard Fighter series! Aircraft that will be developed under the FYF banner will be sized such that you can easily fly them right in your front yard (or any small space)!

This new series takes us away from the XPS foam that we are using with our other kits and into extremely durable EPP foam! These aircraft are designed to stand up to the rigors of indoor flying where walls, ceilings, and other pilots often get in the flight path!

The FYF series will be jump started by a pair of fantastic flying models! Those models are the: Sawn Craft Bearcat 24!

and the: Sawn Craft Zero 24!

Both models are CNC-cut out of extremely light and durable EPP foam and includes all carbon, laser-cut control horns, and hardware required to complete the build!

These aircraft are designed around a fairly standard 2S brushless power system. The 14g motor spins a 6x4 prop and with a 10A ESC the entire system outputs around 50W!

Designed to fly in an area as small as the size of a single basketball court, you can be sure that they will work in your small venue! Maneuverability is key in small spaces so you will notice the large control surfaces on these kits; those allow for precise control and great aerobatic capability! These warbirds have the power and control to dogfight with the best aces in the air and then celebrate victory with some 3-D maneuvers!

We are extremely happy to announce the release of the fifth kit in our Micro Fighters series! This new model builds on the performance and construction techniques of its predecessors and that shines through in the air! Without further a due, I present the Sawn Craft Micro F4D/F-6 Skyray!

The model is CNC-cut out of extremely light and durable XPS foam and includes all carbon, laser-cut control horns, and hardware required to complete the build!

Just like all of our Micro Fighters, the Micro Skyray is designed to be powered by the standard 1S UMX-type power system that you will find in numerous BNF and RTF models such as the Hobbyzone Champ.

Designed to fly in an area the size of a single basketball court, you have the choice to build your Micro Skyray with either rudder and elevator controls or with elevons as both tails are included in the kit. Using the rudder/elevator controls will allow for added control at extremely low speeds and excels at high alpha flight while the elevon controls will provide a more sporty and aerobatic flying experience.

Sawn Craft Micro F4D Skyray Specs
  • Wingspan: 12"
  • AUW: 1.2oz / 34g
  • Lightweight and Durable XPS and Carbon Construction
  • R/E/T or Elevon Controls Included
  • Designed for common 1S UMX power systems
  • Simple build using tab & slot alignment
  • Full-color instruction manual included

We are also partnering with a well-known decal manufacturer to provide custom-sized graphics packages for this, and all of our other models so check in the coming weeks for those to become available on the website.

The Micro F4D Skyray kit is available now at Sawn-Craft.com!

Well, we couldn't have asked for nicer weather today! There wasn't a cloud in the sky and though around noon-time the thermals brought some wind, for the most part the air was full of planes! There were some amazing WW1 and WW2 models being shown and flown!

I was able to get in a handful of flights on my Hangar 9 Sopwith Camel and Freewing SBD-5 Dauntless as well as my Micro F-22! Here is a video of one of our club pilots flying my Micro F-22:

The attached photos show the list of generous sponsors that donated to the event raffle that all proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warrior Foundation. Today's raffle raised over $600 for the charity! The second photo is of just a small portion of the planes in attendance with the AT-6 Texan in the foreground that won Best In Show!

We'll be back tomorrow for what is forecast to be another perfect day for flying! Come join us if you are in the area! For more information about the event, visit www.NCRCC.org

This journey that we've been on over the past year, getting Sawn Craft up and running, has taught us quite a bit. Two weeks ago, though, I spoke with a gentleman on the phone that requested a product catalog. Hmm. At that point in time I had never even thought about putting together a print catalog of our products; why should we since we have a website? Well, we've worked to get the print document to ship to this gentleman and any others that request it.

I'm just very thankful that I've been able to work with some great customers that are willing to suggest things that they'd like to see! With any luck, we'll have many years to come of happy manufacturing and even happier customers just as long as we remember that the world still does appreciate the value of a print document and a hand-written letter!

We went to the Big Biplane Bash today in Farmington, CT. It was a good-sized event with probably 35 pilots and close to 100 multi-winged airplanes! It was a last minute decision to attend this one, but it will surely be on the calendar for next year!...Continue Reading

I have arranged some time so tonight I will be running some cutting tests on a Universal Laser 80w cutter!

I've used this machine to cut some test cuts last year, but this time I have a variety of materials, (DTFB, EPP, Depron, balsa, basswood, plywood, and poster board) and a truly scientific test method so the results should be repeatable for future production runs!

Stay tuned to find out more about the new projects that I'll be finishing up in the coming weeks!
