With my current A330-300 project (Build Thread Here) I figured I'd make a parallel thread to show some back-of-the-house things mostly dealing with creating a 3D model of a plane from drawings and pictures.

What will this thread cover?
Rather than being a step-by-step guide, this be written assuming the reader has basic knowledge and understanding of CAD modeling features. This thread will cover "problem-solving", workflow, and my personal "best practices" when it comes to modeling a plane specifically for RC flight.

What if you are a beginner and need more direction?
Check out the blogs and threads posted by roscoedude and Longhorne as they cover more in-depth the features and functions in Solidworks. These guys were some of my inspiration and help with originally learning the software. They also have some pretty sweet designs and builds.

General Tips:
  • Don't just use technical line drawings, find real photos of the plane from different angles to better understand some of the more complex shapes. Some pictures can even be used to generate sketches if the picture was taken fairly head-on.
  • Rename features and sketches. You can search for names in the feature tree, and it helps with navigation when you want to hide/unhide/edit specific items.
  • Understand some compromises will need to be taken for construct-ability.
  • Try to focus on one part to completion before moving on to the next. This way you can group features/sketches into a folder to

I'm compiling a thread to showcase the various ordinance I have modeled and uploaded to Thingiverse for others to download. Thread will be updated as I add more ordinance and complete painting/decals.

Model Downloads for 3D Printing
All these ordinance listed in the thread are uploaded to Thingiverse so anyone with a 3D printer can download the files and print for themselves. One thing to note is that all files are uploaded with a Creative Commons - Attribution - Non-Commercial - No Derivatives license.

Direct links to the specific parts will be posted in the various posts below. For a link to all designs I have created you can go here and browse through the list:

-Currently I am no longer providing 3D printing services. You will have to use Shapeways or reach out to folks in the 3D printing Sub-Forum or possibly the Classified.
