DustOff #6 - HK FW190 WarBird Kit - Too much Wind & Crash!

Here is a link to the Video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amGcJVSR8-M

Well, I certainly debated with myself whether or not to launch this plane.
I's pretty draggy and has a large profile for the wind to push.
The wind was 5-8mph on the ground and felt like 10-15mph approx. 30 feet in the air.
Plus, the wind was 90 degrees to my runway ;-)
This is one of those days where I should have packed up and gone home.
Needless to say I didn't pack up but I did crash.
If I didn't fly in significant wind I wouldn't be flying much at all where I live, so I'm marginal often in the wind ;-)

This Kit is discontinued but they still have the F6F Hellcat ;-)

That critter in the photo below was one which came with two other models, both of which have been mentioned in previous blogs and are pictured below. Both are decade-old E-flite examples and both fly great after some loving. One is an Adagio 280 motor glider and the other is a Mini Ultra-Stick.

What this .55-powered model is is anyone's guess. It's a sport plane, obviously kit built and fairly good sized with a 6' wingspan. More importantly, it came with an O.S. .55 which is still very much in production! New o-rings for the needle valve are on order and while the crankcase as a small chunk taken out of it near the rear muffler mounting bolt, it doesn't appear to be critical. Even the fuel tank appears to be in good shape and it'll get a new pickup hose.

Incredibly, it has standard Futaba servos! Three in the fuse and one on the wing working torque rods for the ailerons.

I bought a strip of self-adhesive trim so that I can easily fix some small rips in the covering. I also bought a new tail wheel. I already had a brand new motor mount on hand. To sum up, this will be a seriously low-buck project!

Back at first round of the national championships for the third time. I still competed in sport class as honestly I haven't had time to start learning more difficult programs and I still don't have a plane that would suit them. My 95" 3DHS Extra is great flying plane, but due to it's size and 12S battery it's not suited for higher classes (2m and 10S limitation).

Probably the most interesting thing was that Lassi Nurila was using his new plane in the competition. Lassi has been designing and building this plane through the winter and based on what I heard it will enter some kind of production (meaning it will be available for purchase!). When compared to Sebastiano Silvestri's three plane and Gernot's Pandora I prefer Lassi's plane streamlined look.

Lassi is still fine tuning the setup, so it's very interesting to see how this season and big competitions in Europe will go for him.

Test Flight #2 - Ranger G2 with 8X4 Prop - Loops & Rolls ;-)

Here is a link to the Video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzJ9R8klxuo

After performing the Motor Thrust Angle MOD on the Ranger G2 it gave me space for an 8x4 Prop.
I removed the stock 7x5 Prop to conduct some Test Flights with and 8x4 Prop.
This should produce significantly more thrust than the stock 7x5 Prop.
I have increase the Elevator Dual-Rate since the 1st Test Flight as it didn't seem to have quite enough elevator authority.
Let's see if that helps.
I also wanted to see how the Roll Rate is on this large plane ;-)
So let's go do some Rolls and Loops ;-)

Another failed launch attempt of the FT Long EZ with a little more severe damage this time. So back to the repair (or maybe rebuild) bench with this one. I've got some new tricks and suggestions that I may try for next time OR, I may rig up/buy some sort of launcher.

FT Long EZ... another bad launch/crash! (0 min 50 sec)

A couple of weeks ago, I made the mistake of bumping the antenna of my old trusted Taranis into the kitchen table. A horrific message "Tx antenna problem" appeared on the screen, making me expect the worst. After restarting the radio, the message disappeared but it sure did hurt my great confidence in this radio, even after successful rage testing and everything.

I really don't want to lose any of my models over this glitch/problem, and so I decided to replace it and only fly a couple of cheapo models with the old radio.
When comparing features and prices, I quickly ended up with the Horus X10(S). I didn't want another Taranis, because I was always very disappointed in the hardware quality of the push-button switches near the display, and the screen itself. I really wanted to stick to OpenTX, because in my opinion, it can't be beaten on price/performance, and the almost limitless possibilities it offers.
I never craved a color screen, and most certainly not a touchscreen, but from what I read bout the Horus display, it was quite clear to me that this would really fit my bill: large enough, clearer text, sunlight-readable, crisp.
The use of widgets is also a big added value: plenty of screen area available to display data, fully customizable screens,....

I was very lucky to find a second-hand X10S with long sticks with integrated 3-position switches and pushbuttons, exactly what I needed. Since I'm a tray-flyer, I needed to mod the radio:
  • designed my own

i have been flying gliders before i learned radio control. free flight. and designing them too. now am still into gliders (R/C), and designing some too.
when i learned about the radian, i got 1. after extensive flying it, i consider it great for catching thermals when there is not much wind. period.
not only that, is the fastest to get ready. stable, forgiving, reasonably priced, what could any1 else want? now they replaced it with the 1 with lights.
still, is a great plane for all around thermal flying.
every time i go to the field i carry 1, together with my own designs, and launch it first, just to warm up.
and i think that it is sad that the designers that work for large business are not known, but still, i wish this reaches him (them).
if so, thanks for a great design...
i also own the small version (umx) , and it performs great too.
tried the 2.6, but it is a horse of different color. not my kind of plane.

So I did a repaint of my E-Flite Timber to Little Annie Fanny of the 199th RAC- Swamp Fox that flew in Vietnam. I also did a battery hatch mod moving the location of the battery from the underside of the fuse to the topside, no more flipping the girl upside down to change out batteries.

Now she will coordinate airstrikes against ground targets for fast movers and assist in the search and rescue of downed aircraft and crew at the flying field!
