Since a young boy I have been a DIY designer/builder. I'm now 60. For a decade I designed 8 IOMs and built them with help from my friends I call my shop slaves.

I also design independent living aids to make my and more importantly my wife's life easier.

Two years ago I started to design and build my own wheelchair, ramps to load it into and out of our Honda Element, and convert the 'box on wheels' into a w/c friendly vehicle. Since then we have done a huge home renovation to allow me to live and die at home. I have a rare disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. The project has been on hold up until a month ago.

Here's a little history about me and my robo arm project. I have a very rare form of ALS. The symptoms are the same but the deterioration is much slower. I was diagnosed at 17 and I am now 57.

For the past 7 years I've known my arms would weaken to the point I won't be able to feed myself. For the past 30 years Independent living has been my top priority in life. For the past 3 years I've been developing a robotic arm to assist me in day to day life. For at least 10 years I've used lightweight teachers to pick up things I accidentally drop on the floor.
