Dear Jim and Members,

Family and life gets real busy at times. I thought when I fully retired at age 67 after 38 years at USPS and 3 years at a local police department I would have more time. However, with a father in law in assisted living, my mother moving from assisted living to skilled nursing it is amazing how fast time gets away from you. Paperwork, computer work, paying their bills, obtaining their personal needs, helping my older children with different is a pleasurable work. It is as my trainer about 15 year ago told me "RC will always be can always go back to it.

He was a great trainer having taught me on a 72 mhz nicad Futaba buddy box system / Easy Star and on to a Super Cub LP that I modified with his suggestions. My trainer recently contacted me to see if I would like to purchase some of his old equipment. I got with him...unfortunately he has degenerative optic nerve difficulties. He has no depth perception and trouble with focus. He flew his own real cub for a long time along with learning and doing rc aircraft back when there were no buddy boxes and battery power was only a dream. t really was hard to see him struggle. But with his encouragement as we discussed things going on in life...I am setting aside time early in the mornings and late in the evening to "get back" to the hobby I love. The building / working on both foam and balsa models is so relaxing along with getting an aircraft into the air...I loose...Continue Reading

25$ FPV goggles (1 min 48 sec)

Get it here:

I never expected these cheap Eachine VR006 goggles to be that good! Imo they are perfect for beginners and people who don't want to spent too much money. I like the picture quality and I had no problems with interferences in the park. Great!

Who says model aviation isn't exciting?!?!

My close call this weekend. Phew! Missed it by "that" much.

Ming seems to like playing with his Vtols lately, it might be worth giving them a try .

It adopts impact-resistant engineering EPO engineering materials, built-in carbon fiber rod reinforcement, and very impact.

It adopts 3 1370 brushless motors, high-efficiency blad'es, full power, high-precision and high-torque 9g digital steering gear 2PCS,
which is used to pull the front motor. High-precision 4.3g digital steering gear controls the aircraft's rudder surface.

The aircraft adopts 6-axi's gyroscope with air pressure and high altitude, 3D/6G mode conversion, suitable for different scenes,
and is more suitable for beginners to advance practice flight.

The aircraft can take off and land vertically, vertical landing, air mode conversion, and also has a combination of beginner mode and aerobatic mode, effectively solving the problem of small flight space, unable to take off, and beginners do not have the ability to take off the flight take-off and cannot take off smoothly.

Aircraft has multiple flight modes

Multi-rotor mode Multirotor flight (four-axis), the aircraft can fly vertically like a quadcopter and helicopter.
Hover flight and forward and backward left and right side fly and spin flight and a one-button take-off / one-button landing function.

Vertical flight vertical crane mode, aircraft air-to-air conversion mode, set up by the horizontal flight mode,
can fly vertically like...Continue Reading

450x New motor ( 720 ) (1 min 8 sec)

Motor be a 720 brushed quad motor ( 7mm x 20mm )
Prop is overly small
CG is too far back
Flying weight is 47 grams
Its overly breezy ..

Swapped out the prop for a larger one when I came home and did some repairs .
I ordered a 8.5 x 20 brushed motor the other day ( The 720 will have to do for now )

The other wing ...............
2 wings in the kit ...
I ordered a WLtoys F959 flight board and a 959 motor ..
ALready have some 959 folding props .
Will try again ..
My F959 has about 1:1 power to weight ..
So in a 450x it might be more like 2:1
Should be better than the 0.5 to 1 I have now ( if that ) , might be more like 0.25 to 1

That 8520 will be interesting ! 53,000 rpm

In this post I'll be discussing getting the wing prepped for servo installation.

The Wing - Prep

I start working on the wing first. I like to get this out of the way first. The wing is the most complex part of the build. Spending time getting everything right here will ensure that your model launches true, holds trim and flies right, and lasts for many years. The key to achieving this is having good tight, zero-slop control surfaces along with correctly aligned push-rods. The following steps will help you prep the wing for the servo install.

I use lots of blue painters tape to write mark spots on the wing as well as to protect the surface. You may find that your tape doesn't stick well. This is because there may still be some mold release on the surface. As a general first step I wipe down the wing surface with isopropl alcohol. This also gives you a good opportunity to caress and love your model .

The next step you take is to stabilize the control surfaces. Most likely when you got the model out of the box NAN had the edges taped so that the ailerons and flaps wouldn't move around during shipment. It's best to go ahead and reinforce this a bit. I put about 15 cm (6") of tape on either side of top of the wing along the skin so that the tape overlaps the aileron or flap and the wing. Make sure to do the control surface is in a "neutral" flight position, like cruise. It isn't important to be exact you just want the aileron or flap to be in a...Continue Reading

I decided to track my Xplorer X3, 2019 edition, build here instead in a public thread. In a number of posts I'm going to try to cover in-depth the manner in how I approach building this model. The first time I tackled this it was very intimidating. Luckily I have access to some top notch pilots and builders, Jody Miller and Jeff Duval. Both of these guys have build tons of Xplorers and know how to get them built and setup to win contests. Hopefully I'll try to best pass along tips and tricks that I've learned so that anyone reading should be able to build one of these models with confidence. This first post will cover getting things ready.

Getting Your Model

First things, first. Inspect everything you have. Do this before you sign for your model from the shipping company. In the USA our NAN dealer is Soaring USA. They pack their models for shipping in probably the best possible manner. Everything is bagged, wrapped in bubble wrap, covered in foam, and taped down. The box even has a 2x2 running down its back so it can't get compressed. Even still, shipping companies, I'm looking at you FedEx, can still come up with some creative ways to damage items.

Description: You can see how the creases and holes match up. Inspect your models before signing for them!

The box on the left was delivered to my residence in December of 2018 and the box on the right is the latest in July of 2019. You can see how FedEx has some piece of machinery that has placed creases and holes in the same spots. The more heavily damaged box on the left contained my extremely fragile NAN Explorer Big...Continue Reading

This is my Maiden Flight Review of the Freewing A-4 Skyhawk 80mm EDF Jet with a CG tip after the flight. Please excuse the crappy landing.

Freewing A-4 Skyhawk 80mm EDF Jet Maiden Flight Review & CG Tip (5 min 8 sec)

Here are my review notes for this stunning Freewing EDF Jet:

- Nice smooth finish on foam
- Scale retracts with quality suspension
- You can go between the F & E models with ease due to the magnetic “hump”.
- In addition to the hump, the provided decal sets and the fact the airframe comes bare allows for significant customization.
- The kit also comes with tons of different pieces including a tailhook and cockpit steps you can glue on for example.
- It has been out for a while, so all of the bugs have been worked out making the actual plane build quick and easy with no surprises.
- I felt comfortable in the air very quickly

- It took a while to apply the waterslide decals, but that was mostly due to me never using them before.

A few weeks ago, I absent-mindedly bid on a Cockpit SX on a local auction site.
What I really wanted was the receiver, but I thought my bid would be too low and forgot about it.

To my surprise I won the auction and got the receiver and transmitter in the mail.

The transmitter was truly hideous. The pics did show it, but I had not been looking at them close enough. The gray surface was worn down, the whole thing dirty and gross.

Hmm. I decided to dismantle and to my disappointment, almost all the plastic pins were broken inside. I threw the parts in a box.

A week later I decided to look at it again and figured there was little to lose by trying to repair it.

After serious cleaning a I painted the front with Tamiya TS-19 metallic blue (white primer underneath) glued the little pins back as best as I could and put the thing back together.

The glue has no chance holding the screws so I had to glue some parts in place and use two pieces of balsa to support the switch board for the toggle wheel and trim buttons.

I also realise how much better my new Cockpit is. So this will be sold when I’m done!

The arms are beefed up, extra 20x20 mount holes behind fpv cam on the main plate, main plate now has sunk nuts on it whereas v.2 had sunk nuts on cross brace. The v.3 therefor mounts the cross brace on the complete bottom, v.2 the main plate was the bottom with cross brace cutting into stack space potentially. V.3 has more fpv cam mounting holes, and the mount has a wider footprint now also.

Some of what I have learned to capture better quality, Smooth Micro FPV Drone HD Video during flights. We go over the steps we have used to reduce and mitigate unwanted vibrations, oscillations, and “jello” in our HD video. These steps are implemented for the quadcopter frame and components prior to flight, the camera settings and video capture during flight, as well as the post-processing of the video. Although we are using the Caddx Tarsier in this build, the jello/oscillation mitigation steps we cover are applicable to all HD cameras. I’m sure these are not all-inclusive of everything which can be done in any of these 3 categories as we’re just starting to learn. So, if you have more ideas-Comment Below!

DJI OSMO ACTION Overview and Full Review

The original OSMO launched in late 2015 and was DJI’s first move into ground based cameras with it being fitted with a version of the X3. Since then DJI have diversified the line with the OSMO Zoom as well as the Mobile versions for smartphones. In November 2018 DJI released the first major over hall of the line with the OSMO Pocket, this dramatically smaller version was entirely redesigned and improved in almost every way while still keeping the benefits of a stabilised gimbal camera system. Now DJI have released a new model to the OSMO lineup called the OSMO Action.

Spec of the OSMO Action

The OSMO Action has a very similar spec overall to the Hero 7 Black .

1/2.3” Sensor 12MP Stills 145 degree FOV F2.8 Lens
4K 60FPS 100 Mbps H.265 Video Recording
DJI RockSteady Electronic Image Stabilisation System
HDR Video 4K 30fps
240fps 1080P/720P Slow Motion.
Fully Waterproof Without External Housing
Front Colour Screen 1.4 inches, 300 ppi
Rear Colour 2.25 inches, 640×360, 325 ppi Touch Screen

Having a very similar form factor to a GoPro it is actually a little larger being 2mm longer and wider however what does stand out is the 1.4 Inch colour front screen, unlike other cameras that only have an information display to show recording info and status this is a full colour screen that’s able to show the live view just like the rear screen. This is a massive benefit for those who want to use this for blogging or need

Yep Les Amis,
Bon Vol ? Non ... Bon Vlog !
