Making my own wheels has been an interesting project. Using layers of balsa and basswood ply has been a challenge, but theirs texture looked like tread. The last part was building a "receptacle" into which they can fit inside the wings between #4 and #6 rib.

I've made my own plans on this. And except for pinching my thumb and later my palm with linesman's pliers working the 1/8" wire, it was relatively painless and full of good sanding effort.

The wheels were rattle can spray painted with Testor’s flat black and I used clear flat matte spray lacquer on the finished wheels for protection and durability. The hubs were dry brushed with Testor’s silver enamel. They were affixed with Gorilla Glue 5-min. Epoxy.

UPDATE: After building 3” diameter balsa wheels, I added rubber tread. I’m a cyclist and skidded to a stop at an intersection. It tore a hole in my rear tire. Hmm... I cut 3/8” strips from the tire that were 10” long and epoxied them in place. I had to repaint where I sanded and masked off the rubber before hitting it with a couple of coats of matte finish rattle can spray. The Apollo XI field has been around for about 60 years. New legislation signed by our president gives the FAA new power over RC flying they did not have before.

Affective May 24th 2019 the FAA suspended operations at the Apollo Field pending review of the local airspace and operating procedures.

Test Flight #3 - Ranger G2 with 8X4 Prop - Loops,Rolls, & Flaps Deployment ;-)

After performing the Motor Thrust Angle MOD on the Ranger G2 it gave me space for an 8x4 Prop.
I removed the stock 7x5 Prop to conduct some Test Flights with and 8x4 Prop.
This should produce significantly more thrust than the stock 7x5 Prop.
I have this plane trimmed out pretty well now ;-)
I have increase the Airleron from 100% Scale to 110% Scale to give a bit more Airleron authority.
I think I like that additional deflection on the Airlerons.
I also programmed some down Elevator with the Flaps to keep the plane from nosing up when Flaps are deployed.
Let's see if that helps.
So let's go do some Rolls, Loops, and Flap deployment ;-)

I tried to whole “let’s print an airplane “ thing again. This time it’s an ECLIPSON model T. I really had to add the nose ballast on this one. Flight weight is 930g, about 100g over ideal. I’m just hoping that the plane will hold up to the stress of flight. The quality on the parts I printed isn’t great.

This is how I add the external BEC to an OPTO (meaning there is no internal BEC) ESC.

Note that if the ESC has an internal BEC you will need to remove the red wire from the lead going to the RX, otherwise you will have two conflicting voltages and burn something up.

Yes , been raining for almost a week now ( most rain we have had in a long time ) ..
Came this morning , one WL Toys F-959 ...
Easy peasy / lemon squeezy ... Just plug in the wings and charge the battery ... Ok !

I also had to trim the rudder and elevator .. Alignment was ?
Other than that :
Engine / prop produce right on about 1:1 power to weight .. Noisy motor but no bad vibrations .
Flying weight is right on about 111 grams .

Factory transmitter blows chunks ! Ever seen a Cow blow chunks , the factory Tx blows chunks like that ..
Ele / Rud are seriously jerky
Motor = First 1/3 of throttle gives you nothing , then suddenly the power comes on .. And motor speed seems to be in 3 stages ( Feels like )
And the Rud / Ele feels the same , like 3 stages of control ( Not smooth at all )

Since the model uses the old Flysky protocol , I bound it to by Taranis Q x7 equipped with a multi protocol module ..

Chalk and Cheese folks ... Night and day , garbage and strawberries .
The difference is simply astounding .. Everything on the Qx7 is smooth ( Motor / Rud / Ele ) .

The battery goes right up the nose of the model , and there is plenty of movement / placement to play with the CG .

I will not fly the F959 with the factory Tx , it just blows .
I already set it up in the X7 .

Bad Weather , rain and more rain predicted + Winds ...
??? When I will get a chance to fly , F959 - Firstar - Ezio ...

After completing a full build article here I have been flying the Hobbymate Asteroid for a few weeks and have completed my review. This review is text/pictures and embedded DVR so it's much easier to scroll through than a video review (IMHO)

The full article above but here are my key findings:
  • This is a very premium kit for $140 and genuinely capable of 3-6s (you can choose 2700kv for 6s or 4300kv for 4s)
  • It is capable of 91mph+ on 3s or 106mph+ on 4s (GPS readings)
  • I feel the motor kV is a little too high for 4s but this can be resolved with a throttle limit
  • I was sceptical about using an EOS2 cam for FPV but the 4:3 ratio variant actually works well
  • Given the power of the motors and strength of the frame it is light at under 140g
