I discovered something the other day that is possibly dangerous, making my Supra not airworthy. This is assuming my facts are correct.. Since this will be a long post, here is the short version: If you are flying electric gliders, and you install the elevator servo in the fin, be aware the moment arm to the elevator control horn is so short, you will need to check that the torque provided by your servo is adequate. There is a simple calculation that allows you to determine how many Gs your elevator will support in the worst case.

Long version:

The last couple weeks, I've been pondering moving my servos from the tail into the fuse. At first, this was purely a measure to reduce tail weight, thereby reducing weight in the nose with a smaller power system. But there is another reason to put the servos in the fuse.... the moment arm with respect to the elevator control horn. The longer this throw is, the less torque is required to support the weight of the ship. This is analogous to trying to use a very short wrench to remove a bolt that was over tightened. The answer is found by using the longest wrench possible that exerts the least amount of force on the bolt.

So here are the facts, my elevator servo is glued into the fin. The distance from the servo's control arm to the elevator control horn is 5 inches. This means for a 78 ounce ship, the elevator will encounter a twisting force of 15.60 ounces / inch if the ship was suspended in air and not flying. But the elevator...Continue Reading

I discovered OuterZone.co.uk when I first returned to the hobby in 2012. OZ was still fairly new, and I ended up volunteering to help clean and or redraw some of the plans that had been submitted. Long story short, one of the plans that I redrew was "The Irresistible Plank", a large flying wing from the late 1970's (MAN Jan. 1979). I never built it........well until now.....I've been searching for something different to build, so I'm going to give this one a try. Other projects are on hold for now....The original aircraft had a 110" WS.....gonna scale it down to ~ 72", and make it a powered glider...stay tuned

Over the winter months and due to pandemic restrictions giving lots of pass time I decided to do up a an ARF. I already had the electronics from a deceased Extra. This would be my second attempt at adding weathering. Pics are at various stages. Pilot was repainted from the kit, paint chipping added, motor detail, weathering and a change to the canopy. F6Fs from this squadron did not have the rear window so it was filled in to make it correct. I used 3 Hellcat books for reference.

Back in 1957, Eddie Pope & Company sold a DYO-X1000 and DYO-X2000 aluminum flying wind model airplane. From poking around on the internet, it looks like this plane may be something of a collector's item. Eddie Pope was my dad, and I have one DYO-X1000 and two DYO-X2000s (the 2000 is larger) that I recently found in storage. I think they are all used, but in good condition (the DYO-1000 has a few minor dents, but I don't see any dents in the others - I have no idea about whether the motors work). I only have one box, and it's kind of beat up, but still shows all the relevant info. I have two sets of instructions, and one provided string.

I would like to sell these, but have no idea what they are worth (or, for that matter, how to sell them other than eBay). I did find one old (2015) add offering to sell one DYO-X1000 for $499, but the box was in better shape than mine.

Attached is a picture of one of the DYO-X2000s (in jpg).

Does anyone have any idea what these would be worth, or how if might find that out.

This is how the Costa Mesa Electric Flying Field looks like after one year of closure ...

The environmental activists running the CM Fairview Park commission managed to get the field closed, claiming it affected birds and wildlife.

Now the city of CM (113,159 people according to 2019 census) has no more opportunity for RC plane flying, or any other recreational activity - except bird and wildlife watching

The pictures below, taken last week on 7/12/2021 around noon, show how well used this resource has become ...

The complete closure - except the above listed activities - affects around 208 acres, the overall size of Fairview Park :

Zzzzzz can't believe I have posted here for such a long time. I have added to my Multiplex family recently with a modified Xeno and Twinjet. The Twinjet sounds neat being twin motors and still has some speed to turn heads. Not as fast as the Funjet or Microjet but still respectable and I have always wanted a twin project to do. I used 2 T F80 2200 Kv drone racing motors on 4s. I think this is 5s capable. The Xeno is the sedate one of the group with a Eflite 480 on 3s and folding prop. I couldn't find a power pod/motor for it so it was modified with a motor mount from Windrider RC. It's more of a climb and glide airplane but heavier than I would like as I had to add 2 1/2oz nose weight. More new stuff to come.

Here's a video of my 40cm (15.7") span living room flyer.
The auw is 4.6g with a 28mah lipo and a 4mm geared pager motor with 76mm prop. The plane is made from balsa and 1 micron Mylar.

It can fly for about 8 minutes and it's great fun to fly under tables and around chairs!

This version is stronger than it needs to be, so I'll try to make an even larger, yet lighter version.

Unleash Whoop FC to Airplane (0 min 18 sec)

  I tried to connect 2 servos to Whoop FC, Crazybee F3 FR, which I happened have as an FC
for UR65 Frsky Version. I know there are other newer and better Whoop FCs, but I used this
as I happened to have.

〇Where should I connect servos?
My version of Craybee F3 FR has pads for TX3, RX3 which I don't use. TX3 and RX3 are connected to
PB10 and PB11 of the MCU, respectively. To use servos, they have to be assigned to timer output
ports. Fortunately they can be assigned to TIM2_CH3(AF1) and TIM2_CH4(AF1). Problem was that
Motor3 and Motor4 which are conneted to PA3 and PA2 were also assigned to TIM2_CH4 and TIM2_CH3
in default. So I reassigned them to TIM15_CH2(AF9) and TIM15_CH1(AF9). If I were able to use cli timer
command, those setting would be:

resource servo 1 B10
resource servo 2 B11
timer A03 AF9
timer A02 AF9
timer B10 AF1
timer B11 AF1

But unfortunately Betaflight doesn't support timer command for old F3 target. So I modified target.c
and target.h in source code of Betaflight 3.5.1 to change those timer settings.

This evening, I did a peak amp draw using my Wattage Amp meter designed for this task. For the stock version of the Alpha 2M RTF sold by SoaringUSA, the peak amperage at max throttle was 12 amps with installed prop, spinner, and ESC powered by a Tattu 2s battery. Lots of good options for lightweight ESCs with onboard BEC. Later, I'll make this upgrade to get rid of that tail weight. This should allow me to push the CG even further back without adding any weight when the time comes. But for now, I have other RC stuff to work on. Also, the new 3mm x 3 set screw fits snug and tight. The motor sounds and feels healthy again.

The rubber band that came with the RTF model was replaced with "1 mm White Elastic Cord for Jewelry Making". Although the solution looks unsophisticated, (what, no electronic braking?), I am thinking about installing this on my Supra and setting the brake completely off. It might be easy to assume someone devised this because their ESC didn’t have a brake option for their folding prop. No, someone put on their thinking cap to save battery. The bigger the prop, the more power is needed to BRAKE and stop the prop from wind milling during non-powered gliding, In good thermal conditions, this could be a significantly long time! This process is powered by your battery. With such small batteries nowadays, conservation efforts go a long way. A simple elastic band, ingenious.

Today we have seen the release of firmware version V01.00.06.06 for the DJI FPV Air Unit, FPV Remote and the Air Unit Lite also known as the CaddX Vista.

This update has only one change listed that is
“Added support for new Air Unit (Lite) hardware”

While it is not known for sure at this time what this new HW is it’s strongly believed based on comments from CaddX in the past and the new Polar Starlight camera that this is going to be new Air Unit models with onboard camera encryption to prevent use of unlicensed 3rd party cameras such as the Runcam MIPI.

While it’s understandable DJI and CaddX would want to protect their licence agreement it’s disappointing that users will potentially be affected by this moving forward with new air units and possible issues with both 3rd party cameras as well as other lower official models previously sold and released.

What’s more concerning for users of the DJI Digital FPV System is that new features and bug fixes seem to have come to stop yet a new hardware revision and firmware can be developed to block competition in sort order.

While there have been a number major issues fixed with the V2 Goggles over the last month or so there remains a number of features missing and bugs in the system that have not been addressed....Continue Reading
