This was a second or third hand kit from I was led to believe it was a Yak. I think someone mixed up a couple of kits and I was left trying to figure out how and what it would end up as. The original canopy was a vacuum formed lexan from a Yak and the fuse was definitely that of a Mig 3. I used a block of EPP to fill in the empty place where a clear canopy should have been. The tail feathers were originally coroplast, much nicer in balsa!

Mar 31, at WPMPA using Flyzone Calypso motorglider with flaps for testbed. Hand tossed glide to adjust elevator clevis position. Full power climbout SAFE Off (B2) flew OK with no limits during looping and rolling and diving. Was able to control plane. Light 5 mph winds so AS3X gust mitigation could not be seen.
With SAFE On (B0) and full power and full up Calypso climbed at an 85 degree angle and wanted to roll to the left. After landing Dave adjusted the TX elevator angle and on 2nd test flight the adjustment worked perfect with a 80 degree pitch but without any roll. To test out position B1 intermediate I saw no limits for pitch or roll. With power off I pushed down elevator and she went into a vertical dive but I could not pull out with up elevator. It was as if the elevator was lost or locked out. At the crash sight we collected pieces and at the pit table both elevator and rudder servos worked fine in B0 and B2. We decided not to experiment with further B1 testing. The Calypso was CA glued and reshaped back together for further testing. The motor works but the spinner and SMART battery cant ge used due to impact damage. I ordered a 637T open stock to be programmed by Horizon for the Air Tractor program to test in a Test plane.
To be continued.

Really useful post on setting up Nano S2 with OpenTx Here

I'm using a Jumper 4in1 multiprotocol module so I needed to compile the module firmware with DSM_MAX_THROW enabled. Final eepe model file that seems to be working attached.

I was trying to save this video for Thursday, but I might as well post it now since my new APC 9x9E props arrived today and I'll be trying to get a video of my 4S Eflite Rare Bear with the APC 9x9E prop sometime this week. In the meantime...

The adventures of my $25 Eflite Rare Bear continue (this is the same display Eflite Rare Bear that I bought from my local hobby store for $25, several months ago from my buddy that manages the store. It was sadly just hanging upside down in the store collecting dust when I offered to buy it from him. Still fairly new, I decided to dust it off and go to work with it.

Aside from having all stock internals and 8x8 prop on 4S, I also added some features to make handlaunching a much easier task and to increase its durability:

1) Minwax Satin Finish Polycrylic-Coated Airframe (2 Coats) for paint protection.
2) Velcro Launch Grip with Dremeled Index Finger Notch for launch release stability.
3) Dubro Wing Tip Skids for Control Horn Skid Impact Protection.

An added effect of the Index Finger Notch was also a "low-hum resonating whistle" (similar to blowing air over a bottle) that can easily be heard during flight and in the video. I didn't expect this to happen... but pretty cool, nonetheless.

Here's a flight of me just jamming to the Eflite Rare Bear. Hope you enjoy the video!

Eflite Rare Bear 880mm BNF Basic w/AS3X (4S Stock Parameter) Performance Flight (4 min 18 sec)

Thanks Mike for catching this on your iPhone X!

Rainbow2 flying wing with a 7045 prop (9 min 44 sec)

Prop is now a 7045 which pulls 15A+ from the battery .
First launch was conservative on power and the Rainbow fell out of the sky .
2nd launch was with more power ! ( Enough power to feel the wing trying to pull out of my hand )

With more power the R2 launches cleanly . That's the secret to launching wings , pony up with the OJ .. ( juice )

I think the wing actually flies better with the 7045 prop than with the 5x3x3 .. Speaking of flying , throttle was around 1/4 to 1/3 .. Hard to tell when flying . Good news is that it flies slow and clean when dialled in . It even glides nicely when the power is cut .

Colour me impressed ! especially if your looking for a slow wing or a fun wing .
Rates are still 50% with 70% Expo and the wing is just so stable and predictable ..
I did move the battery forward which looks to have helped enormously ..
CG looks to be right on about 160mm for that flight . ( With just a little bit more up elevator trim than the previous flight )

A) Feed in power for the launch
B) Some up elevator trim - lots of wings like this
C) Watch that CG
D) Don't over control the wing ( Elevon throws )
E) Be happy , fly RC !

I should thank Banggood again for sending me the R2 , don't know why I havent flown it more ? Might have been the DLG bug . I was crazy for DLG there for a while , I still like DLG but the weather has blown chunks for like all of 2019 . Hopefully 2020 is more DLG friendly .

Hmmmmm , DLG ...................

So I just got a new drone (Armattan tadpole) with a FrSky R-XSR with it for my jumper t16 and I just got it to bind, but now I have the problem of it not doing any action even though everything is set up and it says that its bound. Ill try to arm it and it will do nothing and when I plug it into beta flight it shows that its not connected even though I will get warnings on my controller if I try to turn it off that (receiver is still connected) anyone know what to do

I Bought my Jumper T8SG plus back in May of 2018 to replace my original T8SG which had a broken gimbal at the time.
When it arrived I had already repaired my original radio and since I really didn't care for the color of ole "Colonial Mustard" it has pretty much stayed boxed up over the past years.
Recently i decided to pull it out and set it up. I liked it! Still not being a big fan of the odd color i decided to find for a way to change the look.
I discovered Jumper was selling faceplates in a few different colors. They had white, red, grey, and carbon fiber.
I think the yellow OLED screen kind of looks neat with the carbon. At least it's unique! 😎...Continue Reading

After beginning with RC airplanes in November, 2019, I built a F4U Corsair 550mm from a kit in February. I liked it so much I started looking for more war birds. I decided I liked the FMS 800mm war birds and at first wanted another Corsair, but then decided to get the P-51. Then after looking around, I saw that the FMS P51 was back ordered at most places. I found one, PNP, on Amazon for about the same price as most places, but it would come from China. Still, I was looking at May if I waited for them to be restocked in the states, so I ordered it. Ordered it on Monday, March 2 and received it on March 5. Turns out it shipped from Florida. Meanwhile, I had also ordered another kit, a P40 back around the end of February, that is mostly put together, but am still waiting on parts to complete it.

I decided I wanted to use my Devo 10 transmitter with the P51 so I ordered a Devo RX from MyRCMart on March 7. After a couple of weeks, it had still not shipped, and after a couple of inquiries, they refunded my money and said they could not ship it because of the pandemic. So I ordered a Futaba rx from Motion RC on March 16. An order from Motion RC on March 15 arrived on March 19, the March 16 order has still not arrived. Motion RC claimed their warehouse was backed up because of the pandemic. That March 16 order has what I needed to complete the P40 and get the P51 going. Finally I found a Walkera RX on Ebay, ordered it on March 23, and received it on March 27.

I...Continue Reading

Spektrum released a great new product in March 2020 - the AR637T receiver with AS3X and SAFE. It's the first receiver where Spektrum is supporting the notion of installing their SAFE technology in any plane you like. (It's been done withe the AR636 and even the Apprentice S receiver, but neither one of those solutions was officially supported.)

Below is my guide to the entire process of setting up an airplane to use an AR637T and SAFE. I approach the process as someone who is familiar with SAFE and wants to get SAFE working in the new airplane. Someone who is more familiar with AS3X may take a slightly different approach, but I think the end result is the same.

In a nusthell, here's the general approach. If you're used to using SAFE with an AR636 or an Apprentice S receiver, it's a rather different process, but I think this new way with the AR637T is a lot more intuitive.
1. Set up a model on your transmitter that can control the plane, and install the receiver. Initially, you don't worry about the fact that you're going to have SAFE or AS3X assistance from the receiver. Just make the transmitter control the plane correctly, including setting the correct wing/tail types, servo directions. and so on.
2. Once the transmitter has mastery of the flight controls, set up the receiver. There is no PC software needed - it's all done from the transmitter through a feature called "Forward Programming".
3. After everything is setup and tested, you can fly the plane,...Continue Reading
