Another flying season is upon us, and though my heli hanger is swelling with toys to play with I can't let go of this old bird. Once known as the Ark X400, rebranded by Helimax as the MX-400. My Mini-T is my 3D machine, my Trex 450 is my banger but the MX-400 fills the gap as the gentle mild mannered cruiser that makes the perfect heli to warm up with when your thumbs are rusty.

Current setup:
CC-35 with ParkBEC
GY240 Gyro
JGF 450TH motor
HS-55's on swash
HS-65 on tail
Spektrum AR6100 Rx

With the MS Hornet heli's going bye bye I required a new bird in the stable that I could backyard bash and still find parts for easily after I break it. My newest micro heli is a Ricco by LA Heli, the Ricco is an evolution of the popular Maxir model.

The build was fun and the heli flies like it's on rails with very good climb and long run times (12-15min on a 1350mah 3-cell).

I also published (if you could call it that) a Mini-Review in the Micro heli forums.

I have moved the old CP2 and MX-400 into moth balls for the moment, with the two builds over the winter (Mini-T and Hornet) and a 3rd planned soon (MaxIR) I figure might as well sharpen my focus. I also didn't help that Helimax discontinued the MX series so for now I'll just refer to it as a collectors item.

The flying crew for the summer includes 3 well equipped but always upgrading park size machines. Having a 6 month old at home cut my plans short for a Nitro build this summer so were going for the "fly when I can" park theme.

I took the hornet outside and put it on the end of my driveway and thought "there is no way that I'm going to see this thing well enough to fly worth a darn, it's to small !! " So I gave it a face lift, it doesn't look like much from 12inches away but from 20ft back I can see it much better now.

The gear is "in house" to finish the build now but this weekend was a wash as far as build time.

Final equipment List:

AXI 2208/20 25T pinion
Jeti Spin 11 ESC
Berg7P for Rx
Futaba GY240 paired with HS-50 for tail
Futaba S3114's for swash

85-100g 1000-1320mah Lipo

Projected AUW 360g

Been a while since I made a blog entry, figured I would post my two latest builds, the Thunder Tiger Mini-T or E325 which is finished now and a Hornet X3D micro. Two very different helis with two different roles, the Mini-T will serve as a good cruiser at the club field and the Hornet will provide me with some back yard flight that my larger helis can't deliver.

After a loose antenna wire shot down my Trex S I decided to give it a major overall. The plastic head was completely destroyed including the swash so I replaced the head with Aligns metal bits.

I also lost all three servos and the main shaft slammed into my ESC, as a result I rebuilt her with all new gear:

Current Setup:

Align Alum head
CC-BEC (10amp)
3EA HS-65's on Swash
HS-81 on Tail
Futaba GY240 with HS-81 for tail

I had a left over Align 430L (3550Kv) motor and an Align 35-amp ESC left over from my Trex build and in the other corner I had my trusty easystar 2yrs old and still flying with the stock brushed motor. Talk about a good idea , the plane is silly fast now, I can't even hold it at full throttle for fear that the wings are going to flap off. At any rate the plane is a blast now and I can rocket up to thermal alt in seconds now instead of minutes.

Expanding on my current collection I thought I would pickup a Trex , the kit was cheap for "whats in the box" which included motor, ESC, heli and a low grade lipo (I'll most likely use the Lipo in my planks. )

The build was pretty easy, the manual didn't offer much text but the drawings were good enough. I'm 10 flights in thus far and I really like the way the machine handles.

Current setup:

CC-35 with 5V ParkBEC
HS-65's on swash
HS-81 for tail
430L with 12T pinion
Berg 7P Rx

Idle 100-90-80-90-100
Idle Pitch -10<->+10

I have also included an eagletree reading of what the heli pulls, in this reading I did forward flight circuits at a pretty good speed and two full power punch outs (see the heli turn into a dot).

I usually don't post my vids to my blog but I thought this one was neat enough to post.

My old Formosa had seen better days, a few weeks ago I did a dumb thing and forgot to check the model type on my transmitter, what a dumb move. Needless to say the Mosa didn't fly well on my heli program. The old one had served me well for at least 2 years now so I figured it was time to build a new one.

Formosa Part 2:

E-flight park 450 swinging an APC 10X5
HS-55 for rudder and elevator
2 E-flight S75's for the ailerons
1350-1500mah 3-cell

Sloppy paint job by yours truly..

My wife was nice enough to get me an new toy an E-flight Jenny. I don't usually do the slow fly thing but this little plane is a blast to float around with. I'm managing a good 12-14 on a 2-cell 480mah pack.

I took a few pics of the little plane along with some comparo pics of my Brio and my cat (she has to jump in front of the camera, it never fails.. )

My collection of YouTube in flight videos using my stock Easystar running a brushed motor , 9.6V 2/3A IB-1200 packs. The camera I'm using is an Aiptek IS-DV2 it was a $100.00 Target store purchase. The orginal vids were taken in 640X480 but YouTube seems to downgrade the quality of the videos when you post them.

06-10-07: Just updating, I actually own a camera now that I can take some videos with, the first round of vids are ugly starter videos as myself and my friends get the hang of this whole shooting video thing.

I updated my MX-400 with the CCPM conversion, I also upgraded the washout and blade grips (the CCPM conversion came with a new swash).

Overall I am pleased with how the conversion went, I was thinking that this was going to be a mess of an upgrade but once you get going things move rather quickly. The frame is a lot cleaner now and with the top rails gone there is room for pretty much any battery one can think of now.

Specs of Final Setup:

Align 430L (3550Kv) with 11T pinion:
CC-35 amp ESC with ParkBEC (5-volt)
Berg 7P Horizontal
3ea HS-65HB servo's for swash
GY240 Gyro
HS-81 for tail servo
Polyquest 16C 2100mah 3-cell (8-10min flight time)

Trex tail rotor blades
Full CNC head (helimax)
CNC tail drive (helimax)
Trex flybar and pads

Post conversion flight notes:

The heli is much more crisp in it's control now and the cyclic response is great. The Trex tail rotor blades have also increased the tail authority by a large margin. Overall it's a lot more fun to fly , the only upgrades left I would like to do would be a GY401 or Logitech 2100 gyro to increase the tail hold.

Well the glitchy Electron-6 is gone, and I havn't posted an update of her in some time , there are a few more bling bits installed, tail servo swapped for an HS-81 , gyro moved, wire cleaned up.. Etc..

Thus for my new Berg 7P horizontal seems to be glitch free, a real test will be a range check at the field. I hope she will provide some care free flying on Sunday.

I finished my MX-400 rebuild , well it has been done but tonight I finished off the fine adjustments for the pitch curves and setup idle again after replacing my 400DH with an Align 430L. The new motor seems to have loads of power , I'm running it on a 11T powered by a polyquest 2100. The HS-55 can't seem to keep up to well in idle so I'm going replace it with an HS-65 or an HS-81. I have been lagging on getting this project finished since the temps have dropped and the winds have been rather harsh. I'm having a bad case of the winter blues, (I'm sure you guys are too) , all these toys and not much of chance to play..

Waiting to have some fun.

It's funny how we become addicted to trying this that and the other thing. Over the few years I have been into flying I seem to have started a moth collection of planes and helis, I figured I would post a few pics from projects past since the blogs were not around when I did my builds and who needs to see one more GWS build?

Since RCG gives us a blog I figure why not fill it up with my builds

For all the fuss I have had with Esky changing parts around this is one fun Heli. The build includes:

Esky upgraded swash and washout
CC-25 w/5V ParkBEC
HS-55's for swash
HS-50 for Tail
Futaba GY240 Gyro
JGF 400DH with 8T

The heli has a much better climb out then my Honeybee King ever did AUW of build came out to 498G. Sad to see Esky take the Honeybee Cool out of the lineup.
