Guys,

A nice Gent by the name Peter from Germany has been dealing with 3D Printing and produced a scale 9-cylinder Engine Bust model that actually allows the Stock E-Flite 15 motor to go through the cavity of the Engine.

Here's my comments about the preparation of the parts from the Frame Molds.

1. Instead of drilling and other tools per the instructions, I have used an angle hook Pick Tool that was very effective in the cleaning of the main Engine Housing.
2. The Cylinder Push Rods need careful handling so as not to lose any because one of mine was ejected and flew a few feet at a location that was easy to recover.
3. Otherwise the instructions are very very well written.
4. Instead of CA, I am using Gorilla "Clear" Glue and it has been with great results.

SUMMARY:

The Pick Tool did a super and fast, effective job in cleaning up the inside of the main Engine housing.
This is by far the best Engine Model that I have ever come across and the quality is very good for 3D printer.

EDIT:

I am having great results in using the Gorilla "CLEAR" Glue!

Does NOT leave any residue, pretty much fast cure (comparatively to others) and it is CLEAR and does not look like there is any glue what-so-ever.

The warning label says to watch out for fumes but, I don't smell...Continue Reading

Almost forgot I finished this while getting the Raven together.

I was off work for a week with a cold, so I decided to get this electric Little Toni from the Wings Maker going. Tossed the stock motor and put in a Leopard 2835 1350kV on 3 cells.

The wing was terribly warped, but I took my heat gun to the field and got it all trimmed out. Maiden flight was 1/20/19 or thereabouts.

Hmmmm , remember that cute little motor ?

Yeah , I cooked it and now it's damaged ...

0802 16,000kv

4 x 16,000 = 64,000 rpm
8 x 16,000 = 128,000 rpm

I expected this might happen ..

The smallest prop I had , was still too much ..

I had to run it 2s , well it's advertised as being 2s capable ..

But that 16,000kv is just ridiculous ..

So ...... 2s .... resulted in some 41 grams of thrust at 39,000 rpm and the current peaked around 5.6A ...
Now the motor only got warm , I did not run it long enough to cook .. ( So I thought )
But obviously the motor got damaged doing a full throttle run ( 2s )

So is it really 2s capable ?????
I guess that was like lighting up a few cigarettes , the motor went up in smoke ( actually there was no smoke ) ..

What a anticlimax that was ...

Next motor test will be a racerstar 1306 4000kv ..
Supposedly 1 to 2s ...

Hmmm , how will it run 1s ????

This is a place to post a few photos for someone since you can't add them to PM's.

I have a few. This one that has been scavenged for parts. It has minor damage on the vertical. The nose and canopy are in good shape but the magnets to hold the canopy are missing from the fuse side. Don't remember story on that. I have another 2 that have flown and one NIB.

If I sent you this fuselage, I would carefully remove the Horiz for shipping. I think I can get it off without damaging it.

What is cooking a motor ?

In a nut shell , it is when the motor gets so hot that electric current goes to generating heat rather than forward thrust .
This may or may not , result in thermal run away !

When electricity goes to generating heat , it means power is taken away from thrust resulting in diminishing returns .
This may be hard to notice in a quad or plane until the motor dies ..
But on my test stand it is noticeable almost right away as I can monitor RPM / Thrust / current ...

Thermal Run away ! ( A really good way to kill a motor )

Again , electric current goes toward making heat rather than thrust .. In a thermal run away situation , the motor begins to slow down ( lose power ) and just get hotter and hotter till the motor seizes ( stops ) or dies ( damaged ) . On the test stand I can pick up on this almost immediately ..

As I slowly increase power , RPM / thrust and current climb . Once a peak is reached only current might go up , that extra power being fed into the motor ( if it takes more power ) is most likely going into manufacturing heat .. And as the motor gets hotter it begins to slow down ...
The faster this occurs ( seconds ) , the more likely that the motor may go into thermal overload .

It would be very difficult to pick up on this without the ability to monitor the motor properly ..
A way to avoid such would be to match your motor ( KV ) to the battery ( voltage ) and prop you want to run .

Here is an old article concerning wing to tail incidence as well as biplane wing alignment. It is done in Q&A format.

Q: What is incidence?
A: Incidence usually refers to the angle of attack of the wing when compared to the horizontal stabilizer. For an airplane to be stable in pitch, the wing should have a small angle compared to the tail. The angle is called positive when the leading edge of the wing is higher than the trailing edge. The angle is negative when the leading edge is lower than the trailing edge. For aerobatics, the incidence angle is usually zero: the wing and tail are at the same angle of attack.

Q: What incidence angles should be used on a biplane?
A: Model biplanes are usually designed with incorrect incidence angles. It is typical for a model biplane, such as the Sterling Stearman kit, to have slight negative incidence in the forward (top) wing and quite a lot of positive incidence in the rearward (bottom) wing. The wings are not parallel to each other.

This causes extreme flight problems. When the rearward wing is at a higher angle of attack than the forward wing, the rearward wing will stall first. When the rear wing stalls, the airplane will pitch up rapidly and try to enter a spin. This was demonstrated recently at our field on the test flight of a new biplane. Also, at high speeds the wings fight each other and the plane tends to suddenly pitch up and down.

The correct incidence for a scale biplane is to have a slight positive angle of attack in the forward (top) wing compared to the bottom wing. This way the forward wing will stall first and the nose will drop to recover – the airplane will be stable.

For an aerobatic biplane, the wings should be set at zero incidence so everything stalls at the same time.

The center gear box will feature a quick release for the motor pinion, no screws which may come lose are required.

Currently the front, center and rear gear boxes are not fully assembled yet, because we're still waiting for a few parts to arrive. Some parts for the differential locking mechanism have to be CNC machined, a square hole requires wire cutting for a precise result, some other parts are still in the plating process. The manufacturing takes a lot of different steps, so please be patient and bear with us.
