I got started in RC by flying gliders off the slopes along the Southern California coast. A Mark's Models Wanderer was a great trainer and provided hours of fun. I soon advanced to more aerobatic gliders like the Ridge Rat and Divine Wind.

When I turned inland to hunt thermals with an MFA 2m High Sierra I was quickly disappointed. It was a lot of work setting up a bungee high start for a very short glide back. Thermals seemed out of reach every time, even after studying what to look for in the sky and on the ground. I put the High Sierra away and took it out only once, years later, for a single demo flight on a very windy day.

After nearly thirty years sitting in my basement I took it out for another spin recently. (See pics). A new guy had moved into town and joined the club. Mark has over thirty years of experience in soaring and can ride a thermal out of sight with anything from a large open 4m ship down to a small 1.5m DLG.

He lent me his copy of Dave Thornburg's Soaring Book and shared many great tips for finding and riding thermals. After all of that I wish I could say I had success with the High Sierra. It just wasn't happening. That glider is a lead sled and just wants to get home as fast as possible.

The sensors being analog, it had to be cleaned. The mane challenge will be managing the heat from the H bridges. They'll get heat sinks, but there's no temperature sensor. The datasheet says they shut down at 160C, but that's hot enough to boil PLA. At the rate of progress, there won't be a truck by XMas. Designing & printing the container alone will take 1 week.

After an unfortunate Aileron control failure, my A1 Skyraider landed in the rough outfield and snapped its wing near the root.

On assessment of the damage, I have decided to repair it rather than build a new wing as it will be quicker and reasonably cost effective.

C-182 Sky Trainer

I am a fan of Dynam planes, and a few weeks ago I was looking at the planes available at Bitgo Hobby when I came across the Dynam Sky Trainer C182. Cessnas have always been one of my favorite small civilian planes, a fiend and I took a memorable trip in a C152 many years ago, and I have a photo somewhere with him and that plane parked in my yard many years ago. I have a few warbirds and other planes I try to fly, but the only plane I have that I have successfully taken off and landed on wheels is the Aeroscout. It is also the only plane I have not crashed and broken and my largest at 1100 mm. I do have some successful flights with my two 800mm P51s, but they do not work well with wheels on my available landing strip. I have a paved road but it is crowned and not very level, and I do not have very good unpaved ground or grass to fly from. Lots of open airspace though.

I like Dynam products because my experience with them has been good and the prices are reasonable. The PNP C-182 is normally $159 but was on sale for $149. The PNP Aeroscout is $150 without flaps or LEDs. It is 1280mm(50.4in) so is about 7 inches larger than my Aeroscout. It is a high wing trainer type plane and I know I need more training in something that should be easier to fly. I have read that larger planes are easier to learn with. I have always liked the looks and flying characteristics of the Zero, especially the A6M2.
In 1988 I built the Top Flite Golden Edition Zero. The 1st Golden Edition was composed of various scale models including: F4U Corsair, P40, P51 Mustang both D and razor back, P47, A6M2 Zero, P38 and some I do not recall. I still have the model and still flies with the original engine and radio. At least one flying day I take it to our club and fly it. Only the batteries have been upgraded to LIFE 2S 2Kmah.
The Zero was my 3rd RC model ever. I decided to build mine using Saburo Sakai’s model as pattern. It is a 60” wings span model. The Top Flite Zero, is a fully planked model, both wing and fuselage and with very little area inside the model for equipment. Been my 3rd building experience and the 2nd scale model, the first was a Piper Cub clipped wing, I went slow in the construction learning a lot in the process. I decided to construct the Navy version so gray it was.
The model is powered by an OS 90 glow engine with a Pitt’s special muffler turning a 15 X 8 prop. I used an all metal, one piece engine mount to mount the engine made by Sullivan, I think. The model was design for a 60, but I needed weight to balance the short nose fighter and obtain the CG. I also built an air dam for cooling and mounted on it a radial engine mockup. All this nose weight was welcomed. Better than dead lead.

Only 3 weeks after 1 of the mane 3" cables broke, the platform finally came down. It grazed the center of the dish & came to rest on the side. The gregorian dome, azimuth arm, & triangle are clearly visible. Barely visible in the lone low resolution photograph, the tops of the support towers also collapsed as expected. The backstay cables, relieved of tension, pulled the tops back. They were not looped over the towers like a bridge but fastened to the towers.

Lions were intrigued by how it could have been so marginally constructed, while suspension bridges have lasted forever. Obviously, there wasn't enough time for robots to do any good. Insiders saw that 1 strand was breaking every day in the last week.

Now, the process of recycling the metals can restore it to an empty field. The arecibo message transmitted in 1974 contained a graphic of the dish. The aliens who receive the message will come back to find only an empty field where it originated from.

Hi All,

This maybe a long a shot...

My little boy broke the antenna off my Spektrum DX6i. I can't find a replacement antenna anywhere. Can anyone suggest where I could find one please? I don't want to upgrade my radio, as I'm a casual flyer.

For a long time, I had been flying my Blade 150S every morning before work, and quite a lot of crash damage had built up. Eventually, I drove the heli into the grass tail first, which snapped the tail fin and chewed up the tail rotor. Surprisingly, the 150S was still flyable though it was no fun to do so. Meanwhile, my backup 150S had at least a bent feathering shaft, maybe more. So, yeah, it was time for some repairs!

After having gone through quite a few stock tail fins and tail rotors, and a pile of stock shafts, I decided to give a Microheli tail unit a try. I also threw a hardened steel feathering shaft into my backup 150S. I have some titanium main shafts ready to go, but I was surprised to find neither of my main shafts were bent ... this time. In the following video, I maiden these parts and briefly discuss my impressions. These parts are available through Microheli and NextRC at the links below.

In this video I took my HBX Hailstorm (18858) out to the park for a speed run and some bashing! The HBX rc cars are amazingly strong and I really like them!
The top speed was a bit disappointing in comparison to my speed run last year!

Hi! I am TOTALY NEW to RC and Electronics AND BLOGGING!!!
I am disabled and can't mow grass any longer and have seen Radio Controlled Mowers, but cannot figure out how to build one because I know Nothing about electronics!
I am looking for a parts list and how to wire it together to make the lawnmower work with me setting using the RC.
I am Mechanically Inclined, so I can put the parts together, just not electronic savvy!
If anyone can give parts list and how to wire, I would be very appreciative!

Instructor over ride instructions

From page 227 of iX12 manual but applies to any talking DX transmitter.

Tips: fly the model with the student’s transmitter first. Trim her out so the first flight can be easy with hands off whether it be SAFE On or Off. Land and export the student’s settings on to an SD card so that the Instructor transmitter has the same settings. Import the settings into the Instructor transmitter. Insert an IP after the model name (to designate which is master) and proceed to System Setup.....Trainer..... and Wireless Trainer. Push on the Inhibit box so that it flashes and roll once to the right. You will see the box “Programmable Master” flashing. Press once to stop the flashing and scroll down to the box labeled Switch I. Now switch I is the old fashion 1980 method. Your finger will get tired of pushing the button all the time and a dent will be put into your finger pad. Use the technology! Press on the I switch box so it blinks and toggle a switch. I use the A switch because it is a two position switch that is easy to locate (at the top left corner). The audio will be set up automatically “Instructor has control” or “Student has control”. However if you use a 3 position switch (position C2 for example) you will not hear anything. You can leave this as mystery to figure out inflight or spend about 5 minutes going into the Digital Switch menu to change the numbers and then going into Custom Voice Events and finding the phrase in...Continue Reading
